Healing your relationship with food may well bring healing to other parts of your life too. What would it feel like if you could spend more time in your life focused on things that are at the center of your value system, rather than spending so much time consumed by thoughts about food and body? #relationshipwithfood #healing #eatingdisorderawareness ... #edrecoverywarrior #createspace #eatingdisorderrecovery #sundaymotivation #nondiet #nondietapproach #eatingdisordersupport #yycdietitian #yycwellness #calgaryalberta #foodpeace #eatingdisorderhope #nondietdietitian #dietitiansofig #hope See more

Here are a few meaningful statistics about men with eating disorders... 25-40% of all individuals with eating disorders are male. Of men with eating disorders, 42% identify as gay. 67% of individuals with ARFID (avoidant restrictive food intake disorder) are male. We know that men struggle with food and body relationship too. We also know that for men, seeking support and treatment is often very difficult because of the sterotype/belief that an eating disorder is something t...hat only women struggle with. I'm imagining how isolating this must feel. I'm imagining many men struggle deeply for years without any support. I'm imagining many want to reach out for help, but are afraid of what others will think of them if they do. As a woman, I can't claim to understand what men with eating disorders experience, but I do hold compassion for their experience. If you are a male who is struggling in relationship to food and body, I think one offering that may provide comfort is to know that you are not alone in this. Other men are struggling too. You deserve care and treatment. You don't have to do this on your own. Seeking care does not make you "weak". Seeking care (when you are ready/and in a way that feels best to you) is actually really brave. #itsnotweaktospeak #menandeatingdisorders #eatingdisorderawareness #eatingdisordersupport #foodandbodyrelationship #menshealth #yycnow #yyclife #eatingdisorderrecovery #edrecoverywarrior #yycdietitian #support #yourstorymatters #eatingdisorders #eatingdisordertreatment

I want to start by saying that I am learning and unlearning- and that I still have so very much to learn. As a provider working with individuals affected by eating disorders, I feel I cannot exist in this space without acknowleding the systems of oppression that exist, and the harm that comes to so many marginilized individuals. I have been afraid to use my voice at all in relation to this topic, because I feel as though I still have an enormous amount of learning to do. I f...eel unequipped to address this topic to some extent... but I also recognize that silence is no longer an option because silence also does harm. Access to eating disorder care is NOT equal or grounded in justice. There are many barriers to accessing care that exist and too many for me to name here. So much suffering exists and we are not all treated equally when it comes to accessing eating disorder care. Strutural barriers exist. Racism exists. Sterotypes exists. Sexism exists. Homophobia exists. Stigmatization exists. Genderphobia exists. Transphobia exists. We know that eating disorders can be coping mechanisms for pregidous, misgendering, family discrimination, and internalized stigmatization. Access to care needs to improve immensely because ANYONE struggling with an eating disorder deserves care that is supportive for them. I have so much to learn, and so much personal work to do in this area that it feels overwhelming, and I am sure that I have not covered everything here, but I have to start where I am while remaining curious and open to learning more. #socialjustice #eatingdisordercare #eatingdisordertreatment #inequalities #eatingdisordersupport #yourstorymatters #barrierstotreatment #learning #somuchtolearn #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisorderawareness

OSFED is included as an eating disorder classification in the DSM-5 and was previously known EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specifiied) and includes the following: "atypical" anorexia, bulumia and binge eating disorder; purging disorder, night eating syndrome, chewing & spitting, not fat phobic anorexia and orthorexia (not yet included in the DSM-5, but proposed as a diagnoses). Interesting stats about OSFED: *The lifetime prevalence of any DSM-5 eating disorder is 2.2...% in males and 8.4% in females, with the most common diagnoses being OSFED (7.4%). *3.6% of women age 40-50 years old have a diagnoses of an eating disorder, with OSFED being the most common diagnoses within this age group. Sadly, for some individuals with a feeding or eating disorder that falls under the classification of "OSFED" , it may take longer for their eating disorder to be recognized or diagnosed- despite the significant struggle that individual is experiencing. This can also be true of any eating disorder diagnoses or classification. The individual may appear "healthy" on the outside, however may be very ill & may feel unheard or unsupported in seeking treatment. Health care providers...if someone voices that they are struggling in relationship to food and body, please believe them and validate their experience. Do not dismiss them because their weight is "normal" ("normal" is a word we need to stop using to describe weight, "normal" is different for every body, and we cannot assume that a "normal weight" means that the person is not suffering). Provide a safe place for the individual to share what their experience is like for them. Please do not invalidate their experience. Help the individual to seek the support that they need and deserve to heal. Your story matters. Your experience is valid. You deserve to be heard and acknowledged. You are deserving of support and treatment. #eatingdisorderawareness #osfed #osfedrecovery #edrecoverywarrior #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisordersupport #yourstorymatters #yourexperiencematters #youdeservesupport #eatingdisordersurvivor #osfedawareness #nondietdietitian #yycdietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #haes
