In a bad season, an old man's thoughts turn to despair, or to parody. Take your pick . . .
Two public meetings were held this week, in Geraldton and Longlac. The issue was the proposed Energy East pipeline. Here is my take on the Geraldton meeting, Tuesday, January 24 >
It may happen to you someday, and this may help prepare you. I wrote this because that's how I engage with the world . . . I write. And part of the reason I write is to make sense of my experience, to reflect on my experience, and if possible, to find the humour in it. Your job as a reader is to extract what benefits you can, and to pass judgement on my writing. Start now . . . http://bit.ly/2hhyGOs

I placed an order today for copies of my latest book. It is a facsimile edition of my DVD publication in 2009 called "Muskeg Tours 2009: Explorations in the Beardmore-Geraldton Gold Camp." The DVD proved very popular at the Toronto Mining Conference. When I recently dipped into this early version of an eBook, I concluded that the images and material deserve a wider distribution. Nobody covered the 2007-08 boom in mineral exploration the way I did. And I delved into this region's mining history back into the '30s. I will be offering the book for sale at various craft sales in TBay this fall, & at the Geraldton Craft Fair on Sunday, November 20.
Yesterday, Olga was distracted from her gardening upon hearing a snarl. Our house cat, Trouble, was defending her territory. We rescued Trouble from a private sanctuary where the hosts were occasionally feeding a horde of feral cats. Most of their food came from their own efforts in the nearby bush. Trouble was so named because she was always devising ways to sneak into the house. She was a tiny thing then, and she hasn't changed. But she is a ferocious hunter. She trac...ks down mice in our house, and outside, she devastates the wildlife population. She has even brought back young rabbits her own size. Yesterday, on our front stoop, Olga had placed an offering of household scraps for birds and chipmunks. Trouble was snarling because she was confronting a Canadian lynx. Her hackles were raised, and the creature was backing down from Olga's wildlife dining table. The lynx turned tail and bounded off, with Trouble at its heels. They both disappeared into the bush. When Olga called for me to come look, I thought to myself, Okay, Trouble may have met her match. We might not see her again. A couple of hours later, Trouble reappeared. She lay down beside the dishes of scraps. She looked awfully pleased with herself.
Happenin' now . . .
