Alberta’s government is turning its focus to specific technical rules and requirements in the OHS Code. Minister of Labour and Immigration Jason Copping encoura...ges Albertans to provide their input through an online survey. The survey opens March 30 and closes on May 10. https://www.alberta.ca/ohs-code-review-2020-23.aspx The OHS Code has not been extensively updated since 2009 and changes are long overdue. Health and safety rules need to keep pace with changes to workplaces, standards, best practices and technological advances. They also need to be streamlined and simplified. Together, a revised OHS Act and updated OHS Code will help workers and job creators achieve better health and safety results. Workplace health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. The human and financial cost of workplace injuries and illnesses is too high. By updating OHS Code rules and making them easier to understand and follow, we can reduce those costs and ensure that every Albertan makes it home safely from work each day. See more

My goodness, things have changed in the last 70 years in the dental industry! And the scope of practice for our profession in Alberta has grown tremendously si...nce that time. RDAs are not just "comforters" and "helpers" anymore! The AADA has a short window of time to address changes to the Dental Assistant Regulations to present to the government. We need Alberta RDAs to weigh in with feedback on issues that the AADA should address with government to help move our profession into the future. AADA Group Page members will have the opportunity to provide their opinions through a series of polls beginning today. If you are a current RDA in our province be sure you have clicked on the group page link under the cover picture on this FB page, answer the 3 questions, agree to the policy for participation and get your opinions counted! The first poll is with regard to professional title. We look forward to hearing from you! See more

WHY YOU NEED TO JOIN YOUR ASSOCIATION's TODAY! Professional associations in dental assisting are critical for generating the energy, flow of ideas, and proactiv...e work needed to maintain a healthy profession that advocates for the needs of its professionals. These organizations serve as the collective voice of our profession and perform that function that individuals in their separate capacity are unable to perform with credibility. When greater numbers unite in one voice, stronger and more powerful arguments can be advanced to achieve advocacy outcomes. Kudos to the professional registered dental assistants who are engaged, involved, and contributing members of our associations -- these RDAs are advocating for and advancing the profession of dental assisting and the oral healthcare we offer to our patients. The goal of advocacy efforts by professional associations is to educate all professional Dental Assistants, and the public about the importance of broad-base membership, creative ideas, esprit de corps, and energetic participation in helping the profession improve and move to higher levels. In prior eras, visionary dental nurses realized the need for associations in order to meet the changes occurring in the social, cultural, and economic sectors of their world. Elected association leaders today remain responsive to their members and incorporate members' input by devising new mechanisms to advance oral healthcare through the dental assisting profession, thus allowing members to contribute to the accountability and voice of the profession to society. The tri-level association year begins December 1st. To ensure that you don't miss out on a full year of services, supports, benefits, professional development, discounts and more....renew or join today! Membership information and forms/applications are available at www.edaa.ab.ca and at www.calgaryrda.ca We look forward to your participation in the business of our profession!

November 20, 2020 Antimicrobial resistance as dangerous as pandemic: WHO AFP CTV News GENEVA, SWITZERLAND -- The World Health Organization warned Friday that ...growing antimicrobial resistance was every bit as dangerous as the coronavirus pandemic -- and threatened to reverse a century of medical progress. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the issue "one of the greatest health threats of our time". Antibiotic resistance happens when bugs become immune to existing drugs, rendering minor injuries and common infections potentially deadly. Resistance has grown in recent years due to overuse in humans, but also in farm animals. "Antimicrobial resistance may not seem as urgent as a pandemic but it is just as dangerous," Tedros told a virtual press conference. "It threatens to unwind a century of medical progress and leave us defenceless against infections that today can be treated easily," he said. The WHO said antimicrobial resistance was endangering food security, economic development and the planet's ability to fight diseases. Resistance has led to increased health care costs, hospital admissions, treatment failures, severe illnesses and deaths, the UN health agency said. The WHO joined forces with the Food and Agriculture Organization and with the World Organisation for Animal Health to launch a new group to advocate for urgent action to combat the threat. The One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance will bring together heads of government, company chief executives and civil society leaders. The group is co-chaired by Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and Mia Mottley of Barbados. The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations said superbugs that are resistant to existing antibiotics were already taking an heavy toll. "About 700,000 people globally die each year due to antimicrobial resistance. Without strong action to ensure appropriate use of existing antibiotics, as well as new and better treatments, that figure could rise to 10 million by 2050," the IFPMA said in a statement welcoming the new group. https://www.ctvnews.ca//antimicrobial-resistance-as-danger

Professional association members ROCK! They are passionate about supporting their profession and initiatives that will benefit RDAs. They support those less fortunate in our community by contributing their time, talents and treasures to projects that improve the oral health of Albertans.... As a group, they support charities that help Albertans live healthier, happier lives. This conveys our profession as one that cares about others in our community who need assistance. They understand the importance and value of personal connections with a large group of professionals in the dental industry. They know that the EDAA provides professional development focused on the role of the RDA. They are willing to work together as a group to move our profession forward and to advocate for our profession with government and other health organizations. Summary of NEWS ALERT: Alberta RDAs withdrew support for their only advocates! To read the full article click on this link /https://advocacyaada.files.wordpress.com//news-alert-alber... Many RDAs believe incorrectly that the College of Alberta Dental Assistants exists to serve and support them. The CADA has repeatedly affirmed that their role is public protection not protection for our profession or advocacy for the RDA. Service, support and advocacy for RDAs is the role of professional associations that we are now at risk of losing. How has this withdrawal affected advocacy and the future of our profession? It is hard to understand why RDAs have chosen to give away their opportunity for regional groups that provided a point of contact and have contributed so much to the 75 year history of advancement for dental assisting. Over the past 100 years we went from being ladies in attendance to a becoming a self-regulating, licensed and recognized profession in Alberta. The problem is that without the full support of RDAs in our province our profession is at high risk of losing our ability to advocate for and serve individual dental assistants and our profession as a whole. We are going to lose the opportunity to represent RDAs at the table with government and with employers if Alberta RDAs continue to withhold support for their only advocates. What needs to happen now? We need you to choose to support and participate in the tri-level professional associations. Dont lose your only advocates! There is no other way to maintain our credibility as oral health professionals, no other way to advance our profession and no other way to have a voice that will be heard by decision makers. You have a choice to make. Tomorrow may be too late. Tomorrow we could lose it all. 75 years of devotion to our professional future could be lost to indifference, apathy or simple neglect. Your Call to Action: Take these 4 steps 1. Claim your right to be a respected oral health team professional and your right to be heard. 2. Share this important message with your colleagues and talk about the urgency of supporting our professional associations. 3. Encourage your employer to support your professional association memberships because it will bring added value to your practice. 4. Invest in your professional future now. Contact the AADA today and become a tri-level supporting member! [email protected] 780-987-2022 Thank you for choosing to support our profession, our future and to protect our collective voice!

Important message to oral health providers from our national association: To address the gap in available PPE, the Government of Canadas Essential Services Con...tingency Reserve (ESCR) has been established. The ESCR premits eligible essential service business or organizations to apply to receive personal protective equipment (PPE), non-medical masks and disinfection products to address urgent, short-term (45 days) needs. The Contingency Reserve complements existing PPE support being provided to frontline health care workers by the Public Health Agency of Canada. It helps other essential service organizations bridge critical, temporary gaps in their supplies to avoid any significant disruptions in services to Canadians. Supplies are provided on a cost-recovery basis to businesses or organizations that cannot access supplies through other means and when significant service disruptions are imminent. Learn about the contingency reserve, find eligibility requirements and access the application form at https://www.canada.ca//public-services-/services/escr.html See more

Some employers are complaining that they cannot find or keep staff. Do those employers critically evaluate the reason they are having this problem? There are several areas to look at during this evaluation that could be contributing factors. (see photo) It is also important to realize that staff don't quit jobs, they quit employers. Until an employer addresses the real reasons for high turnover in their practice the pattern is likely to continue. Respect for the contributions of all oral healthcare team members costs nothing but is one of the most highly valued factors in the workplace. Employers who show that respect in regular and specific ways to individual team members will reap the benefits to their practice, their team and their patients!
