ENC Virtual Bird Study this Thursday! Owls of Alberta: An Exploration Presented by Sara Pearce Meijerink, Head Biologist, ... and Dr. Geoff Holroyd, Chair, of Beaverhill Bird Observatory Eleven species of owls occur regularly in Alberta. In this presentation, Sara Pearce Meijerink, Head Biologist at BBO, will talk about the variety of species, their ecology and habitats. Dr. Geoff Holroyd, BBO Chair, will present the highlights of 20+ years of satellite telemetry on three species of owls, describing their movements within and beyond Alberta’s borders. BBO has been banding Northern Saw-whet Owls for almost 20 years and has many band recoveries that demonstrate the varied migrations of this species. This talk will go from general information to detailed life history of Alberta’s owls. Geoff will add a few notes about other BBO-supported studies of Burrowing Owls in Mexico, Little Owls in Spain and Black-banded/Black-and-white Owls in Ecuador. ENC Virtual Speaker Program The Birds of Christmas Presented by Dick Cannings... Online Zoom Presentation Friday, December 18 at 7:00 Everyone welcome and ENC members will be available to assist those new to Zoom. To many birders, the Christmas Bird Count is a part of the Christmas season as important as turkey and cranberry sauce. Started in 1900, it is the longest running citizen science project in the world and has amassed a large and valuable dataset that documents the ranges and numbers of birds across North America. In this presentation I’ll talk about how its contributions fit in with other, more recent, monitoring programs such as the Breeding Bird Survey, migration monitoring networks, and eBird. COVID-19 Response Changes and Cancellations Dear club members,... In accordance with the provincial government’s increased vigilance around COVID-19, and in recognition that the current outbreak has proven to put people over 65, those with compromised immune systems, and people with chronic respiratory issues at greater risk than the general population, The Edmonton Nature Club is making changes to our schedule of events and activities. Speaker Series and all Study Groups: cancelled until further notice. Banquet: will be rescheduled to the fall. Ticket holders will be contacted. Field Trips: cancelled due to close contact in car-pooling. Town of Tofield’s Snow Goose Festival: cancelled for 2020 Nature Walks: for now, nature walks will continue when we have volunteers to lead, however, we are requesting that anyone who is feeling unwell or who has recently travelled outside of Canada refrain from attending.
