Let’s Talk About Stitches, 2021 By Janelle B Acrylic paint, acrylic thread, cotton floss and quilt cotton material... This piece’s stitches were meant to create a serene landscape highlighting depth and texture using machine embroidery. A combination of problems (including a sewing machine breakdown) leads to more hand embroidery and a striking hand-painted stone fence. The tree is blended embroidery threads wrapped in straight stitches plus leaves made from quilting material. The foreground, at this point, lacked interest. An attempt to add a set of tire tracks detracted from the overall appearance. Removing those stitches left a patchy surface made for an old abandoned road that fit with the aging fence. The memory of a Red-Winged blackbird’s song generated a slough side retreat for just such a feathered family. Comprising males and mama joining in the conversation from her nest. She is sitting on the water’s edge. The spattering of red and yellow amid the lime green shrubbery, using a double feather stitch version covered in more quilting material, adds a touch of energy and character. When it comes to the Language of Stitches, it seems there is a lesson here about how they can move problems to pictures.

COMING SOON! Alberta Quiltmakers and Their Quilts, a new book that will surely be of interest to you. The Friends of the Royal Alberta Museum Society (FRAMS), ...who supports the Royal Alberta Museum in a variety of ways, is excited to announce my forthcoming book. At 175 pages, and fully illustrated in colour throughout, the reader discovers Alberta’s history one quilt at a time as captured by the stories of the quiltmakers and their quilts held in public and private collections. I spent many years, as time permitted, researching and documenting quilts throughout Alberta. Building on two other quilt documentation projects (Alberta Heritage Quilt Project & Alberta Quilt Study Society), I am proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to the history of Alberta Quiltmakers, past and present. At last, Alberta quiltmakers have their place in history and hopefully on your bookshelf. For those wanting to secure a copy of this new publication, please sign up now by visiting the FRAMS website book launch page https://frams.ca/book-launch/ . When you sign up you will automatically receive notification when the book is available to pre-order.

It was 10 years to this day that Alexander McCall Smith walked into The Dovecot in Edinburgh and saw the The Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry. Thanks to Ann Dicks...on and Elizabeth Neilson spoke to him first, they introduced me. That weekend he then had the idea of doing the Great Tapestry of Scotland. And a photo of my son Prentice looking at the tapestry panel Carmel stitched. See more
