Did You Know: Sixties Scoop refers to the Canadian Government's practice of taking Indigenous children from their parents and communities and either placed in f...oster homes, adopted outright or taken out of the country, without consent from the parents or Band Leaders. It has been estimated that between 1960 and 1990 approximately 20 000 children were taken from their homes. We can see the lasting effects of these practices in our current system today because Indigenous children are over-represented in the Child Welfare System. In Alberta, 61% children in protective care are Indigenous. Source: https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca//arti/sixties-scoop See more

Did You Know - In 1944 the Canadian government started Project Surname, which implemented a system of "disc numbers" for Inuit people, under the guise of census... collection. The discs were similar to dog-tags and were worn on the wrist or neck as identification. Each disc had a set of numbers and a letter to indicate the Arctic region each individual lived in. In some schools, children used their disc number instead of their name. In 1972 that the disc system was mostly removed, except in Nunavik, Quebec where it lasted until the 1980s. #EFryDidYouKnow Source: https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca//ar/project-surname See more

Did You Know - Landownership in Canada has a history of including discriminatory clauses in their land titles. In Vancouver from 1928 to 1965, real estate deeds... stated that That the Grantee or his heirs, administrators, executor, successors or assigns will not sell to, agree to sell to, rent to, lease to, or permit or allow to occupy, the said lands and premises, or any part thereof, any person of the Chinese, Japanese or other Asiatic race or to any Indian or Negro Similar clauses were used in Calgary, where Black people were not allowed to own land outside of a specific area. WILLIAM PENN (1726) The humble, meek, merciful, just, pious, and devout souls are everywhere of one religion; and when death has taken off the mask they will know one another, though the divers liveries they wear here make them strangers. This world is a form; our bodies are forms; and no visible acts of devotion can be without forms. But yet the less form in religion the better, since God is a Spirit; for the more mental our worship, the... more adequate to the nature of God; the more silent, the more suitable to the language of the Spirit. William Penn, WORKS, 1726, vol.1, p.842. (quoted in WAIT IN THE LIGHT, The Spirituality of George Fox, p.85.) Edmonton Quakers are thinking of you and wishing you good health and comfort. May we work to make the world a better place after this time of crisis and opportunity.
