Try Again By Pastor David Hamstra Sarah sent to the haram of a pagan king, Jacob's sons going to Egypt to buy grain from a hostile viceroy, Pharaoh being asked to let Israel go, Israel on the border of Canaan, Joshua attacking Ai, Nathan advising David about the temple, Baruch writing Jeremiah's prophecies, Jesus facing a hungry crowd with nowhere to go for food, Paul pleading his case before Roman officialswhat do these stories have in common? God's people finding themselve...s in the same situation more than once and having to try again. Sometimes it was their own fault, like when Nathan got out over his skis. Sometimes it was someone in the group's fault, like when Achan stole the loot. Sometimes God's enemies were to blame, and sometimes things just turned out the way they did. The common thread, however, in all of these examples is that God was bringing about or working through events in order to give people an opportunity to demonstrate their loyalty to him. In Greek mythology, a king, Sisyphus, was condemned by the gods to roll a boulder up a hill for all eternity, only to have it roll back down to the bottom as he neared the top. The twentieth-century existentialist philosopher, Albert Camus, interpreted this ancient myth as an allegory for how human beings can make their life meaningful without believing in God: revolting against the absurdity by continually trying again. But how much more meaningful, when we find ourselves in the position to try again, to take it as an opportunity to reaffirm our trust and hope in a loving God. As Alberta tries again to get transmission of the coronavirus to a manageable level, as we try again to make our financial ends meet with so much of the economy on hold, as we try again to worship together-apart, I trust that these sacrifices are not part of some tragic, Sisyphean task that is getting humanity nowhere in the end. For, regardless of the immediate consequences of these events, we can take them as an opportunity to express loyalty to Goda God who is coming soon to reciprocate his people's loyalty with an eternal reward.

Because of the new mandatory attendance limit that will be required by provincial law, your Edmonton Central Seventh-day Adventist Church Board has voted to transition back to online-only worship services as of this coming Sabbath, December 12, 2020. This means we will not be holding onsite worship services as of this Sabbath, but you can continue to experience Sabbath worship with your church family on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/ECSDAC The government has announced that... the attendance limit will last for at least four weeks. Your church board will resume onsite worship when conditions permit, but as of now, we do not know how long we will be meeting online-only. During this time, any other church meetings planned onsite will either transition online or be postponed. Further information will be provided in the weekly email newsletter. If you have questions or require assistance, please email [email protected] or call the church office at 780-420-0215.
