Nurses play an important role in our health care system, and we recognize, and are thankful for, their hard work and dedication to ensuring patients are well cared for and supported in their journey to better health. Meet Hollie, a nurse at Edmonton Comprehensive Care & Family Medicine. We asked Hollie a few questions about herself and her role here at the clinic: Q: What is your role at Edmonton Comprehensive Care & Family Medicine (ECCFM)?... A: My role at ECCFM is important, as the primary nurse it is my job to perform regular nursing duties, such as recording vital signs, administering injections, providing dressing changes and ear flushes etc. to patients. I'm also in charge of ordering the clinic’s medical supplies, and ensuring each physician has the tools required to provide the best care to our patients. Finally, I also review patient callbacks regarding appointment details, following up for results as well as documentation. Q: Why were you drawn to this job/clinic? A: I have five years working in private clinic practice and I really enjoy the more focused one-on-one time that I get with patients and physicians. I was drawn to the clinic because of the unique services it will provide to patients. ECCFM's goal is to focus on all aspects of care that are provided to patients. I feel honored to be a part of such a unique and growing practice. Q: What/who inspired you to take up nursing as a profession? A: My mother! I know, I know, that's a tacky response. But it really is the reason I took up nursing. My mother has worked in the health care field as a health care aid for 30 years and I have always admired her strength and courage to work in such a difficult field just so she could help people. I knew from a young age that I wanted to help people and be just like my mom, strong and courageous. Q: What do you like best about being a nurse? A: I love meeting patients and hearing their stories and backgrounds. I enjoy being able to help people with their medical needs, even if, at times, it’s just providing a listening ear. Q: What is the most challenging aspect about being a nurse? A: I think what can be very difficult as a nurse is finding a dynamic and supportive team. I have been lucky enough in the past and present to have a supportive team that has helped me to continue growing into the strong and independent nurse that I am today. Q: What are three interesting facts about yourself? A: I love cats! I have two: Luna and Pitch. I have been to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. While pursuing my nursing career, I have also worked as a health care aide and a medical office assistant.

Family physicians play an integral role in our health care system, providing lifelong care of individuals and of generations of family members. They are the primary point of contact between patients and medical specialists, and they assist with every aspect of health maintenance, including disease prevention, early identification, diagnosis and management, and so much more.
