The Edmonton Police Service Pipes & Drums and The Edmonton Firefighters Pipes & Drums are merging the 2 bands effective June 1st 2021. This will allow not only long term sustainability but also increased financial support, including wider ceremonial support within the first responder and military community. As a much larger community band, we will be able to better transverse the Edmonton region. Practices will now include donuts and fire station style Barbeques. #edmontonfir...efighters #edmontonfirerescue #edmontonpolice #freedonuts #bbqs #bigredtrucksandpatrolcars Update @ 12 noon......its April fools lol. The custom of wearing a kilt pin came in during Queen Victoria's reign to stop the kilt apron from flapping about too much and accidently showing more of the wearer's anatomy than the Queen liked. An old story goes that the Queen gave her own brooch to a soldier who was struggling with his kilt in windy conditions. Kilt pins now, are used mostly as a decorative piece but still functions to add weight to the kilt's open edge to keep it from blowing open or moving around. The k...ilt pin we choose to wear as part of our dress kit is simply a replica of a firefighters axe. The use of axes in firefighting has occurred for thousands of years and can even be traced back to 24 BC in ancient Rome. The Firefighter’s axe is one of the oldest and most practical tools used by Firefighters to this day. As a true multi-purpose tool, axes can assist firefighters with gaining forcible entry into buildings, search and rescue efforts, creating ventilation outlets, and investigating fire spread & overhaul Fire Axes are usually married and used together with a Halligan Tool, particularly during forcible entry operations. This combined set up is what Firefighters refer to as ‘The Irons’. Consequently, the firefighter's axe is now an important symbol which represents firefighters worldwide. #tradtionhonourpride #edmontonfirefighters #edmontonfirerescue #Pipeanddrumband #GlenEsk #gmbelts #firefightersaxe
A Sgian Dubh (pronounced ski-an doo) is a ceremonial knife with a fixed blade, typically worn with full Scottish highland dress. But has been seen worn with other highland attire. Its cutting edge is generally under three inches (7.6cm) and they come in many different designs. The word Sgian Dubh is Gaelic, and originates from Sgian meaning knife or dagger, and Dubh'' meaning black. The use of the Gaelic ‘black’ is thought to come from the use of the original black bogwo...od used for the hilt of the knife. Hundreds of years ago it was secreted away on oneself, it was also referred to as a dark weapon - hidden against the Highland custom of guests depositing weapons at the house door before entering. These blades were once hidden in a pocket under the armpit, but it has become customary to position the sgian dubh more openly as a courtesy. As early as the 1800s it was seen worn tucked into the top of socks in paintings, with a few inches of the handle showing. It was also a great tool to cut meat & fruit. Traditionally it is worn in the right sock with the handle showing, though strictly speaking a left-hander could wear it on the left. Once kilted and at the performing stage, Our members are given a Sgian Dubh with a handle made from shedded Scottish Red deer antler, hand picked in the Highlands of Scotland. Our members are also given the choice to wear a custom Sgian Dubh of their choice. For example, one with their family crest, or of material & design of choice. #tradtionhonourpride #edmontonfirefighters #edmontonfirerescue #glenesk #rghardie #stkilda #lochcarronofscotland

2018 IAFF HOCKEY TOURNAMENT OPENING CEREMONIES EDMONTON, ALBERTA APRIL 11, 2018... This was our first full public appearance. It was important for us to step out of our readiness and be there in support. Having all started from scratch with the Pipes & Drums a year prior, its nice to look back and see some improvement. We also played Amazing Grace, after a moment of silence in recognition and in Memoriam of the Humboldt Broncos victims, a tradegy that occurred 6 days prior. #traditionhonourpride #edmontonfirefighters #edmontonfirerescue #humboldtstrong #jaxonjoseph Video by Karina /Band members wife.

2020 year in review. Despite the pandemic, We managed to get out and perform in the community a hand full of times. We then completed a few virtual videos for remembrance day events including VE Day & VD Day 75 & MotionBall Edmonton. We were also able to offer our support at a few funerals. We scratched our way through about 25 band practices in between Covid restrictions and our practice facilitie being shut down. Virtual practices worked ok, and we continue to work on & imp...rove our musical merit. We all started from scratch in the fall of 2016, with a few members joining us in the following years. We welcomed a few new drumming recruits and a couple Piping recruits in 2020. In 2020, much like everyone else, we had to adapt, overcome & improvise. We want to thank all of our supporters and sponsors in 2020. It was a rough ride for many businesses and members of the public. We sympathize with you. Here's to clearer skies in 2021. #traditionhonourpride #edmontonfirerescue #edmontonfirefighters #pipebandlife #2020dumpsterfire
