The first business day of 2021 brings lots of mixed emotions on the heels of the most difficult year in History. The past month or 2 as I have been business planning for this year, I have found clarity in a path forward in 2021, and you might be surprised to know that my goals have very little to do with business, and everything to do with being better. I was fortunate enough to be a part of a virtual conference in December where I got to learn from several amazing mentors o...f mine. The one standout for me was a gentleman named David Irvine. He talks about the concept of a "To Be List" instead of a "To Do List". Now what if we all made a list of how we would like to "Be", don't you think the "To Do List" would naturally come with the things you need to "Do" to "Be" all of the things on your list. I'm going to start by telling you a little story in this video and expand on this topic moving forward. One thing on my "To Be List" is to be more vulnerable, and engaged with my friends, family, colleagues, and clients.

Anthony Henday Drive, is one of the busiest highways in Western Canada, seeing 108 000 vehicles each day in 2019. But who was Anthony Henday? A convicted smuggler, Anthony Henday joined the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1750 as a net-maker and labourer. He would travel further West, into what is now Canada, than any European at that time. From the 1600s to the late 1800s the HBC had the exclusive fur trade for the land within what was considered Hudson Bay's watershed. This r...egion was known as Rupert's Land. For the furs that HBC was after they wanted to trade commodities such as tobacco, kettles, axes, mirrors, beads, and alcohol. The HBC was concerned with western commanders who were funnelling fur trades from the northwest to their forts. This caused the chief at York Fort (Toronto) to suggest someone go to western Rupert's Land to encourage trade with the region's First Nations. The HBC authorized and funded Henday to lead explorations into the interior of Rupert's Land, using York Factory (In Manitoba by the Hudson Bay) as his base. On June 26, 1754, he set out with a group of Cree, on foot to travel from York Factory to present-day Red Deer, Alberta. So next time you are stuck in traffic on the Henday, think of its namesake. Travelling from Toronto, to the Hudson Bay, to Red Deer, by foot, canoe and horse.
