TGIF! Today Demi Henschel will be talking about goal setting for 2021: Success looks different for everyone! It is important to understand that it is not a straight path, there are many ups and downs and that’s where goal setting comes to play. Goal setting is a learned skill and just like anything else, takes practice! What is a goal? ... A plan of action, anything you wish for or choose to pursue and achieve. Something that is specific to you and what you really want. Here are a few tips to help understand goal setting! Achieving your desired goals takes time. Be patient and give yourself some grace! Why use goal setting? - You have a sense of control - Helps with improving confidence and decreasing anxiety - Can enhance motivation and focus - Emphasizes commitment - by writing your goals down, checking in with your goals, and holding yourself accountable A little bit about Demi: She competed nationally and internationally in tennis since she was 8 years old. She played Division 1 Varsity tennis at Presbyterian College where she graduated with Bachelors of Psychology. Following her college career, Demi went on to complete her Masters in Sports and Exercise Psychology at Georgia Southern University. Demi is currently working to complete her second Masters in Mental Health Counselling at Winthrop University. Hi everyone! We hope you are all finding ways to stay active during this lockdown. We have some fun tennis drills for you to do at home! Check out the videos in the comments on this post or head over to our Instagram. 1. Floor Tennis - Grab a partner, your racquet and a ball. Find an even floor surface and stand 2 meters away from each other. With your racquets, push/roll the ball to your partner. Make sure the ball stays on the floor the whole time (*ball should not leave ...the ground when rolling). Make sure to stop the incoming ball so you can control it. Be in your ready position so you can be ready for the ball to come! You can win the point by hitting the ball away from your partner or if they hit the ball in the off limits area. For example, in the video the off limit area is the side wall. 2. Hand Tennis - Grab a partner and face each other, around 2 meters apart. Get in a high plank position, and with your hand, roll the ball towards your partner (*the ball must stay on the ground the whole time*). Remember to keep your knees and chest off the ground while you play hand soccer. The way to score a point is if your partner does not reach the ball or if they hit the ball in the off limits area. For example, in the video the off limit area is the side wall. This is a great drill for your arm and core muscles! Eva and Sydney are 11 year old twins who have been members of the Edmonton Junior Tennis Society since summer 2016. Their parents thought tennis would be helpful in developing some skills like hand-eye coordination, teamwork and sportsmanship as well as strengthening muscles and reducing stress, and both girls have really enjoyed the experience as they have learned how to play the game. With EJTS, they have played outdoors at Coronation Park and Highlands, and indoors at Calder School, Ecole Pere Lacombe and, most recently, Kinsmen Sports Centre, learning from amazing EJTS coaches who have taught them how to play the game, but also how to become better athletes. When not playing tennis, both Eva and Sydney like to keep physically active by bike riding, taking walks, or playing soccer. Some of Eva’s other hobbies include drawing and writing, and she is also interested in coding and programming. Sydney enjoys reading when she is not being active. Eva doesn’t think she will play tennis competitively, enjoying the more relaxed style of non-competitive lessons and particularly playing with her family. In contrast, Sydney says her end goal for tennis is to play competitively. While she has never thought about playing professionally, if she had the chance, she thinks she would take it. When the Covid 19 lockdown began in March, both girls missed the opportunity EJTS programs provided to learn and improve in their favourite sport. To keep active and practicing, they made a makeshift tennis net to allow them to play on their driveway.(see picture). They also took many walks and bike rides and played soccer in their back yard. When tennis courts were re-opened and EJTS was able to offer programs in August, both girls were delighted with the opportunity to play and learn again, and look forward to further developing their skills while staying active and having fun #EJTS #tennisalberta #tennisedmonton #tenniscanada #stayactive #recreationaltennis
