We would like to take a moment to sincerely thank the Town of Edson for their continued support of our program. Edson & District Victim Services is a registered non-profit charity, meaning all of our funding is obtained through grants, donations, and fundraising. The Town of Edson has been a long-term supporter of our program and we are incredibly grateful for the continued contribution!

In preparing for our modified AGM this year, we were able to reflect back on 2020 and all that it encompassed. It indeed was a trying year for many, ourselves included. We wanted to take the time to send out another heartfelt thank you to those who continued to support us through the year: Edson Minor Hockey- Novice Division, David Bilodeau, Kinette Club of Edson, Cenovus Energy, Bonavista Energy, Kodiak Inspection Services, as well as those who dropped off items for donations. Your generosity is very much appreciated, and we wish you the best for 2021.

We would like to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for some recent donations we have received. The Kinette Club of Edson, Bonavista Energy Edson, and Kodiak Inspection Services Ltd., your generosity at a time like this truly means the world to us. It's certainly easy to be discouraged and frustrated lately, but because of your thoughtfulness, it has brightened our days, and allows us to assist people in their times of need. So Thank You!!! <3

A great resource for domestic violence situations!

This fund was created to benefit a population that traditionally has been overlooked by the Criminal Justice System. Changes have happened over time, victims are acknowledged and supported. The proposed changes to this bill could result in the progress made being undone......

We would like to send out a heart felt thank you to the 2019/2020 Novice level teams of Edson Minor Hockey for their thoughtful donation. They put on a special event at their home tournament this past year called the Cooper Pennoyer Airplane Toss, and they raised an amazing $497 for Edson and District Victim Services. This is meaningful to us not only because of the amazing donation, but the fact that the donation was raised in memory of Cooper Pennoyer, who was part of our RCMP/Victim Services Family. Thank you!!! <3

*Victims of Crime (Strengthening Public Safety) Amendment Act* Amendments to the Act will see the tearing down of the fundamental principles entrenched in the original Victims of Crime Act created in 1990. The Act collects a surcharge on fines assessed for various offenses in Alberta - this is not a tax. These funds are intended to support victim serving organizations in providing services direct to those who have suffered as victims of crime and or tragedy. That is about to change........... Please read our associations official press release regarding the changes and share with your friends and family.

After much deliberation and discussion; it is with heavy hearts that we have decided to cancel the upcoming 3rd Annual Austin MacDougall Memorial Golf Classic. With it being less than 2 months away, and still so much uncertainty if the golf course will be open and the event could even be held, its not feasible to put the amount of time and money into planning an event that may not even happen. We are extremely saddened and disappointed, but as with everything else in the world right now, completely out of our control. We honour Austin everyday, every time we think of his funny jokes, witty sense of humour, and awesome smile, or how he could make anyone laugh with even just a look. Hes always with us. Well sit this one out, but well be back. Stay safe and healthy everyone!!!

Edson & District Victim Services teams up with Alberta Health Care Services to put on the P.A.R.T.Y. Program (Prevention of Alcohol Related Trauma in Youth). Our organization has to raise funding specifically for this worthwhile project. The wonderful Charity Ball Tournament committee have decided to donate to the P.A.R.T.Y. program and help us keep this Grade 9 educational opportunity alive

Family violence affects the whole community... - Editorial Comment: Dana McArthur - Family violence is not only a family matter, it affects everyone in the comm...unity. November is Family Violence Prevention Month in Alberta and this year marks the 33rd anniversary of the creation of this important month of awareness. AHS defines family violence as the abuse of power within relationships of family, trust or dependency that endangers the survival, security or well-being of another person. Family Violence Prevention Month started in 1986 as a local initiative in the town of Hinton, where four remarkable Albertans, Katherine Kennedy, Sonja Bennett, Faye Wheeler, and Glenda Carter formed the Hinton Society for the Prevention of Family Violence and launched Albertas very first family violence education and prevention campaign. In an era when family violence was not talked about publicly, these courageous women inspired the Alberta Legislature to support family violence prevention as an ongoing initiative. This resulted in the creation of Family Violence Prevention Month. Statistics Canada reports 51 percent of women in Canada will or have suffered at least one act of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Its important to remember that abuse isnt just physical, but can also be verbal or emotional. There is no single organization or sector that is going to solve this complex social issue on their own. Everyone in the community has a role in preventing family violence and speaking out and discussing it can help break the cycle of violence. For more information the Family Violence Info Line is toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 310-1818. The Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women Society has a crisis phone that can be reached at 780-865-5133. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. (see our additional story on page 29 of the November 18, 2019 issue of The Weekly Anchor)
