Léo questions whether AHEA’s new Executive Director position will be beneficial for Alberta’s home educators or just for AHEA, and particularly the individual who happens to occupy the new position.

Léo discusses the work of AHEA and asks, What has been done to help and encourage Christian educators to understand why unschooling under the direct guidance of God with parents in full authority is not only what we are all striving for, but something truly worth defending?

Léo Gaumont explains that the vast majority of high school students in Alberta have chosen not to write the optional diploma exams.

Léo explains that public schools see any child that does not fit their one-size-fits-all approach to education as having to be fixed (for a fee), so he/she will better fit the mold. There is a real temptation for home educating parents to also find a problem with the child rather than question their own techniques and approaches.

Léo Gaumont discusses the odd situation of governments that sent children home from school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now complaining that some of those children are truant from their online schooling.

Léo discusses how the media seemed unable to understand the implications of children learning at home after schools were closed for the COVID-19 pandemic. Media generally reported that one hour of school work per day was sufficient without making even the slightest attempt to explain what (before the pandemic) was being achieved during the other five hours of an average school day.

Léo Gaumont explains that the COVID-19 lockdown demonstrated that many parents see schools as a baby-sitting or child-care service.

Léo explains that parents were teachers long before teacher certification was invented. In fact, the most well-documented reason for student success in education is that of caring individuals in their lives. Can you think of anyone who cares more than a loving parent?

Léo Gaumont asks whether students who are required to learn the names of trees by their school teacher, or students who learn the names of trees due to their own personal interest, will best remember what they learned?

Léo explains his lack of enthusiasm for the enforced homeschooling that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Having the students at home simply changed the venue of schooling and the methods of delivering school-based programming. It did not change what was being taught, nor did it provide parents with true alternatives to school. More importantly, few took the opportunity to question who has authority in education.
