In drawings, you can do things that in life you can't do. You can have the coronavirus be a thing. When you personify something, when you give something a body, you're able to talk about it, you're able to manage it." "When ArtistsInspire asks educators which discipline their students have the least exposure to at school, the most frequent answer is Dance! Our Artists facilitate engaging movement activities that students can do in their chairs, standing beside their desks, and moving in the space available." "Bringing teachers, students and artists together allows us to create unique and meaningful projects that would otherwise not be possible. It is easy for us to feel limited in today's world, but with virtual learning and creative ideas we can still make amazing things happen! This year I have developed workshops focused on mental health, community and connection. Meditative drawings to allow students to be mindful and relaxed. A collective mural created with students separate...ly to reaffirm a sense of community. A postcard exchange between schools from different cultures to establish new connections. In these times, it is more important than ever that we focus on our well being and connect. So let's make some amazing things happen!" -Emily Read Read more at http://www.emily-read.com/blog #elanqc #elanarted

"Last spring, I was invited to Laval Senior Academy’s It’s Complicated, a vernissage of student visual arts and spoken word performance that blossomed from their partnership with ELAN. A highlight of the evening were spoken word performances by a group of brave teens in Secondary 4 and 5. We saw polished spoken word performances reflecting on conflict, love, struggles, relationships, identity, purpose, and the difficulties of adolescence (anxiety, stress, judgement, fakenes...s, peer pressure etc.). Michael Clarke, the current director of the Throw Poetry Collective , explained to me that a ‘slam’ is a spoken word competition, democratized by the process of randomly choosing judges from the audience who collectively score each poem..." How can Artists inspire outdoor ArtEd projects? In 2019, Western Quebec Artist cj fleury completed two outdoor art projects with students from Sunnyside Elementary in the Eastern Townships community of Stanstead. In the spring of 2019, an ACE Initiative Artist in Residence project funded by the Secretariat for relations with English-speaking Quebecers involved more than 100 students in sharing how they see their community on cedar slabs that were then mounted on the exte...rior of the school. The school welcomed cj back in September 2019 to complete the first ever ArtistsInspire Grant project! A shipping container used to store bikes was transformed by a beautiful outdoor mural project with Grade 6 students and teachers: https://www.facebook.com/ELANArtEd/posts/493758931356131 Could your school use some outside art? Music and sound is everywhere! Here is a listening game we can all do wherever we may be. The task? Close your eyes and listen for 2 minutes. What sounds do you hear around you right now? Next, imagine yourself in your favourite place - what sounds do you hear in this place? Musician and ELAN artist Louise Campbell led this game and turned the results into the podcast Here and There with the clients, caregivers, family and friends of the C.A.R.E. Centre, a centre for people with severe physical disabilities. #elanqc #elanarted

This summer’s winner of the Great Summer Haiku Contest, hosted by ELAN ArtistsInspire online workshop series, is a prime example of the impact and magic that artistic mentorship can have on youth Our student winner participated in The Art of Haiku, a two-part online workshop led by award-winning poet Angela Leuck. She credits Angela as being the reason I started writing with more dedication. Their mentor relationship began two years ago during Angela’s ELAN ACE artist r...esidency. "I wrote it for people your age," says a young student who attended Monique Polack’s ArtistsInspire workshop How to Write a Picture Book. Monique responded, I told Tristan I was a little surprised he'd written a picture book for adults, but then I thought a second longer and I realized he had come up with a genius idea. If adults write picture books for kids, why can't a kid write a picture book for adults?!! We LOVE this idea! Read more in Monique’s blog post: #elanqc #elanarted #artistsinspiregrants #CdnHeritage

Watch and listen to our fourth Message in a Bottle music video! Using zoom as a window into each other's experiences, the Message in a Bottle sound and visual art workshop encourages us to observe and listen to our surroundings through contour drawings and games. This iteration of the workshop took a new step: we shared our observations to inspire new artworks. For example, everyone came up with a sound based on one participant's drawing (while on mute). And then the rever...se! A brave volunteer shared their sound and everyone experimented with making marks that feel like that sound. Have a look and listen to share our Message in a Bottle! This workshop was facilitated by Jessica Houston, Guillaume Jabbour and Louise Campbell, hosted in ArtistsInspire's Youth & Family interactive online workshop series in Spring-Summer 2020. #elanqc #elanarted #artistsinspiregrants #CdnHeritage
