#JimHartThis 48 totem pole is the original working plaster that this series of Jim Hart’s bronze poles are casted from. This is a rare, non-editioned work from 1984. This sculpture is based off a totem pole that was originally located in the village of Masset. In the early 1900's it was taken down and moved to Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC. During a storm in 1948 the pole was damaged, and the remnants were placed into storage. Many years later the MOA commissioned Jim Ha...rt to do a reconstruction of the pole. These two polished stainless steel forms one 12 and the other 18 feet in height are placed in a reflecting pool, and the highly reflective sculptures are visible from all adjacent buildings and corridors. Renowned author and city planner, Jane Jacobs, once said about successful urban neighbourhoods: there must ...be eyes upon the street, eyes belonging to those we might call the natural proprietors of the street. Jane Jacobs’s observation of communities became the inspiration for Eyes on the Street.
