One way to help our daughters to be more resilient is to teach them about their emotions. Here are the basics to get you started: Make sure your daughter knows that there are four basic emotions: joy, sadness, anger and fear. Next, teach her that each emotion is important because they give us information. Joy let's us know that something good is happening and it wants us to soak it in and remember it. ... Sadness let's us know we have lost something or someone important to us and it wants us to rest or accept help from trusted people or a pet. Anger let's us know that something unfair has happened and we need to stand up for ourselves or get help to deal with the unfair situation. Finally, fear let's us know that we may be in danger. Fear encourages us to keep ourselves safe. This is just a start for you and your daughter to build her resilience by helping her understand what the purpose of her basic emotions are. Even though girls on the spectrum tend to be vulnerable to experiencing meltdowns, there are ways of reducing the frequency of them. One way is to "Look for patterns." Start a journal where you can track some basic information about each meltdown. After one occurs and things are calm, jot down the date, how long it lasted and if anything helped to calm her. Next, think about what was happening right before the meltdown and reflect on what happened earlier in the day. It is i...mportant to look at both time points because the meltdown might be because of a series of difficulties that built up over the day or it could be because of what was happening right before she became overwhelmed. Some other questions to consider: Are there particular times of days that meltdowns occur? Are there certain situations that tend to overwhelm her? Do they occur more often when she is hungry or tired? Taking the time to write down what was happening before your daughter's meltdown, allows you to put supports in place to help her cope with difficulties that are predictable. If you have more questions about this send me a DM. #girlshaveautismtoo #neurodiversity #autismacceptance #aspie #aspergers #autismawareness #autismproud #autismmoms #autismfamilies #love #autismsupport #autismgirls See more

Meltdowns are scary for us as moms to witness in our daughters. However, it is not abnormal and we will support our daughters better if we give them space to feel their feelings intensely, instead of trying to interrupt the meltdown. The only time we need to intervene is if our daughter’s actions are putting her at risk of serious harm or someone else. #girlshaveautismtoo #neurodiversity #autismacceptance #aspie #aspergers #autismawareness #autismproud #autismmoms #autismfamilies #love #autismsupport #autismgirlsrock
