A learning moment for me today. As many of you know I am an Elder Dog volunteer. I am in love with my current charge who is a yellow lab and a service dog for a... lovely woman who is sight impaired. Today I had a fundraiser from the CNIB come to the house who told me that it costs 50,000 to link a person with a service dog. I am extremely careful when I take the dog for a walk and do not go on any off leash areas. I took her to a park today, in and on leash path and encountered a man had a dog with him that was off leash and a little aggressive. He was a jogger and did not even have a leash with him. He growled and made a lunge for my dog and I screamed at him to control his dog. When I calmed down, I explained to him that he was a service dog and not trained for aggressive play! So if you see one remember....they are valuable and precious. See more

PEKINGESE: According to an ancient Chinese legend, once upon a time a lion fell in love with a small monkey called a marmoset. The lion went to see Ah Chu, the ...patron saint of animals. He asked Ah Chu to keep him looking like a lion but make him smaller so that he could marry his love. The lion was granted his wish and he married the marmoset. Together they had a child. Their child was called the Lion Dog of China: Pekingese. Until the breed was exported by the British, only members of the Chinese royalty were permitted to own Pekingese dogs. These royal dogs lived a life of luxury and were usually carried in the sleeves of the royals, hence their nickname, Sleeve Dogs. After winning the opium wars against China in 1860, British soldiers returned to Europe with some of the dogs. The dogs quickly became a favourite of Queen Victoria and from then their popularity spread. Most modern-day Pekingese, considered to be a toy breed, are a bit larger than the true "sleeve dogs," and stand about 6 to 9 inches (15 to 22cm) tall and weigh about 14lb (6kg). Pekingese. come in a variety of colours and markings. They have long straight hair with a thick, soft undercoat. Pekingese dogs have fairly easy-to-care for coats, but they still need a quick daily grooming. Care must be taken to keep their faces clean, especially around the wrinkle on the muzzle. Calm and quiet indoors, the Pekingese is quite happy to spend their days curled up on a sofa. But he will also surprise you with sudden bursts of playfulness. Pekingese do not need long walks for their exercise. A short play indoors or outdoors in good weather is enough exercise for them. This proud little dog makes a good choice for an adults-only home, and especially for senior citizens. Most get on well with children but do not like any rough handling. They are very loyal dogs without being clingy and are usually polite with strangers and other animals. Fun Facts Betty White, Shirley Temple, and Joan Rivers are among many celebs who have owned Pekingese. Pekingese were bred to resemble "foo dogs," which are Chinese guardian lions. They were available only to royalty. If commoners were found with a Pekingese they could be sentenced to death. The dog was named after the city of Peking (today known as Beijing). Pekingese dogs get on well with fellow dogs, cats and other pets. A Pekingese named Sun Yet-Sen survived the sinking of Titanic in 1912.
