I am sure you remember the "Littles". We had lots of interest in these wee ones. They have been in their new home for eight days! The trial period is almost over and they are settling in nicely!

A lovely story of a family and their dog being reunited after 7 months!

Elderdog Canada Halifax Pawd 16.11.2020

Yesterday we said good-bye to Montana. She was a beautiful gentle soul and loved by so many. Her companion Hazel had to give her up because she moved to an extended living facility. In come Stephen and Ann, who welcomed this girl into their home and loved her unconditionally. She had lots of adventures, was very spoiled and was known everywhere because Stephen or Ann took her wherever they went. What is so incredibly beautiful about this story, is that Montana still got ...to visit with her previous mom. Stephen took her to visit on a regular basis, even special holidays, like Christmas Day. During COVID when we were in lockdown, Montana visited her previous mom through FaceTime. And Stephen took her one final time so that Hazel could say good-bye. We all mourn the loss of this darling dog. Please keep Stephen, Ann and Hazel in your thoughts as they grieve the loss of their girl. See more

UPDATE: Adoption Pending! ***Adoption Needed*** Meet KOTA, a dog with a hard start in live who has thrived under #elderdog care and is now ready for a #foreverfamily. ... Described by those who have recently spent time with him as an awesome dog, Kota is a healthy 5-year old, 50 lb lab mastiff mix. He was recently neutered, is up-to-date on his vaccinations and is in good health. Kota is well-mannered, calms down quickly when welcoming visitors, and generally enjoys being a wonderful companion. He’s very affectionate and loves cuddling on the couch to watch TV. He also enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs. In short, he absolutely loves attention. Kota has come a long way since he arrived in our care a few months ago. He came from a very stressful situation where he, sadly, spent most of his time chained to a post with no grass. His fosters have worked hard to introduce him to the outside world. Kota is now fully housetrained. He’s very intelligent and has learned his basic commands such as sit, lie down, come, wait and shake a paw. He loves fast walks or to run alongside his human (on leash). He doesn’t know his own strength and will sometimes pull. His fosters are teaching him leash manners and he is improving everyday. He gets the zoomies in the early evening which is his favourite time to play with his toys, especially his puzzle ball. A fenced in yard would be ideal for him to run around to his heart’s content. He’s eager to please and takes great pleasure in receiving praise when he does good. He loves meeting new people and was a perfect gentleman at the vet’s office. He gets nervous in the car when he thinks he’ll be left alone but after a few minutes, he’ll look out the window or enjoy a good car nap. Kota loves his people and needs someone who would be home most of the time as he does not like to be left alone. He becomes very anxious and takes a tablet of Clomicalm every other day. This may have to be increased initially when he goes to his new home. Whoever the lucky person is to adopt Kota will have to be patient until he figures out the new rules and routines. His fosters have been working with a trainer and he has had small successes but he will need time and continued behavioural training to overcome his anxiety. He will become attached quickly and be devoted to his new person once he settles in. Kota is currently being fostered in Waterloo, ON. By all accounts, he is a gem of a dog who has been through a hard start, and now is ready for a life with a special someone who will help him continue to thrive like he and all dogs deserve. If you are interested in adopting this amazing fellow, please contact Joyce Clark at [email protected] or text or call 519-865-4157. Please help us find Kota a home by sharing this post. Please remember, especially for dogs like Kota, while there may be many wonderful people interested, it will be important to find the best fit for him. We thank everyone for their interest.

We have started to see an increase in positive leptospirosis cases at the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic. Although we are not currently seeing the numbers we exp...erienced during the big HRM outbreak three years ago and there is no need to panic, it is still cause for concern. Leptospirosis can affect each dog in different ways, depending on their age and general health as well as other mitigating factors. Leptospirosis thrives in stagnant or still water, and the water is generally contaminated through the urine of affected wildlife. Dogs contract it through exposure to the contaminated water and wet soil. Leptospirosis is most prevalent this time of year : in the early autumn, when the weather is cooling but not yet cold. What are the signs? Some things to look for : Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, reluctance to walk, stiffness and/or painful movement, obvious pain and discomfort, increased thirst and urination ( or the opposite, inability to make urine), yellowing of the eyes/ skin, shivering, weakness, runny nose. There can be other signs as well - since leptospirosis is a bacteria that acts by entering the bloodstream and attacking organs, the symptoms ( and treatment) of one affected dog may not be exactly the same as another. It's also a public health concern ... leptospirosis can be spread to humans, especially the young or immune compromised. So what can you do to protect your dog? Vaccinate! There is more than one type of leptospirosis and the vaccine will not protect against everything. But it DOES offer significant protection, and it is the very best tool in helping to keep your dog safe. More than one of the unvaccinated patients we treated during the big outbreak had a strain of leptospirosis that was covered by the vaccine. Check with your family veterinary hospital to make sure your dog is up to date. And if you suspect leptospirosis, call your family veterinary team or the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic immediately.

We had the chance to visit with Lucy last week. She is quite the character. Guards her house like she is a lion. She is nervous of new people, but so loves her mama. She is such a cute little girl with her tongue lolling to the side. Happy we got to visit Lucy, you are a cutie.

Calling all woodworkers/chain-saw carvers! We need volunteers! This is a photo of one of numerous tree stumps on ElderDog Land at Feltzen South, Lunenburg County, that could benefit from the imagination of creative chain-saw carvers. We are hoping to get one or two carvers who are willing to carve dog related shapes into about 7 or 8 softwood tree stumps (mainly spruce) which stand from 50 inches to about 72 inches high and from about 15 to 36 inches in diameter. We expect there will be more stumps by the time the hurricane season finishes this year! If you are talented in this way, or know of people who are and might be interested in this project, please share the information and contact Tanya Ozard ([email protected]).

Abbie has been in her new home for almost three years. She has a very large personality for a small dog, and absolutely loves life and new adventures. Summer is her favourite time. She loves boat rides, cooling off in the water and playing with her siblings. She gets along with her fur siblings, and is her mama’s queen bee.

BENTLEY Great news! We have another foster fail! Paul and Crystal who recently lost Henry, another ElderDog, decided Bentley needed to be in their lives. Bentley had a lot of changes in the last year but now he’s living the best life ever. He likes his walks but really enjoys relaxing in the afternoons with lots of napping. He loves to be with us, is most happy when we are together in the same room. He doesn't like to be alone. Also, he wants all the attention, he is rather needy! If Paul and I are talking he interrupts us by nudging or whining at one of us. We are so happy to have Bentley, he’s such a good dog! Thank you

Today we honour and remember Charlie. He was a beautiful cocker spaniel that came into our care in May 2017. He was 12 at the time, and an absolutely darling gentle soul. Charlie was so loved for all of his life, and came to us only because his companion passed away. We were fortunate to find him a good home very quickly. He settled in with them immediately and became "their boy". Once again he was totally adored. He has crossed the rainbow bridge, and we wish him a peaceful journey. Our heartfelt condolences to all those who loved him. #elderdogcanada

Booty is a an adorable little dog. Our ElderDog volunteers have been providing support to her companion by taking Booty for daily walks. Sadly her companion became unwell and had to give up sweet Booty. One of our volunteers offered to foster her until we were able to get a wellness check and find her a new home. The two of them became quite attached to each other during this time, so what do you think happened? Booty is staying where she is! Emily has officially adopted her, and will give her the absolute best life ever! Below are pictures of Booty and Emily at the Butterfly release. We are so happy for Booty and Emily. #elderdogcanada

BENTLEY Sadly, we recently lost Bentley, a beautiful 9-year old who brought so much pleasure to everyone he met. Bentley lived with his companion, Shawn, for the first six years of his life. Though he was blind since the age of 2, he enjoyed being with his person on the farm, running around on the property and riding on the 4-wheeler. He was protective of the barn cats and loved snuggling on the couch. Both he and his companion went everywhere together and were like two p...eas in a pod. When his companion passed away in 2017, Bentley came to ElderDog Central Nova Pawd where Mike and Dara kept him safe until a long term foster was found. Enter Leanne from Halifax Pawd who saw him through vet checkups and taught him how to live with a family. He was special in so many ways. He was smart, sweet, loving and thoroughly enjoyed every single moment he spent with you. He loved meeting new people, other dogs, cats, car rides, walks, smelling flowers on his walks, swimming in the pond and most of all, snuggles on your lap. He may have been blind but you would never know until you were told. He had such a keen sense of smell he knew where you were and always found you and would lean in for snuggles and kisses. You, my sweet boy, will be missed. Bentley will be fondly remembered by the ElderDog volunteers, the family who adopted him and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting this gentle soul. RIP Bentley. You can run free again and see Shawn greeting you with open arms.

We are so blessed to have kind hearted individuals in this world. Keaton Speirs recently lost his best friend Mia. It was during the early stages of Covid and he was not able to be with her when she passed. He has been grieving her loss, as have his other family members. From this profound sense of loss and grief they wanted to find a way to make a difference for other older dogs. So they created a fund called Mia's Way. Keaton raised $7500 for ElderDog Canada, and gav...e us the cheque today. What a truly honourable way to remember his beloved Mia. Thank you Keaton for being such a kind and generous person. SpeirsTheAmazingHD Message from Keaton Speirs: May 2020 This isn’t the easiest thing in the world to write, but my dog Mia passed away suddenly a few nights ago. She was having trouble breathing, so we rushed her to the animal hospital. With the Corona Virus they wouldn’t let us in the hospital with her and said they would have to keep her overnight to get her breathing under control. They called us an hour later and said her chest X-ray showed fluid in her chest cavity and lung cancer in her lungs. They said there was nothing they could do for her. I’ve been heartbroken and empty ever since. Everyone loved Mia, from the biggest dog at the park to the grumpy old man walking past her. She could make anybody happy and loved being around her family. As tragic as this was, and as sudden, my mother and I wanted to make something good out of it, that Mia would be proud of. She loved making dogs and people happy. I made a gofundme in Mia’s name to help other animals that might be in need or not be lucky enough to have amazing owners like they deserve. I am proud to be working with Elderdog Canada and Proud of the fact that the money Mia's Way raised will be going towards helping animals in need. Mia will be always loved and sadly missed.

Many of our volunteers will remember Turbo as we used to walk him on a regular basis before his companion was no longer able to take care of him. He was adopted by a great family in October 2018. He is a sweet boy and just celebrated his 8th birthday. Happy Birthday Turbo!

Teddy came into our care during COVID. One of our volunteers offered to foster him, and what do you think happened? She fell in love with him! So Teddy stayed with her and is now in his forever home. He had extensive dental surgery and has recovered nicely. He is feeling good, loves his new mama, and is getting to experience lots of new things. He is the cutest little guy! And he is all boy. We are so happy for Teddy and Mary Ann!

Baroque is one of the dogs we walk on a regular basis. He is a fabulous dog. He just recovered from ‘Bloat’, a very serious condition. He underwent surgery and was very fortunate to pull through. Here he is getting ready to go for a walk with one of our volunteers. We are so happy that he is ok! He has become such a great pal to so many of our volunteers.

We are so thrilled that Joy has found her forever home with Kathy and Lionel. These two absolutely love dogs, and recently lost their beloved Marley, who was also adopted through ElderDog. A house is not a home without a four legged companion. They welcomed Joy into their home as a foster, and immediately fell in love with her. They have helped her through a surgery, and she is now recovering nicely. Joy is beginning a new chapter with these two lovely humans. Lucky dog! Congratulations Kathy, Lionel and Joy!

Elderdog Canada Halifax Pawd 30.10.2019

We are so sad to share the news that little Joy has crossed the rainbow bridge. This sweet senior came into our care in September and was in need of a new home. Maxine adopted her and fell in love with her right away. Joy was a gentle little senior and just wanted to be with Maxine. And Maxine loved her and spoiled her for the short time they were blessed to be together. "She was Mommy’s Little Girl" We send our heartfelt sympathy to Maxine, as she mourns the loss of Joy. Rest in peace Joy, you will never be forgotten.

Elderdog Canada Halifax Pawd 16.10.2019

We are going ahead with our annual Butterfly Release. As those who have attended before know, there is ample space for physical distancing and we will follow safety protocols. NEWS RELEASE HALIFAX REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY To Read the whole thing swipe up in my story or go to: https://www.halifaxtoday.ca//risk-advisory-due-to-possible... The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that due to the presence of a possible blue-green algae bloom in Lake Micmac, the risk advisory is being extended to Lake Banook. Residents are encouraged to avoid swimming and prevent pets from entering the lake, including at Birch Cove Beach, which will remain closed until further notice. The off-leash dog area of Shubie Park at Lake Micmac will also remain closed to swimming until further notice. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is naturally occurring in freshwater environments and may become visible when weather conditions are calm. These organisms can multiply rapidly during the summer, leading to extensive growth called a bloom. Some types of blue-green algae produce toxins during blooms and when these blooms decay, the toxins may be released into the water, posing a risk to people and pets. Lake users are encouraged to take the following precautions: Avoid water contact. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible. Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae is visible or in areas where a risk advisory has been issued. Avoid consuming water from this lake. Avoid consuming fish that has come from this lake. People who come in contact with blue-green algae or who ingest water containing blue-green algae may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea. Children and immune-compromised individuals are at a higher risk. If you have these symptoms, you are advised to seek medical assistance. Risk advisories are issued based on a number of factors, including the visual observation of algae blooms, test results and information regarding the current life-cycle phase of algae blooms. As algae blooms die and decay, toxins are released. Unsafe toxin levels can remain in the water even after the bloom is gone.

Meet sweet Emma. She found herself in need of a new home, and one of our volunteers offered to foster her, and within 24 hours she knew Emma wouldn’t be going anywhere. We love these ‘foster fail’ stories. Emma is a lucky little one, with Mama C. She has a constant companion who loves her dearly, and takes her everywhere. Here are two photos of Emma; one when she was first fostered and the other after a much needed grooming. Wishing you a happy life Emma!

We are so happy to share this recent photo of Lexi. She just turned 12 and is still enjoying the good life with her new mama. She is getting lots of exercise which keeps her healthy and of course is spoiled and getting lots of love. Isn’t she beautiful?

Always worthwhile reposting this, as giant hogweed is very bad for humans and our four legged companions.
