Decided to take advantage of the snowy, windy weather yesterday. Stayed inside and finished a commission!

I say the following to give some background info: I experience depression. I experience borderline personality disorder. When a depressive episode is bad, I feel depersonalized, disassociated, and sometimes feel severe anxiety/panic. I seek help for these things, and have been doing well, but episodes still happen. During these episodes I feel zero love for myself, which leads to me tearing myself down and picking myself apart. I am now much more self aware and can detect thi...s/stop it faster than I could before, but sometimes it doesn't always happen in time. When setting up my art studio, I embarked on an odd therapy project. I chose one of the walls of my art studio, and painted it black. I waited for a depressive episode. When one reared its head, I wrote the negativity I was feeling onto the wall. Some of the words have been from myself, TO myself... some are from individuals throughout my life, other people's words, that left their imprint on my own self-acceptance. I wrote as much as I could fit. It was dark, it was void of any love, it was destructive. But it was what I was feeling. I stepped back. I looked at it, all of it, all in one place, and realized how untrue it all was! How illogical! How off-kilter my perception gets when I am in that particular level of depression. I looked at it all, and I felt LIGHTER. It felt so good to release the negativity all at once. There it was, in front of me, and I was finally not believing a word that it said. I began to paint over it. All of it. Over the next few months I would work at it in spurts, on days of high self confidence, on days of no self confidence. I didn't stop until it felt "right". Until it felt "done". And one day, it felt completed. I felt that my goal has been achieved. Am I miraculously "cured"? Nope. Do I no longer feel any of these negative thoughts? Nope. They still come up. But I know that they are untrue. My perceptions may change, but the truth does not. And that has been life altering! See more

Because I'm curious! My favorite color (pigment) is black. Black goes with everything, it accentuates other colors, it creates depth, and it can invoke emotion.
