Happy International Women’s Day! Many Manitobans know about Nellie McClung, the famous suffragist whose activism lead to women in Manitoba getting the right to vote. But, did you know that the first woman elected to the Manitoba Legislature was Edith Rogers? Edith Rogers was elected in 1920, the first election in which women could cast a ballot. She was then re-elected in 1922 and 1927. The theme for #IWD2021 is #ChooseToChallenge. To learn more about the challenge of running for a seat in the Manitoba Legislature, please visit.https://www.electionsmanitoba.ca/en/Political_Participation.

January 24 is #EducationDay a day to celebrate learning, the best tool we have to empower people. Elections Manitoba believes that education is a key aspect in supporting and promoting the democratic process. To do so, Elections Manitoba has created the Your Power to Choose educational program. YPTC was developed in conjunction with educators to integrate the complete election experience with Manitoba’s grades six, nine, and elevel social studies curricula. The program is easily adaptable to other grade levels, plus adult education. Due to COVID-19, Elections Manitoba is not currently offering Your Power to Choose workshops. However, educators can find a variety of resources for teaching about democracy and elections on our website at electionsmanitoba.ca/en/Educators.

On this day in 1980, Manitoba election history was made when the new Elections Act created the office of the chief electoral officer. Richard Willis was the first to lead the non-partisan office of the Legislative Assembly. Before this, chief electoral officers were MLAs from the governing party. Under the new legislation, powers and duties of the chief electoral officer included enforc[ing] faireness, impartiality and compliance with this Act on the part of all election officers.

Although Elections Manitoba is celebrating our 40th anniversary this year, the first election in Manitoba goes back to the creation of the province in 1870. Elections in Manitoba sure have changed over the years! The first general election in Manitoba was held on December 27, 1870. Political parties as we know them today didn’t exist in Manitoba at that time, and neither did the position of premier. Alfred Boyd, a prominent politician of the day who held the title of Provinc...ial Secretary, is considered by some to be Manitoba’s first premier. Manitoba’s first Lieutenant Governor, Adams George Archibald, also played a prominent role in government, creating the voters list for Manitoba’s first election. That first vote in Manitoba would be unrecognizable by today’s election standards voters gathered at public meetings and voted by a show of hands. The secret ballot wasn’t introduced until Manitoba’s seventh general election in 1888. There were 24 Members of the Legislative Assembly elected in 1870, one for each electoral division. That number was increased as the population of Manitoba grew, to 55 in 1920. In 1946, three seats were added to represent the three branches of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force). Those seats were eliminated in 1949, and one more was added, bringing the total to the 57 we have today. Do you know your electoral division? You can find it at www.electionsmanitoba.ca/en/Voting/MyVotingInfo.
