Here is Karen Taylor Dyrda's take on the classic Canadian theme of the lone pine tree. We think Karen's work is a fine example of the tradition: vivid colours, bold composition, yet peaceful and evocative of the timelessness of the wild. Standing Tall (30" x 30", oil on canvas) https://electric-street-gallery.myshopify.com//karen-dyrda... It's among Karen's works currently on display in our pedestrian-friendly display windows at 299 Crichton Street (at Electric Street).

March is Animal Month at the Gallery! This week we'll be featuring some of the amazing collage work by Louise Palmer. Louise's compositions look at first like paintings, but they are made up of scraps from old magazines and books. A second look reveals each patch of colour has its own texture and meaning. The work is nevertheless very permanent - several layers of varnish make these into lasting artworks. Here you see "Do Not Disturb". https://is.gd/electric_y2102... This week the Gallery is featuring works by Karen Whyte. A veteran canoeist and kayaker, she paints from photographs taken in a canoe, giving her work a signature low vantage. Photos struggle to capture her remarkably moody and sensitive grasp of colour. The Gallery is again looking to meet new artists with a call for submissions to a theme show which will start October 29 and run through the holidays. Our theme is "Wings". Mostly it's about birds. Birds in flight, birds not in flight. Nests, eggs, feathers. The idea of flight itself! We are also willing to expand it to other flying creatures, real or imaginary. Butterflies, bees, bats. Angels, pegasuses (pegasi?), dragons. Even airplanes are appropriate!... We're looking for unique personal visions and positive life-affirming compositions for these difficult times. Because we are entering the gift season, we encourage submission of smaller, lower priced items, especially if you can offer them in a series. Please understand that we are a commercial gallery. If we don't accept your work that is a decision about what we think our market is interested in, and is not to be taken as a judgment of the quality of your work! If you are a local Ottawa area artist, think you have a suitable work or works, and are interested in participating, please register your interest at https://forms.gle/8apGJmXEWPkL3BS76 and we'll get back to you shortly about how to submit images of your art. We now have several regular artists whom we met through previous calls like this one. (shown: "Forest and Bird" by Zeynep Ergincan (sold) )

"The Last of the Light", fibre art by Phillida Hargreaves, available at the Gallery. Phillida says "This piece is all about layering sheers. First the background was put on, which had two layers of organza. Then six new layers of sheer were pinned, and then cut away, layer by layer through reverse appliqué, for the clouds. And then more layers of tulle were put onto the background, again through reverse appliqué. Until the piece was finished, I couldn't predict how it would turn out. An adventure!" The piece is listed at https://is.gd/elect_har010

Rock Surfaces - Arches by Phillida Hargreaves. "At the Arches National Park in Utah, you can find lines of quartz interrupting the red sandstone." Couched yarns on linen.... Electric Street Gallery 14.07.2020

This week featuring fibre artist Phillida Hargreaves, part of our "Autumn's Tapestry" exhibit. Of this piece, "Life Begins," she writes: "Lichen and moss are the first colonizers of exposed rock. I love their tenacity, and I spent many hours stitching intensively. The stitching I used for the moss is called sorbello. It's a knot which has the advantage that it can be built on to form many layers, and that offers extra texture. It is one of my favourite stitches. Painted cotto...n, ink-based pencil, tulle and embroidery floss." Her rock face works present an interesting tension between the cold, hard subject material, and the warm, soft medium. "Life is but a Dream" - photograph on archival paper. https://is.gd/electric_btw32 We close out our "By the Waterside" show by featuring photographers. This is a lakeside scene in Mexico, captured by a young neighbour of ours who goes by the name of Blake "El Explorador". Blake works in Ottawa in the summers and explores Latin America on his motorcycle in the winters. He has an excellent photographic eye as you can see! We will have many of his works in our print-on-demand ph...oto/giclée portfolio once we get it going. Meanwhile, #ottawaart appreciators have only a few more days to catch our 28 artist "By the Waterside" collection at the gallery!
