// The Botler AI project is an important example of what technology can accomplish for all Canadians. I was proud to announce, along with my colleague Marc Miller, our Government's support for this new way to fight sexual harassment in the workplace. It will help workers understand their rights and the resources that can assist them.

Black History Month this year in Canada has the theme The Future is Now. It is imperative to celebrate and shine a light on the many achievements of Black Canadians. While doing this, it is also important to learn more about the history of Black Canadians. Many history books are lacking in information on Black Canadian history. 1608 - Mathieu Da Costa is the first known Black person to have visited what is now Canada. He was hired by Europeans as a translator. 1628 T...he first known enslaved African in Canada was a 6 year old boy. He was baptized Catholic and given the name Olivier Le Jeune. 1799 Joseph Papineau created a citizen’s petition for the abolishment of slavery. The bills were defeated but it started a movement towards the abolition of slavery in Lower Canada. 1815-1865 Tens of thousands of African Americans came to Upper and Lower Canada for refugee by the Underground Railway. Harriet Tubman made 19 trips in secret to the South in America and guided more than 300 slaves to Canada for freedom. 1866 Mifflin Gibbs was elected to the Victoria Town Council, making him the first Black politician in Canada. 1958 Willie O’Ree became the first Black person to enter the NHL. 1995 Donovan Bailey, from Oakville, Ontario, became the World’s Fastest Human by winning the 100-metre sprint at the World Track Championships in Sweden. 2018 Viola Desmond became the first Canadian woman to be shown alone on a Canadian banknote. She fought against racial discrimination in Canada after being refused a seat in a White-only section of a Nova Scotia movie theatre in 1946. Black History Month is a reminder to learn more about the history, resilience, and current experiences of Black Canadians. We can then use that knowledge in our everyday lives to create a more inclusive and equitable future in Canada. https://www.youtube.com/watch See more
