As we get older we have to work out harder and with heavier weights to simply maintain the same level of muscle mass we had the year before. Lifting heavy has also been shown to improve endurance performance. Want to learn more? Click here: http://ow.ly/xfOZ50EhI1U #weights #yyc

PRP is a medical intervention that is becoming increasingly common as our understanding of its mechanism of action improves. Originally thought to help regenerate tissue and stimulate the development of new blood vessels, PRP is more currently understood to have anti-inflammatory and pain reduction effects that can help not only with joint issues but with muscle and tendon tears as well. Promising studies are suggesting benefit for those people with partial thickness rotator cuff tears and other tendon tears that are painful and slow to heal. As good as we are with assessing the biomechanical aspects of an injury; mechanics are not enough. Addressing the biochemical components of an injury means taking in to account day-to-day factors that influence your inflammatory processes, and modulating them to improve not only the rate, but also the quality of healing. Your initial consultation with one of our sport specialists is augmented with a review of these biochemical markers by either Dr. Eric Arrata or Dr. Rahim Moledina. Click the link for more information about our comprehensive practice. http://ow.ly/ycik50BFALx

Watch one of our specialists explain two ways to help determine if you're a heavy or smooth runner. Smooth runners absorb less impact and less vibration and have a lower risk of injury as a consequence. While it’s true that weight-bearing exercises can keep your bones and joints healthy, your body’s infrastructure can be susceptible to injuries from overuse. Muscles are not the only structures that can be injured through overuse, says Dr. Dale Macdonald, Sport Specialist and Clinic Director at Elite Sport Performance in Calgary. Nothing happens in isolation in the body. When impact is absorbed, numerous tissues disperse the impact throughout the body, and this can affect ...our joints and bones. When we run or play sports, the body’s mechanical system works overtime. It’s not uncommon for our body to absorb from three- to seven-times our body weight with every stride. This impact and the resulting vibration can have a harmful effect on the body’s bones and joints, especially when overuse comes into play. Click the link to learn what you might miss when you ignore early-warning signs with bone injuries (like shin splints) or with lower back pain. http://ow.ly/ifl550BDou6

If you think pain indicates your body isn’t up to the task of running, think again. It’s quite possible it’s your running shoes that are to blame. Many runners tend to think the worst when they come into the clinic with pain, says Dr. Dale Macdonald, Sport Specialist and Clinic Director at Elite Sport Performance in Calgary. Although there can be a variety of causes of new pain, one overlooked cause is worn-out shoes. It’s common for runners to use shoes for between one... and three years. Macdonald notes that today’s running shoes are simply not built for that kind of longevity. To give your body the best chance at a long running career, there are five shoe tests you need to do to make sure your shoes are still capable of doing their job. Want to find out what they are? Click the link in and start testing! http://ow.ly/eiX150BAoQZ

Pushing through pain could hurt you in the long run. We all experience some discomfort during training, and it’s okay to have some degree of achiness and soreness. It’s also important not to ignore your body’s pain signals when returning to your activity. Pain is our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong, says Dr. Dale Macdonald. The tricky thing can be discerning whether it’s something small, or something that truly needs attention. One of the most common ques...tions patients ask Macdonald when they’re returning to an activity is, how to tell if they are re-injuring themselves. His simple answer is: be aware of sharp pain and avoid modifications to technique. For example, if you are forced to limp or change your gait while running or you feel a stab of pain you should stop right away. On the flip side, if a run simply causes achiness and soreness, you are most likely fine to continue. Pushing through real pain is not okay, says Macdonald. That just increases the risk of a more serious injury that may stop you from enjoying that activity altogether. We’ve all heard it before, if you are injured, ice it. But did you know that icing for too long could actually be counter productive and lead to an INCREASED inflammatory response? Interestingly, applying ice for a period of time greater than ten minutes puts the injured area at risk for creating an even greater inflammatory response due to a phenomenon known as the Hunting Response. In a cold winter environment while walking outside, our nose and ears will turn red after som...e time because our body has sensed that the area in question is at risk of freezing. The body’s natural response is to increase blood supply to this area, thereby increasing the inflammatory markers in that area. Leaving an ice pack on for too long to an acute injury will create the same reactive increase in inflammatory response. We suggest patients use ice in ten minute intervals, ten minutes on ten minutes off for an ideal effect. Is an injury stopping you from your favourite activity? If you live an active lifestyle, chances are you’ve dealt with an injury at some point. You may have even heard this expression: repetitive strain injury. Often, for athletes or those who enjoy leisure sports, the thing that keeps them out of the game is not a sudden injury. It’s an injury caused by consistent, repeated stress to the body’s muscles, tendons, nerves and other soft tissues. Repetitive strain injuries are ...among the most common problems we see, says Dr. Dale Macdonald, Sport Specialist and Clinic Director at Elite Sport Performance in Calgary. People have a hard time not doing that physical activity they love. Macdonald understands that way of thinking. He and his colleagues in the clinic are all dedicated to their activities. He admits they can be a bit over-zealous at times, too. He notes, though, that doing something too long or too hard without adequate rest can easily sideline you from your favorite activity. Even when everything is going right and we aren’t in the midst of a global pandemic, life can be stressful. Many people turn to comfort food as a coping mechanism. The problem is, you may actually be making the problem worse. Refined carbs (those cookies and potato chips you’ve just downed) spike blood sugar levels and then cause it to crash, increasing stress and anxiety. Choosing healthy foods has the opposite effect, creating a favorable hormone signaling in the brain, whi...ch supports satiety, mood regulation and sleep and energy balance. It might help to note that those cravings for unhealthy snacks when stressed aren’t entirely your fault. When your stress levels are high, your body pumps out hormones that rev your appetite and send us straight for the junk food isle. Meanwhile stress can lead to a loss of lean muscle mass, which decreases your metabolism and increases your risk for weight gain. We’ve taken the guess work out of finding healthy, stress busting foods to include in your diet and compiled a list of some of the best food for you when you're stressed. Click the link to find out what these foods are, and comment your favourite healthy snack below! http://ow.ly/lfwh50Bv0XP

A lot of us are working in unusual circumstances these days, with makeshift home offices, online meetings and kitchen tables for work desks. Poor ergonomics can create a slouching posture that has implications for back pain, neck pain, headaches and even shoulder pain. These problems are compounded when you’re working on your laptop rather than an appropriately set up desktop. Whenever possible, use a mouse and position it close enough to you that you don’t have to reach at... all for it. This helps to reduce what’s known as anterior shoulder protraction, a position that when repeated enough will lead to shoulder pain, neck and upper back issues. Be aware of your posture, make changes to it as best you can, and consider seeing your chiropractor from time to time to keep small issues from becoming big ones. Stop delaying; start getting better sooner. Imagine how many activities in life have to be put 'on hold' when they have a debilitating shoulder ailment that impacts their daily activity. In Alberta, most shoulder surgical consultations take nearly a year (or more) to happen. VERY often patients are sent directly from their family doctor to a surgeon for consultation regarding their complaint, and only a small portion of patients who are sent to a shoulder surgeon actually e...nd up needing surgery. The rest (and even those who do end up with a surgery) would do FAR better with a course of conservative rehabilitation first. This is where we fit in. We can filter out those who truly need shoulder surgery from those who would do well with conservative care. Getting an accurate diagnosis and developing a tailored plan of management allows the patient to confidently take the first step toward getting better. We also provide pre-surgical 'pre-habiliation' whenever required, in addition to immediate and longer term post-operative rehabilitation.
