Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka continues to work diligently to provide access to services during COVID19. The Society has been able to adapt quickly to this ever evolving situation thanks to our new Executive Director, Meaghan Chambers. Meaghan has a passion for social justice issues, particularly those affecting marginalized and criminalized women and youth in our community. Thanks to Meaghans passion and tireless efforts, all 25 residents of Elizabeth Fry Society S...imcoe Muskokas shelter have been safely relocated to a hotel in Barrie. This move has allowed for the most vulnerable within our community to have the opportunity to practice social distancing and social isolation as recommended by public health officials. This unique situation brings unique challenges; please consider our most vulnerable, who have no home to isolate in and no family to help them at a time of need. Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka could use your help by donating nonperishable food items, fresh fruits and vegetables, toiletries, and breads. We are prepping healthy lunch meals for those that do not have access to make meals and transporting the food individually wrapped to the hotel for clients of Elizabeth Fry and David Busby. Donations will help the Society continue to support and keep the most vulnerable within our community safe. Donations can be dropped off at out office location of 102 Maple Ave, Barrie.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Did you know that according to data provided by Health Canada 15,393 apparent opioid related deaths occurred between January 2016 and December 2019? Experts believe that COVID-19 has caused overdose rates to rise in many parts of the country as the need for physical distancing has resulted in more people using drugs alone, and closures and reduced hours to community based services has also made it more difficult for people who use drugs to access safe spaces and support. International Overdose Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug related death. It also offers an opportunity to support families and friends as they remember loved ones who they have lost to overdose.

Did you know that on average JKH houses 460 women annually? During the pandemic, our occupancy has increased with an average of 40 women staying in shelter each and every night. 22,000 meals and counting! Since being relocated to a local hotel to allow for safer physical distancing to occur, Chris Hallman has led the Elizabeth Fry team to provide over 22,000 meals to residents of Joyce Kope House and David Busby Centre. Chris volunteered countless hours each week to help prepare, cook, package, and support our staff to ensure tasty meals are ready for residents every day! While COVID-19 has definitely presented new challenges, it has also provided an opportunity for our community to come together and support others in ways we never thought possible! Thank you, Chris for your expertise in the kitchen and your commitment to helping others! Your hard work and fun nature will be missed around the kitchen! #ourcommunitycares

SCATEH statement re Milligans Pond eviction, June 18, 2020 The encampments we are seeing at Milligans Pond and elsewhere around Barrie and Simcoe County are ...a survival response. Due to inadequate affordable housing options, many people experiencing homelessness spend months or years on waitlists and are forced to create their own communities in the form of encampments to meet their basic needs. We recognize that the City has bylaws in place that do not allow for sleeping overnight on public property, and at times feels the need to enforce these bylaws in response to constituent complaints. However, we have reminded city staff that forced evictions of encampments are a violation of international human rights laws and put the individuals experiencing homelessness in an even more vulnerable position. Rather than evicting encampments and criminalizing homelessness, we would like to see a focus on creating low barrier, affordable housing options - with the right options to match the needs of those living in encampments, evictions could be avoided altogether. We invite anyone concerned with the encampments to work with us to provide meaningful housing options to meet this need. This media statement and SCATEHs Position Paper on Homeless Encampments can be found at: https://www.scateh.com/advocacy.html

Today marks World Hunger Day and serves as a reminder that hunger is a global issue in need of a global response. In Canada, 1 in 8 households have experienced food insecurity in the last year, with women being particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. Data indicates 1 in 3 households led by lone female parents experience food insecurity, and 60% of the worlds hungry are women. These numbers are expected to be negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving even more people vulnerable in our communities. #Worldhungerday #Endhunger

Research has long recognized that the intersection of multiple social, health, economic and environmental factors put one at risk of being criminalized. It is no coincidence then that women, in particular racialized, young, and poor women, continue to make up one of the fastest growing prison populations in Canada. To imagine a world without prisons is to imagine a world of long term and sustainable actions to alleviate those risk factors. Instead, we dream of a world that focuses on supporting individuals to build on known protective factors, such as increased access to social supports, health care, and education. #imagineaworldwithoutprisons #efryweek2020

In this time of physical distancing community is as important as ever. The dictionary loosely defines community as a unified body of individuals. At EFSSM this translates to a group of resilient women, men, youth, volunteers, and partners with the unified goal of empowering and supporting one another to inspire positive change. To us, a thriving community is one of equality, support, understanding, respect, empathy, and resilience. What does a thriving community mean to you? #efryweek2020 #buildcommunitiesnotprisons

Tanya enjoys her time with the youth that come through the program. She loves getting to know each youth individually gaining valuable insight into the struggles of growing up in todays modern world. She believes this program is an important part of the community at large; giving the youth an opportunity to avoid criminal charges by holding them accountable in a meaningful way and saving valuable court time. Today please join us in recognizing and thanking volunteer Enda S! Enda is an incredibly kind volunteer who dedicates her time to supporting youth in our Youth Justice Programs in the Orillia and Midland area. Enda has had the privilege of working as an executive level Human Resources practitioner within various public sector organizations for over twenty-five years. She is a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) and holds a Master of Laws from York Universitys Osgoode Hal...l Law School. She is involved with the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA), the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario (ADRIO) and presently holds the position of Professor - Human Resources with Georgian College. Enda also writes educational material for Nelson Education Canada in Human Resources studies. When asked about why she volunteers, this is what Enda had to say: I wanted to volunteer for the Youth Justice Committee (YJC) with the Elizabeth Fry Society for a number of reasons. First, and foremost, I believe in second chances - we all deserve them. Second the opportunity to give back through the YJC helps to re-shape the community that we share together with all youth. Third social justice and restorative justice are not just theoretical concepts. I wanted to put these theories into practice in a meaningful and positive way because I believe in them - they are real. I am so very grateful to be part of making positive change happen in our communities through the YJC And we are so very grateful to have you Enda! Thank you for your continued support of youth and EFSSM!

Today please join us in recognizing & thanking Janet M. Janet is a stand out volunteer who dedicates her time to supporting youth in the Collingwood/ Wasaga Beach area. Like all of our volunteers, Janet has a unique background that provides great perspective in Youth Justice Committee Conferences. We asked Janet to share a little bit of her story: " In 1964 I began my working life as a registered nurse after graduation from the Hospital for Sick Children. I nursed for a few ...years in Toronto, then after marriage, at RVH in Barrie in the pediatric dept. In 1968 I was hired by the Simcoe County Childrens Aid Society and except for a hiatus for Maternity leave, worked as a front line social worker in various capacities for 30 years retiring in 2005. Very soon after retirement, I began caring my first grandson on a full-time basis and later for his brother. As their Mom is a teacher, I had lots of breaks during her maternity leaves and summers off. It was wonderful. The boys are now almost 16 and 13. My first post retirement volunteer commitment was with E. Fry. As Ive always enjoyed working with children and adolescents, and knew of the Youth Justice program, it seemed like a good match and has continued so to this day...never onerous, always interesting. Ive added other volunteer commitments, working with seniors, being a regular blood donor and in all kinds of weather gardening and growing a lot of our own food. My husband of 51 yrs. (the builder of our home) and I live on 46 acres south of Creemore. Among other things, in no particular order, I enjoy baking, walking, reading, and local theatre. Some recent health issues slowed me down but not too much." Thank you Janet for all that you do!
