It's almost that time again. School busses are getting ready to hit the road. Please be patient with school busses, now more than ever. Bus drivers have a lot t...o manage this year, which includes new protocols of taking attendance at every stop and ensuring children are keeping their masks on and staying in their assigned seats, on top of their normal duties. School busses may be moving slower than normal on the roads, over the next few weeks, as the drivers learn their new routes and these new routines. Please allow yourself extra time to get where you need to go, just in case you get behind a bus. Know that as frustrating as it is for you to be stuck behind the bus, I GUARANTEE, it is much more frustrating for the bus driver, trying to read directions and addresses, (those tiny, little 911 numbers are not easy to read), while also keeping an eye on up to 72 children, who now have assigned seats they hate, and masks they don't want to wear. The drivers are nervous about learning their routes and worried about everyone's health and safety. Allow the school bus drivers some grace, this year more than ever. Give them a friendly wave, show your support. Most importantly though... KNOW THE RULES! When driving on a road WITHOUT a median: Drivers travelling in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing. NO MEDIAN, NO PASSING!! When you approach the bus from the front, stop at a safe distance to let children get on or off the bus and cross the road. A safe distance is atleast 2 car lengths back. Not nose to nose with the front end of the bus. STAY BACK!!! Don't move forward until the red lights have stopped flashing, and the stop sign has begun to close and the bus begins to move. When driving on a road WITH a median: Traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop. If a school bus is pulled over with its 4-way hazards on, and no overhead lights are activated, you are free to pass them WITH EXTREME CAUTION! We stop, you stop! Wishing everyone a safe return! If you dont know someone personally that drives a school bus, let me introduce you! Bus drivers get up crazy early. They make sure the bus is safe for the stu...dents to pick up & take home. They have their head on a swivel for 6+ hours watching out for the millions of other drivers who cant see the big yellow bus OR the students crossing the road. They carry the safety of ALL students on their shoulders, they are SO MUCH MORE! They tie shoes, fix zippers & backpacks. Pick up a spilled lunch (or clean up a sick tummy mess). They care deeply, form bonds of trust, set expectations, give praise. Show concern & empathy, enjoy the silly jokes. Worry about the sadness on faces, miss an absent child or morn who moved without a word. Prays for them, laughs with them, hurts with them. Just to get up and do it again the next day. Many people dont realize how emotional, stressful, consuming, and rewarding it is. What a privilege it is to be a school bus driver. Huge shout out to my fellow brothers and sisters that care enough, are brave enough and can love enough to do this job! Thank you! Submitted by Colleen Lones, bus driver
