This is why we scope! This mare presented for a work up for bucking - a complete physical exam prompted us to check her for stomach pain. This mare had extensive ulceration along the margo plicatus of her stomach. The margo plicatus (meaning the folded margin) is a naturally occurring separation that occurs around the horse’s stomach. It represents a change in tissue type from glandular (protected from gastric acid) to non glandular (unprotected from gastric acid). This ma...re shows extensive ulceration along the non glandular portion of her stomach. Ouch! We have prescribed Gastrogard and look forward to seeing her again in a month! We expect her to be feeling much better!
