The boys of fall

Elmhirst Farms/Dairyhirst 04.10.2020

I’m tired Yesterday it was great to see so many share their love of dairy on World Milk Day. However, behind the scenes I was tagged in dozens of posts by gr...oups, individuals and organizations who used the day to spread misinformation about animal agriculture. Some of it was intentional but many people just don’t know any better (I don’t lay the blame on them). So who would you rather get your information about farming from? Rock stars and celebrities with millions of followers who are very much removed from agriculture or less than 2% of the population who are actual farmers dedicating their lives to tilling the land and caring for livestock? I guess when it comes down to it you can't really trust anyone but at some point you need to try. Everyone has been duped by someone at some point in their life. It could have been your spouse, a shady mechanic, a bad cop or a co-worker. Every sector of life has its share of bad eggs. That doesn't mean that everyone can't be trusted. Sure I have a vested interest in the dairy industry but here are a few reason that I hope you can trust me and other farmers on social media: 1) I'm not trying to sell you ANYTHING! Food choices are up to the individual and not once have I said that you need to consume dairy. It's the misinformation that I am battling. 2) I've let you into my personal life. I've shared my dreams and my heartaches. I am an open book. 3) I don't get paid a cent to blog. 4) I show you the good AND the bad of farming. There is no sugar coating. It's a good life but also a hard life. 5) I write detailed posts that explain not only what I am doing but WHY I do it. 6) I feed my family the same food that I produce. We shop at the same grocery stores and farmers' markets. My family is a part of your community. 7) I am pro-farmer. I don't bash anyone. I support all sectors of farming as long as they farm with passion and integrity. Taking care of the land and livestock for future generations is not only the right thing to do it is mandated by law and codes of practice. The amount of paper work, inspections and audits we do is mind boggling. 9) I could have chosen to do almost any job but I work 7 days a week and 365 days a year because I believe in what I do. 10) I make mistakes. I'm human just like you. I take the time to educated but also to listen and learn. We learn from each other. Thanks for following. Please tag your favourite farmer or farm organization in the comment section to thank them for telling their stories

Some carbon tax exemptions are available It’s no April fools joke! On April 1, 2019, the federal government will begin to charge a carbon tax on fuel in Ontario..., through the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act. But farmers and greenhouse operators can be exempted. Ontario farmers are eligible for exemption from the fee on gasoline and light fuel oil used for tractors, trucks and other farm machinery by completing form L402, a Fuel Charge Exemption Certificate, available through the Canada Revenue Agency. Greenhouse operators are eligible for exemption of the fuel charge on up to 80 per cent of the propane used for heating their greenhouses. They will need to complete L404 to provide to their fuel distributor. Visit http://www.ontariofarmer.com for more stories.

Vermont dairy farmers have been struggling for years due to low milk prices. It is no wonder that 321 Vermont farms have been lost in the past 9 years, as the p...rice farmers get for their milk today is virtually the same as it was in 1979. Meanwhile, President Trump’s erratic trade policies are further depressing milk prices at a time when farmers can least afford another price shock. The newly revised Milk Margin Protection program which acts like insurance against low milk prices has been an invaluable life-line for many farmers. However, farmers need a long-term solution to ensure fair prices for their quality products, and to my mind, that has to include managing the over-supply of milk.

Beginning today you will notice a new sticker being added to some ADL products. When you purchase ADL products you are directly supporting PEI dairy farm families.

#Canadian food sovereignty can’t be put on the table We’ll produce our own food just as long as we’re able We’re not bargaining chips to be traded away... If we go, you’ll be wishing you had us some day. But a country that no longer provides for itself Is beholden to others for foods on the shelf Across this great land, in rinks and in stadiums The responsible choice is to keep milk Canadian #NAFTA #FacesofSupplyManagement #MilkMatters #Cdnpoli Petition: https://www.thepetitionsite.com//canadian-consumers-suppo/ Please share!
