Elmwood Giants Baseball Club 03.05.2021

If you have a child aged 4 to 7 years old who wishes to learn how to play baseball, the Elmwood Giants are bringing back the Learn-To-Play program for the 2021 season. Because there have been queries concerning in-person Learn-To-Play registration, we will sign up those interested on Saturday March 27th, 2021, 12:00 noon,... outdoors at the front entrance of Koskie Field, 480 Chalmers Avenue, Winnipeg. The cost for the whole season is $25 and is done entirely at the Chalmers Community Club fields next to the Koskie Field batting cages. Strict health measures concerning baseball set out by Manitoba Health and Baseball Manitoba, which were adhered to last season by the Elmwood Giants high performance teams, gives us the experience to safely offer the Learn-To-Play program again. - We only accept cash or cheque. - Wear a mask. - Socially distance. - Please do not linger after registration. You may also send us an email using the "Send Message" button on this page, providing the child's name who wants to play, and pay at the first practice. This program is not exclusive to residents of North East Winnipeg. Anyone can join. If you have a young child, nephew, cousin or grandchild that needs to get out of the house and burn off some pent up energy, bring them out when you can. We will be at the field Sundays at 2:00pm, as well as twice weekly at 6:30pm (days to be determined). Stay safe, and come play ball.

With the recent closing of all Legions, and our backup locations closing as well, we are having the first draw, Saturday, November 7th, 7pm, at Koskie Field, in the utility garage. There will be posted video of the draws, group size no more than five at the draw site, and masks as required. We're doing our best to honour both our lottery licence and health requirements during this pandemic shut down. As was mentioned in an earlier post, any and all outstanding tickets (sold a...nd not!) can still be returned at two locations: Coach Al Kinley's at 451 Widlake Street (Transcona), or Coach Corey Gonske's at 255 Glenwood Crescent (Elmwood)

Cash Calendars: For those wishing to drop off their draw stubs and funds raised in person, the Elmwood Giants executives will be at the Elmwood Legion #9 at 920 Nairn Avenue Winnipeg on the following days and times: Thursday, October 29th 7pm - 9pm... Saturday, October 31st 3pm - 5 pm Note: (Legion meat draw occurs the same time) Tuesday, November 3rd 7pm - 9pm Wednesday, November 4th 7pm - 9 pm The first draw is Thursday, November 5th, so drop off or mail back stubs and cheques before then. Sound System: Our field speakers were stolen this summer, so we are studying how to replace and upgrade our sound system at Koskie Field. If you have know how, or connections in the sound industry, field announcer Rick Doig would like your input or contacts, and can be emailed at [email protected] Insurance: Even though we added enhanced locks and a security system to Koskie Field, our insurance costs have sky-rocketed to a level than is not sustainable for our not-for-profit organization. If you, or someone you know, are in the insurance industry, we would love to hear from you to address our future options. Please use the "Send Message" button above if you can be of valuable assistance.

With the Covid-19 case counts jumping this week, and restaurant transmissions listed as one of the contributing factors, we'll stay at Koskie this week. Louie has the coffee maker prepped, and we have assurances Ed will have the heater fired up. Starting Monday, October 19, 2020, for at least the following two weeks, we know group meeting sizes will be reduced from 10 to 5.... The Club has much to discuss, including cash calendar draw locations should the beverage room closings extend past two weeks (and ESPECIALLY what we would do in the event Legions are included as one). See you there! https://fb.me/e/1dgb7ZNKq

Are you up to solving a mystery? The Club recently acquired this image. The holder of the print recognizes the person on the extreme right of the bottom row as Ken Audrain. He would be the son of Bert (Albert) and Maude Audrain, owners of the Glendale Soda Shop, then at the corner of Henderson Highway and Johnson Avenue. It seems the restaurant "was a great hang for the Elmwood Giants back in the day". In fact, further research shows Bert served on the Board of the Elmwood Gi...ants Baseball Club at the time. In 1948, he was elected First Vice-President, serving with long-time President and another local business man: Alex Turk. Per the family, this image appears to represent the 1947 ('46?) Junior (Juvenile?) team. Do you have any information that would help clarify this information and identify more of the players, coaches, and other support staff?

The "parody" mentioned in the post might actually be "parity"... But we agree. It was an unusual season! Thank you Amateur Sports TV!

We are heartened and gratified by this message we received from a pair of the Club's fans after the recent conclusion of the 2020 MJBL season: "We would like to congratulate the Elmwood Giants organization for a great summer of baseball under less than normal conditions. The young men on the junior team and all the other team players, need to be congratulated for their ability to stay free of the covid virus which enabled the fans to enjoy baseball all summer! Their conduct ...and discipline are exemplary. The coaches of the Elmwood Giant Junior team need to be commended for a great season! Their ability to motivate, keep the players on track and safe is exceptional! Shirley & Aimé Delaquis"

Congratulations to the players and coaches of the Elmwood Giants Junior baseball team, who tonight defeated the Altona Bisons 5-4 to capture the provincial U21 AAA Championship for the third straight year. With five championships in the last seven years, this team is a likely candidate for a future place in the @Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Well done Giants. You have made us very proud.
