Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes that carry the larvae of the actual parasite. It can take 6-9 months from the time of the first infection by a mosquito, for the larvae to become adults, breed, and then release their offspring into the bloodstream. The infected dog can now be bitten by a mosquito who can pick up the baby heartworms and transmit them to another dog continuing the cycle of spreading heartworm from dog to dog. It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our team members. Our Elmwood Vet family will not be the same without you Daniel. We hope we can find comfort as a team during this difficult time. We are so lucky to have had you as a member of our hospital; we will cherish every moment we all had together with you. You were truly one of a kind, Dan. You were an absolute light in our hospital, always putting a smile on everyone's faces. Dan was always so thoughtful of... others, he would always go above and beyond for both clients as well as his coworkers to ensure everyone was happy. Dan showed so much compassion for every animal that walks through our doors, treating every animal as if it was his own. Dan is also very well known for his baking skills he made sure to bake a cake for every single occasion he could think; including birthdays, work anniversaries, technician appreciation week - the list goes on! Dan will always remain a special part of our team. Please know our thoughts are with the Taylor Family during this extremely difficult time. This afternoon, Dr Lizotte performed an emergency leg amputation on Emma her dog. Emma was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer from a surgery plate that was put in to fix a ruptured ligament in her knee 5 years ago. This is a a rare risk to a TPLO surgery. That TPLO surgery allowed her 6 years of comfort and the ability to enjoy her life. Sometimes fixing a problem can create another down the road. Sometimes despite our best efforts we can't fix everything and all we can do is keep our pets comfortable until the day that we can't. This year has been extremely difficult for anyone in the veterinary field has covid-19 has challenged all of us in ways we never expected. We would like to thank the clients that have been appreciative, understanding and supportive of us in 2020.

Canada is experiencing a veterinary staff shortage that is complicated by an increase of demand for veterinary services. Covid-19 forced everyone to delay procedures and we are still playing catch up. When we are fully booked, we may offer you a drop off/emergency spot. We recommend that you take it right away as our 4 phones line keep ringing and that spot will be gone the next minute. When our day gets overfilled to the point we can't manage any more cases, we will need to ...send you to the emergency where you may experience long wait times. If we fit you in as a drop off, please appreciate that you got a spot because a lot of other clients didn't. Please understand that the vets might run late calling you or seeing your pet because they are dealing with emergencies on top of regular appointments. We are doing our best.
