The Elora Swan Program 19.01.2021

Hello everyone! I am sorry to have to let you know that Miraculous Sawyer the swan we helped rescue in Waterloo has passed away. I had contacted a rehabilitation centre (Shades of Hope in Pefferlaw) to make sure we were handling her injuries properly, she had a suspect broken pelvis and we were doing right by her... rest and water tub time. Unfortunately you cannot always tell what is going on inside. She seemed bright and alert, enjoying her time with Wonder and we can know her last days were spent with care, comfort and companionship.

Lori Millson contacted me this afternoon in regards to a post on the Waterloo Birders Site about an injured swan at Columbia Lake. After almost 2 hours of searching we managed to find the swan. We had no idea of it’s location in the park, I am sure the swan gods were guiding us. I believe it is a juvenile Trumpeter or Tundra swan. In the next couple of days we will see how she is doing and try to find a rescue for indigenous swans. At this point in time she cannot stand but can move her feet when being held. She has shelter food and water on this stormy night.

See? Even swans know the importance of wearing a mask!

Hello everyone! Our cygnet "Wonder" has been removed from the pond at Wellington Terrace to receive nursing care. She has a laceration on her neck and two small punctures on her head. The punctures indicate that a four legged predator was involved. Visitors to the Terrace have reported sightings of fox, racoon and muskrat. Once she heals we will place her in the Elora enclosure for the season. This is her second injury this summer and we would not want to see her incur any others. Wonder is currently receiving wound care and on pen rest at my house. Thank you for keeping an eye out on the swans in between visits from our volunteers, this has enabled us to catch health issues in the early stages. All the best, Linda
