We are truly thrilled to introduce our new Persistent/Chronic Pain Program. This program has been developed and refined by our amazing physiotherapist Jennifer Stemmler. Persistent or chronic pain is pain that lingers beyond the normal time of tissue healing. This is a complex process where your nervous system becomes overly sensitive. In order to adequately treat your pain, a comprehensive approach is required, which focuses on not only your joints, muscles, and ligaments, ...but also your thoughts beliefs and lifestyle. Research shows that avoiding movement and activity has a negative impact on your pain levels, mood, and ability to participate in daily activities. Research also shows that even with medication to manage pain, pain rates continue to increase among this population. However, there is significant evidence that a comprehensive physiotherapy program, consisting of education and movement specific to your pain, can not only help you manage your symptoms, but improve your pain over time. This pain neuroscience approach is highly specialized to your needs and goals. We know this is a lot of information, and we are available to answer any questions you or your doctor may have. We offer complimentary phone consultations to review your health history, answer questions and help determine if physio is the right treatment for you. . . . . #ComplexPersistentPain #ChronicPain #SensitiveNervousSystem #EloraPhysiotherapy #GoalSetting #TherapeuticExercise #FeelYourBest #MoveYourBest

Hello everyone! Did you know our registered massage therapist John provides cupping treatments? Cups can be plastic, silicone and glass. Suction and heat can be utilized. The style of cupping we provide uses plastic cups and the application of suction via a pump! This is a soft tissue tool. The cups are placed on the skin and suction applied. The suction is used to separate the soft tissue layers, improve local circulation, and relax the nervous system.... Therapists use cupping to assist them in treating tight muscles, fascial restrictions, and trigger points. Therapists also use cupping to treat conditions like plantar fasciitis and tendonopathies. At the clinic, we have regular learning rounds where we review current research and treatment techniques, review complex cases and collaborate and learn from one another. This picture is from one of these learning rounds! John provided an inservice all about cupping and we all felt very relaxed after. As always, touch base any time with any questions, or ask your therapist if this technique might be a good fit for you! We are here to help you feel and move your very best! . . . . . #Cupping #EloraPhysiotherapy #SoftTissueTechnique #ImprovedCirculation #FascialRelease #RelaxTheNervousSystem #TriggerPointRelease #FeelYourBest #MoveYourBest

We hope you are all staying warm and safe out there. We wanted to highlight a treatment option we receive a lot of questions about: acupuncture! We are often asked how does it actually work, what are the benefits, will it hurt, and what conditions does it help with? Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into specific spots in the body to produce a therapeutic effect. The acupuncture works by stimulating a release of chemicals and hormones in the brain, spinal cord ...and muscles. This brings the nervous system to a balanced state that improves pain, muscle activation and circulation. It is a natural way to influence the body’s internal regulating system, help promote physical and emotional well-being and stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal. It is a gentle technique and there is little to no discomfort when the needles are inserted. Most clients report they find it really relaxing and often have a little rest/nap! We love to see that, as the acupuncture does it’s best work when the mind and body are fully relaxed. We also often hear specific questions like will it help with: chronic neck pain and headaches arthritis low back pain tennis elbow And we are happy to report the answer is: yes! If you have any questions or would like to learn more be in touch! We love helping you move and feel your best and acupuncture is definitely one of the tools that can help. . . . . #Acupuncture #NeurofunctionalAcupuncture #Needling #DryNeedling #EloraPhysiotherapy #PhysioCanHelp #FeelYourBest #MoveYourBest @kellygemmellphotography

In Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,... That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Did you know a meta-analysis completed by the University Health Network in 2015 found that sitting for extended periods of time increases the risk of disease (and death) despite other exercise during your day?? . Specifically, the amount of time you sit is linked with higher risk of heart disease, cancer and death regardless of exercise. It should be noted that the effects are less for those that exercise regularly. Unfortunately, more than half of an average person’s day is... spent sitting! . Recommendations are to first start monitoring sitting times as you’re more likely to change your behaviour once you start counting. The next step is to set an attainable goal and find times to increase the physical activity in your day. Some examples are to stand up or move at work for 1-3 minutes every 30 minutes; and when watching TV, stand or exercise during commercials. . So, the key is to assess what your sitting times are in a day and work to try to decrease it! Try one of these suggestions or let us know other ideas you have to limit your daily sitting! . . . #sedentarytime #increasedriskfordisease #eloraphysiotherapy #letsgetupandgetmoving #centrewellington See more

If you have followed us for awhile you may remember this post from last year! We wanted to remind you that with the flu season upon us, a lot of people (more so this year) are heading out to get their flu vaccinations. . This is a friendly reminder to watch out for prolonged shoulder pain after your flu shot. Physiotherapy is one of the recommended treatments for Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA). . SIRVA is when the vaccine is injected into the sh...oulder capsule rather than the deltoid muscles. Typically, SIRVA presents with shoulder inflammation, pain, and a decrease in mobility that does not resolve with time. . If you have any questions do not hesitate to touch base. Today is World Mental Health Day 2020. . The following message comes from the World Health Organization: This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from ...home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods are threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye. . The economic consequences of the pandemic are already being felt, as companies let staff go in an effort to save their businesses, or indeed shut down completely. . Given past experience of emergencies, it is expected that the need for mental health and psychosocial support will substantially increase in the coming months and years. Investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels, which have already suffered from years of chronic underfunding, is now more important than it has ever been. . This is why the goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign is increased investment in mental health.. . We feel there could be no better time to introduce mental health services at Elora Physiotherapy. Tasha Lake is a registered social worker and registered psychotherapist on our team. She offers counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and guidance for mindfulness and meditation practice. Tasha offers free 15-minute telephone consults to help you decide together if the fit feels right for your needs. If you or someone you love could benefit from these services please know we are always here to answer any questions you may have. See more

We would like to share a little more about our massage therapist John Balogh! . John earned his Honours in Kinesiology degree from Brock University in 2015. He then went on to complete a Graduate certificate in Exercise Science for Health and Performance from Niagara College. Upon completing this course he became a Certified Exercise Physiologist with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiologists (CSEP-CEP). John spent some time working as a Personal Trainer where he worke...d with young athletes and did in-home exercises with seniors. . And he was not done yet! John felt as though he was still missing something from his knowledge base and what he could offer the people he was working with, so he decided to attend Sutherland-Chan School of Massage Therapy to become a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). John graduated from Sutherland-Chan and Registered with the College of Massage Therapy of Ontario (CMTAO) to become a RMT. During this time he also became registered with the College of Kinesiologist of Ontario (CKO) to become a Registered Kinesiologist (R.Kin). . During a treatment from John you can expect a mix of relaxing rhythmic, Swedish, and fascial techniques with deep tissue, and trigger point release techniques. John also likes to incorporate exercise into his treatment plans in order to get you back to doing the things you love. . In his spare time you can find John hiking with his dog, mountain biking and playing hockey. To our valued clients, First off, we would like to thank all of you for your patience, continued support and words of encouragement during this time. We knew that when we opened our clinic in this community we would feel an abundance of support, but never did we imagine the outpouring of support that we would receive over the past few months. So, THANK YOU! Over this past week, the College of Physiotherapists, the College of Massage Therapists and the Ministry of Heal...th have all provided guidelines to allow us to gradually resume client care within the clinic. Following the best clinical evidence, we will help determine which services should continue to be provided remotely (video or telephone) and which should be provided in-person. We have been working at the clinic over the past few weeks to prepare our new policies and procedures to ensure that we will be able to meet these guidelines and re-open our clinic to our clients and the community, in a way that is safe for us all. We will still deliver the quality of care that you expect from Elora Physiotherapy, and even though things will look a little different at the clinic with some of these measures in place, we promise we will still be smiling behind our masks! So, on June 1st we will begin the process of resuming direct client care. Physiotherapy online appointments and massage therapy are available to book with our online booking platform, but all in clinic physiotherapy appointments must be booked by calling (226-384-1100) or emailing [email protected]. More information about our updated policies and procedures will be shared with you once your appointment is booked. We are always here if you have any questions, at any step along the way. As we continue to respect the need for social distancing, we will embrace this new hybrid model of online and in clinic appointments but as always we will continue to provide you with the highest level of rehabilitation care. It found physiotherapy-guided exercise programs were the most effective option for treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). We are thankful we have still been able to create and guide you through individualized exercise programs for your OA during this time with our video appointments. We are in this together. #centrewellington #physiocanhelp #bestpractices

What a beautifully written post by @phitphysiomeg We wanted to share this. We wanted to let every one of you on our waitlist know that we hear you and understand. We want to reconnect too in the very unique and powerful way we do with our hands on treatments. . We know too that how we structure care and the flow of clients in the clinic when we can resume direct client care will have to adjust to new social distancing guidelines, but we will have all of that in place so yo...u can do what you always do when come here...focus on yourself and your health and wellness. #eloraphysiotherapy Posted @withregram @phitphysiomeg T O U C H. As physiotherapists (and all health practitioners) we touch people. Its only part of what we do, but its a pretty magical part of what we do. . You see, touch transcends the physical body. It speaks its own language; it gives comfort, it provides healing, it expresses empathy and it elicits hope. . Touch is a bit of a naughty word these days. We have come to equate it with fear. I cannot express how important it is that we not become a society that fears touch, contact and human connection. Allied Health professionals are the BEST people to bridge the gap of staying safe and prudent during a global pandemic while also facilitating touch, health, wellness and connection. . Our waiting lists are FULL of people that so desperately need this exact connection. They are surviving but not thriving. Virtual care is amazing and an incredible innovation, but it is not for everybody or every Body. . It is so important for our leaders to understand our value in society - particularly this society that is paralyzed with fear and anxiety. Health and well-being should be at the cornerstone of our collective recovery. . . . . #bringbackrehab #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #alliedhealth #healthandwellness #physicaltherapy #moveon #phitphysio #touch #connection

What is the first thing that comes to your mind that you are thankful for? Throughout a lot of uncertainty, stress of many kinds and concerns about the health of yourself and loved ones this is one small, daily practice that can truly help. . Today our gratitude is for this extra time with our kids at home, and the bonus of some sunshine today to be able to play outdoors. #gratitude #thelittlethings #centrewellington #eloraphysiotherapy

Our online video appointments have been going really well. To be honest, better than we were even expecting! We knew there would be a ton of value doing them > continuing to provide education on your condition, adjusting dosage of exercises, helping you manage your pain, reviewing execution of exercises, gait training, progressing mobility and strengthening exercises, answering all the questions that have arose since we saw you last in person. . There have been some surpri...ses though too... We have been surprised at how much new, incredibly valuable information we are also learning through these online video assessment and treatments. Being able to see how you actually execute your exercises at home has been amazing > a wealth of information there and the ability to coach you live instead of simulating it in the clinic. Also, the ability to complete a true ergonomic assessment of your home office/work station has been very insightful and powerful. Lastly, we are always very focused on trying to truly understand what your goals are and how the problem (or what you are seeking help for) is impacting your life. Being able to connect with you through this medium has made the focus even more on communication and has helped us solidify we are on the same page with you and working towards your goals. . We know this is a very trying time on all of us in so many ways. We are so grateful we have the ability to book these online video appointments with you and keep you progressing. We are here when you need us > video appointments, emails, phone calls. And we will keep up the virtual high fives, until we can high five your accomplishments in person again! #eloraphysiotherapy #stillconnected #centrewellington #videoappointments #movingforward See more

Elora Physiotherapy is still here for you! We are now offering online video appointments for appropriate new and existing clients. Online video appointments are also called telehealth appointments, and means providing health care services at a distance. This form of therapy has been utilized for years when in-person treatment is not available. Literature that has examined telephysiotherapy has looked at the assessment validity and reliability, treatment effectiveness an...d patient satisfaction and has found consistent evidence that telephysiotherapy can be very effective when direct client care is not an option. All you need is your laptop, phone, iPad, tablet or computer with a microphone and camera. Many insurance companies are recognizing the value and need for online video appointments. For now, we recommend checking in with your insurance company directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information on which appointments types are eligible for reimbursement. For more information email [email protected] or call 226-384-1100. To book online visit our website: www.eloraphysiotherapy.com. We will continue to offer complimentary 15 minute phone consultations to any new and existing clients. We miss you and are very happy to be able to stay on track and keep you moving towards your goals! #eloraphysiotherapy #centrewellington #onlinevideoappointments #telehealth #socialdistancingbutstillconnected See more

We may have shifted how we interact with you to utilize a ...lot more emails, videos and phone calls but we are still moving forward. . You guys are resilient, adaptable and unstoppable.
