One of the rewards of being a designer is when you get to work with talented writers. Our daughter Moira is now officially in that category from a creative design perspective with this series of posters we put together today for her Columbia Journalism School class president campaign. Great words make for easy design! Vote early and vote often!!

Kudos to my colleague Larry Burke for not only designing a stamp, but having it featured by one of the country's top editorial cartoonists!

Love the genius of the original London Transit map and how it works no matter how complex the transit system.

Given all the outcry and media attention this week over the newly introduced word mark for the City of Vancouver, the budget and the end result, the bigger question should really be why, after how many years, the business schools are continuing to fail at teaching its students about the power of good design and how to work with a design firm? They teach them how to work with accountants, lawyers, researchers, planners, coordinators, etc., etc. but rarely designers and marketi...ng specialists. Or if they do, what are they teaching them as the default seems to be "let's have a logo contest" or going to the lowest bidder. Is this really what they teach at UBC Sauder School of Business?!?! Why is it always incumbent upon designers to educate their clients? Obviously the staff at CoV thought this was a perfect design solution. But were they qualified to make this decision? Is this wordmark the "throwaway concept" that Hangar 18 included? Or, given the minuscule budget, is this all they had the time to do? Is it phase 1 of a multi-phase development plan? Personally, I hated the previous mark that first appeared tacked on to the Olympic city signs, and then in vehicles. It seemed ill-conceived and overly simplistic. Decorative, rather than thought-provoking. Not part of a comprehensive rebrand or forward looking communications platform or strategy. But to jump all over this wordmark and cry foul seems ill advised to me. It merely points to the much bigger issue of how poorly design is understood by those who are ultimately empowered to purchase and oversee its implementation.

Exactly how we feel about most award shows these days which is why we're helping the GDC with a new format of recognizing design excellence for Canada 150. https://vimeo.com/190586768

Interesting debate on the value of "testing" designer applicants. http://www.rgd.ca/insights/news_post/2073.php
