I’m pretending not to hear them while they fight. The sound of the water helps a bit. Happy 3000th day of lockdown.

Let's make your child's first year book. One of my services is making people photobooks. One of the most common is your kiddos first year. Join me as I make a book for @bodycotoronto - Mel has a 7 year old daughter, Charlotte, who is in need of a book. Over the next 3 weeks I'm going to make her a book. If you'd like to follow along your best bet is to sign up for my newsletter by following the link in profile. Step 1 comes out tomorrow with a short video of me interviewing Mel.

Emily D Photography 03.05.2021

If you're not on my newsletter list then you might have missed my interview with @jesskosphoto where we talked about how she turned her Grandpa's slides into a wonderful family photo book. Follow my link in profile and send it to your parents - it will simply answer the "what should we do with our slides' question? Surely I'm not the only one who gets asked what do with them.

Raise your hand if your spouse is the reason you can't access your photos? Today in my newsletter, and on my blog, I'm giving you a detailed list of common issues faced. I can't tell you how many IT spouses have these sophisticated back up systems that, well, don't really work for the purposes of simply gaining access to print. If you want help figuring out what to do join my class - it starts on Monday and I would love to have you.

There are photos that will tell the story of your kids life. To you this is a kid on a bike. To me it’s my little guy who refused to ride a bike, constantly felt like he couldn’t so didn’t try - this week he asked for a bike, had me hold on to the back for 100 metres and he was off. It has led to multiple - ‘Hey Mom, I really can do hard things’. Conversations. It will be the image I put on the front of cover of his annual book and the story we retell about Evie doing things in his own time - from potty training to riding a bike to... a visual we will come back to that proves ‘slow and steady is how you roll’. Join me on Monday in my course chaos to keepsake so we can tell your stories.

Last week, or was it the week before, I got to visit @metiviergallery and photograph Sarah Massie to announce her new role as Partner at the gallery. It was so nice to be in a beautiful space surrounded by life giving art and to celebrate her accomplishment. By celebrate I mean - I was wearing two masks and was standing waaaayyyyyy more than 6 feet away. Congrats again Sarah

In Week 2 of my course, From Chaos to Keepsake, I teach students how to create a plan for their books. It starts with understanding what you want versus how you're going to get there. It's actually the single biggest indicator of success in the course. Like most things when you identify the WHY - we can easily and swiftly get to you to the making process. In my family - I have three photo books: 1. I create a book of portraits for each of my kids from 0-5 years of... age. The books are lay flat and follow a simple design lay out. The cost under $100 to print and I do it every year. 2. A sticky album that shows growth - I have one for the kids first and last day of school and one for Thanksgiving because it's my favourite holiday. 3. A series of 6x6 books that I make whenever I feel like it - think holidays, fun days exploring, a recap of our daily walks in 2020, big trips, little trips, a day when the light was just so etc. 4. Just recently, if you follow my newsletter you know, a life book of our parents. This is my list because my WHY is to tell the story of our lives. You'll notice I didn't say I want to tell the story of my everyday - that's why we don't do an annual book. In fact, it wasn't until 2020 and, well, Covid that I had any desire to do make an annual book. Do you want me to show you how I lay out an annual book? I'd love to hear how you tell the story of your life. @pikto #makeportraits #chaostokeepsake

My dog sniffed another dogs bum on a hike today. The woman told me to contain my dog in a snarky voice. I smiled and called CAbot back - she didn’t come. The woman kept yipping. I smiled mischievously at Evie while ignoring her which enraged her even more. This came just after Doug good for nothing Ford cancelled school. I’m shocked the woman lived to tell the tale. Evie looked confused and said ‘Oh Mom now I know what you mean when you say - sarcasm doesn’t look good on you’. I’ve never been so happy to have a child without a filter in my life.

I'm baccccck - I didn't go anywhere of note. In fact, I had nothing nice to say so I kept my mouth shut. You're welcome. I do have a funny story though. I was listening to my little one on a zoom call today and when the teacher asked what he did over the holidays he said 'I hung out with my cousins and went for lots of walks at the Brick works'. Uhm, wait what? No we most certainly did not. When I asked him why he said that he said 'I felt embarrassed to be talking so I said what the kid before me said'. I've been chuckling about it all day. If you need to laugh a lot call me and I'll let you listen to 20 kids on a zoom call it's so sweet and sooooo funny.

My dear friend and wonderful client, @bodycotoronto, is hosting a six month women's wellness group aptly called The Wild Collective. It's designed to focus on all aspects of your health and wellness. It's for women who are already great and want to access another layer of their health and wellness. Personally I have spent my 30's building my business and raising my kids - what I haven't done is put an emphasis on my health both mental and physical AND I'm most looking forward to being in community with 20 other amazing women. If you want to join me or learn more head over to @bodycotoronto - it's already half sold.

Emily D Photography 20.12.2020

I'm going to do something fun - every Saturday join me here on Instagram for my key learnings, insight or best questions I've been asked in my six week course - From Chaos to Keepsake. One of the biggest frustrations people have in the first week is that we don't get started on the doing in Week 1. In the first week I make sure everyone has their photos backed up properly (hard drives can be like bears they don't like to be poked), I get everyone to make a list of ...things they want to remember - not to be confused with the list of books they want to make - and lastly I have them send me an indoor and outdoor photo they have taken and love so that I can edit it for them. Everyone gets a custom editing plan that best suits their work - almost like a filter but not actually like that at all ;-) The first week is about laying the ground work - it's a bit annoying but you wouldn't clean out a giant closet if you knew you didn't have a place to put your stuff. Well unless your my husband then you just leave it in the hall and hope I'll do something with it. This photo above is a composite I did for some of my favourite monthly clients - I photographed them every month together and created a beautiful composite they could hang in his bedroom. When I personally print photos I always go for timeless - very very few parents will actually pitch a family photo they printed. For all the parents who did those beautiful month by month photos of their kids - together or individually - did you print them? #chaostokeepsake #torontophotographer See more

I can't tell you how many messages like this I get. Helping people make sense of their digital clutter is the single most random skill a person can have. If you want to benefit from my mad skills ;-) - follow the link in profile the course will NEVER be this cheap again.

This isn't the Christmas I was hoping for - I'd rather be on a beach in Jamaica watching my Dad become best friends with all of the staff. Happy Holidays here is a bit of cheer from my family to yours. My Dad will be furious that I shared a photo of him on the internet but that just means we'll have something to talk about on our non stop facetime calls today.

I'm working on something really special for all the new parents out there. It pains me that I can't snuggle your newborns - if you know of someone who is about to welcome a new squishy baby or recently did please tag them on this post. I'd be really grateful. Really really really grateful if we're being perfectly honest. A special thank you to @beingthismama for your generous invitation to her amazing new podcast.

If the pandemic had a vision board - this photo would be slapped on it. To the parents who have children too small to ever get a break I SALUTE you. My kids are 8 and 10 and although this is so far from ideal they can still passably do a lot of basic things. I'm always so curious - how old are your kids?

Teenagers hate having their photo taken. Parents hate having their photo taken. You can't take pictures in the winter it's too cold. I got hit harrrrrd on the ski hill on Sunday by a 15 year old shit snowboarder who got the scolding of his life. I’m fine please don’t send concussion protocol tips - I have all that I need from @omachiropractic and @bodycotoronto at least the lockdown means I don’t have to watch my family ski without me for much longer. #silverlinings

There are a handful of photos that I love of my kids. Can you think of five photos? Can you think of one? That one shot that you could look at in 20 years and conjure a memory? This photo was captured 7 years ago - kid I printed it today I would need to edit it a bit so it would print beautifully. It was taken with my professional camera in RAW - if this same photo was taken on my iPhone it wouldn't be as sharp (remember cameras then aren't what they are now) - but it would still print beautifully. If I did nothing his skin would be a bit orange, his eyes would be black and the shadow around his eye would bug me ;-).

Emily D Photography 14.10.2020

Organizing your photos is a truly useless activity. We often treat our digital library as a physically storage locker. But the truth is your digital files are more like perishable foods. You have to use them, ie, print them, in the season(wish) you take them - otherwise they won't print well..... or at all. Last week I printed an image of my friends parent who passed away. Over coffee she once shared that looking at it on her phone brought her a lot of comfort. Fast forward f...ive years later the image, with the help of me, is a poor representation at best. It's also five inches by five inches - if we went any bigger it wouldn't print. If you're having an 'oh SHIT moment' because you have a photo that you adore - send it to me. During my holiday downtown I'll try my best to fix it up and print it for you. I'm a big BIG dork when it comes to printing photos. #chaostokeepsake See more

I've photographed ALOT of massage therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and and and - you know people who put your ole bod back together - and what they all have in common is how they centre themselves by closing their eyes. It's my favourite little quirk and one of the most impactful images I take. In many cases they don't even notice that they do it. If you need a nourishing massage visit the gals at @slowmedicine_co you won't regret it.

I dropped a very large F bomb in front of my little guy when I realized outdoor photography services were shut down last week. Being shut down in my busiest season - not once but TWICE in a year is infuriating. It's senseless, lacks true leadership and leaves small businesses devastated during an already insane time. My 8 year old Everett repaid my bad behaviour with saying the F word repeatedly this weekend - he looked at our dog and said FUCK OFF Cabot during a peaceful hike on Sunday morning for cutting him off on the path. . Seriously thought to my fellow #smallbusiness owners I hope you are finding your footing - after finishing up photoshoots in the sleet and rain yesterday I'm blaring my anthem - Bring Me A Higher Love (bless you Whitney Houston) and figuring out what lies ahead.

And if you don't want to leave your house - book a porch session. This, my friends, is what a 4pm weekday session looks like. Book me on a day you have to shower and be presentable for zoom and you can kill two birds with one stone. I photographed this family on Monday and just delivered their photos. This is a great experience to give or to do yourself. Follow the link in the profile to sign up.

Mini Sessions - I have two more time slots scheduled on Saturday from 2pm - 2:30pm and 2:30pm - 3pm -- and in that time we'll get a full range of shots - classic Grandma shots, classic silly ones and family loving each other up ones. All while being socially distanced and safe. Follow the link in profile to sign up. #torontophotographer

I know that covid numbers are climbing and I feel your fear. I just took this photo at a morning session at six feet away while wearing a mask and being safe. The boys had cute sweaters but opted to slip back into their jackets. Did you notice the boy on the left has a small stain on his jacket? Don’t answer that I know you didn’t. Which is why clothes don’t matter - I have two spots free for tomorrow’s mini sessions. I hope you’ll scoop them up - there is still time.

Emily D Photography 27.07.2020

And just like that - @kamalaharris DID IT! If I had a loonie for every time someone told my family to go back to where they came from. Or to stay in my place I would be able to pay Trumps back taxes.

During week 1 of my course, From Chaos to Keepsake, we talk about and do two main things. The first is backing up your photos in two physical places. The reason for this is because in sooooo many cases when you start going into your archives the likelihood of something going wrong is really high. From hard drives glitching because they are old and get overheated to you accidentally deleting something. This step is the single most boring but important tip. If you're thinking about creating photo projects for the holidays don't even consider it until you complete this step. Next week I'm hosting a LIVE chat for my course participants but you can join us too on Tuesday. I'd love to know what you're current back up system is. #fromchaostokeepsake

Emily D Photography 20.05.2020

Each week I aim to create a piece of content for my blog that I send to my newsletter. This week I offered my newsletter community some quick tips for getting an amazing shot of your little one. In short the tips are: 1. Find a grey wall (cement on the side of almost all schools is what I"m talking about) during the early morning or late afternoon for most reliably good light. 2. Know how to use your camera before you get your kiddo in front of the wall. If using an iPhone t...he light meter focal box is your bestfriend. 3. Engage with your little one - remember the goal is to photograph them AS their character. If you want to see my full post visit my blog or comment below and I"ll private message it to you. If you join my mailing list I'll edit your best effort and send you a print if you do it by November 2nd. Halloween will be different this year but I'm hoping an interaction like this with your little makes it a bit sweeter. #halloween #torontofamilyphotographer See more

October is small biz month. I know a lot of people say support a small business because you’re supporting my dreams. I don’t need you to do that for me - thanks though. How about purchase from small businesses because they are almost always better. I may have a family but that’s not why you should buy from me - you should buy from me - I’m better than any box store. Always and forever, forever and ever and ever and ever - amen. Tag you’re favourite small businesses. #octobersmallbusinessmonth

During the rush of family photo season I’m so grateful for porch sessions as an offering. They have sincerely been such a gift. My favorite is when I step out of the car and think - hmmm, we’ve met before. Sweet sweet @kathymottonpr your photos are gooooooood good good. #torontofamilyphotographer

I got a new studio! Weird right? Well, my phone is ringing off the hook for branding sessions and headshots. If you're on the fence - reach out. If you're wondering about safety, who isn't really these days, we can talk through. I shot this image of Mel @bodyco two meters away, with a mask on, in a well ventilated room and was dripping in hand sanitizer. I only do one shoot a day and sanitize all surfaces out the wazoo. #businesswoman

Not pictured G whining that she didn’t want to be on my team. That was after I reminded her about all of my friends who played basketball in university AND how I was on my high school team for ten to twenty seconds. No respect.

Happy Birthday to my Dad. He will be furious that I posted a photo of him on the Internet but I promised him a trip to Cuba to fulfill hoods dream of driving cars around Havana. Here’s to moving milestone birthdays to next year.

If you're on my newsletter list then you know about my new package called - I don't like my porch but I want a deal. Funny eh? I offered 10 time slots and my newsletter has already scooped up 6 time slots. It's for an outdoor session, that takes 25 minutes and photographs your sweet family in a safe way. If you want to grab a spot follow my link in profile. I have two spots left for this weekend and a few porch sessions available as well but you have to send me a message for that. On a safety note: The second wave is raging we can, mostly, all agree on that. Your safety and mine are of utmost importance. A porch session or mini session like this allows me to stay six feet away and still produce gorgeous results.

Emily D Photography 09.03.2020

What a way to end this day - after a full day off shooting and very little sleep after that doozy debate. Here’s to double rainbows and brighter days to come.

Emily D Photography 22.02.2020

At the beginning of the year I had to say goodbye to my beautiful studio that I had been renting for a few years. Then like magic another appeared just when I needed it. Here are a few snaps from my session last week with the exceptional mother daughter team @thelynngroupto - if you need a headshot or branding session please consider booking with me. I love this little studio and my wonderful friend who made space for me to use it.

Emily D Photography 14.02.2020

Hooooooooo boy did I serve myself more than I could chew this week.

Emily D Photography 29.01.2020

Porchtrait sessions just keep getting better and better and better. If you’re hoping for a family session this style might be a good bet for you. It’s socially distanced, feels really safe to do and garners exceptional results. Dm to get on my waiting list.

Just a kid trying to escape his Mom who’s trying to take a picture.

Emily D Photography 12.01.2020

And they are back! I told Georgia - QUICK your friends are coming and will see you hugging your brother. Everett was just pummmmmped. On a related note that little slap bracelet filled with hand sanitizer was purchased from @cryingoutloudto - the store that is salve for our weary pandemic souls. #firstdayofschool

This week I took the week off to go camping again. I’m making up for a lifetime of thinking I hated it. Has anyone rented a beach house in PEC? We want to spend a month there next summer.

I made a canning cabinet and it’s like the third kid I never had. Joy meter is realllll high after a day of canning tomatoes.

Emily D Photography 06.11.2019

SIX months of working, living and juggling these beauties *mostly* all day everyday. As we head into September and back to school I’m feeling grateful for an upcoming mid sept trip I’m taking to PEC. It was meant to happen earlier in the summer and I threw my back out - now the timing feels divine. This September won’t be filled with resolutions and driving hard into the end of the year. I feel good about my daily habits since I needed to lean into them to keep me sane these last six months. What are you doing to reward yourself for thriving? Side note: if you’re alive and mostly unscathed consider yourself thriving) through this time.

Emily D Photography 25.10.2019

Better late than never - thank you photo-book for our friends who hosted us for a cottage weekend last year. Who cares if giving a gift a year later is a bit dirtbag-ish. Anyone interested in making a summer photo book with me? Dm for next steps. Dirtbags Unite.

Emily D Photography 09.10.2019

This is my niece - she's 3 - and a certifiable handful. Everything about her, including her irrational tantrums over wanting her brothers chocolate ice cream when she doesn't even like chocolate, is perfection. I can't imagine having a baby at home navigating these weird times. I really can't. Solidarity to the parents, like my brother and sister in law, doing a banner job freaking job engaging their kidlets all day everyday. #niece

Emily D Photography 25.09.2019

To all the Moms who are experiencing obscene judgement about how you parent your kids during the pandemic - remember this - people who are passing judgement on you are morons.

Emily D Photography 05.09.2019

I've moved from wanting another baby to wanting another dog. Is that what happens in life? We just go from wanting to parent one cute thing to another?

Emily D Photography 25.08.2019

My weekend porch sessions were, as usual, a hit. I will happily book another weekend time slot in September if there is interest. Drop me your preferred date in the comments and I"ll try to make it happen.

Emily D Photography 08.08.2019

We’re baaaaaack - thank god. My kids loved camping. I still feel like bugs are crawling on me. I should note not a single bug was knowingly on me - I did see about a million though. In conclusion camping is the best and I’m already researching rv trips it’s my new thing.

Emily D Photography 24.07.2019

The only thing worse than public bathrooms is public bathrooms on a camp ground during covid while walking your pea sized bladder children to and from like a sucker. Why wont they pee in the woods you ask? @michelecrockettphotography introduced them to poison ivy. Our walks to and from involve never ending conversations about poison ivy in their *down theres’.

Emily D Photography 16.07.2019

@michelecrockettphotography invited us to go camping. She has reminded this guy 20 times to stop screwing with the lantern. And then it broke. I constantly ask her what we should be doing next like she’s my Mom and fancy concierge. We brought almost nothing of any value. My daughter forgot her entire suitcase. We’ve been in bed since 9 and my kids have complained loudly about how dark it is. Changed their clothes and underwear four times (we stopped at Walmart) and everytime we hear any noise (which is always) the kids comment about it. I may sneak off and check myself into the Drake. If you’re wondering Everett is hitting poison ivy wirh his stick that he also rubbed against me AND ate marshmallows off of. This was after Michelle explained what poison ivy was and this guy charged after it like a sociopath.

Emily D Photography 12.07.2019

I took the go train, for the fourth time in my life maybe, up north to meet up with my family. And not a single person is wearing a mask properly. Some not at all - some with masks over their mouth - and one man is even sneezing and takes his mask OFF to sneeze into the air. .

Emily D Photography 27.06.2019

Yesterday I finalized the details for a family photoshoot. My husband asked me why I couldn't just take a photo of our family and put my face into it. This is what I wanted to do him but not in a playful way like I was with Evie but in a -- hurt him just a little bit sort of way. I forgot that, despite how wonderful they are at the session itself, they are kind of annoying leading up to it. Anyone else or just me? Photo from our last family session with one of my favourite buddy ol' pals - @yanpalmer

Emily D Photography 07.06.2019

My porch sessions were such a hit last month I'm bringing them back in the not so distant future. If I hear from 10 people I'll open up a weekend time slot. Andddddddd go! If you want to see a few samples follow the link in profile.

Emily D Photography 24.05.2019

Dog days of summer. Got this guy back after a week away and he’s miserable and bored. #typical

Emily D Photography 12.05.2019

Let me be clear about the perceived impossibility of this photo + 4 overheated teenagers + 1 small child so over the family session because, well, she's a kid + 2 unflappable and fun loving parents who let their kids be and left me to fully manage the shoot What you don't see - ... + Blistering heat + Many angry looking shirtless dudes speeding past on bikes grumbling about us being in the way (we were safely out of the way - thank you very much) + Big giant Toronto public park + full sun why? It was the only time this busy family could make it work so we rolled with it. When I hear people say - my kids will never cooperate for a photoshoot - I think to myself - there is not a single thing your kids can do that mine haven’t to the power of 900. Seriously don’t deprive yourself of this experience because you’re worried your kids (ahem or spouse) won’t be into it. They probably won’t be and together we’ll giggle and tease them about it. When people ask me how I am I say - mostly good with the occasional dose of really really bad. Like many of you I have a place to live and enough to get by but the emotional blow that sometimes gets me in the gut feels sucky. Today I took this gal to my favourite pen store - she thought it was boring and whispered through her mask "Mom I feel short of breath - the longer we stay in here the border I get. I don't like anything in here". I did what every mother would do - I to...ld her to sit on the front step of the store, where I could see her, and continued to touch every notebook (Japanese paper is my favourite) and tried at least five pens - all of which I already own. That experience was mostly great with a sprinkling of reallllllllll bad. Any other die hard paper and pen fans here? My favorite stores are @takenote @paperpluscloth @wonderpens any I’m missing? I send my clients a dressing guide when they sign up for a photo with me. It is simple, filled with tips and ends with this - clothes don't matter. At. ALL. They do not matter. Let your kids wear the goggles, princess dress or their pyjamas. You can bring another outfit and I can effortlessly negotiate with your child that they get x photos in the suit and y photos in your outfit. Trust me - the photos of your kids wearing the goggles and, more importantly, you feeling great in your perfect black dress will be cherished and celebrated. Our family motto is 'you do you boo' although Mike still needs to come around to that.

My course and photography products were born out of a desire to get photos off of your device and into your life. Last year I photographed the Rethink Breast Cancer website relaunch and was surrounded by amazing women who had Metastatic breast cancer and guess what? It was the least interesting thing about each of them. I wrote a post on my blog today about why you need to print your photos before they deteriorate particularly photos of loved ones lost. The title reads - Cele...brating Sad Stuff - I'm not a writer and I'm sure I said 100 wrong things but if you know someone who has lost a child or a loved one and needs to preserve those precious images - join my course or have me make your books. If you want to think through a concept I'll do that for free. To read the post please visit my site https://www.emilydphotography.com//Pyri4PY2pD5idO5t9SQWdcn

Raise your hand if photographing your kids turns you into the *not so best version of yourself* ;-). I wrote a post about alternatives to telling your kids to smile. I'd love to hear what you think. https://www.emilydphotography.com//you-won-t-get-the-resul

I spend so much time talking about the importance of printing photos and when I do I'm often met with blank stares. The reality is this - digital files age like any other piece of technology. Imagine for a second you wanted to play a VHS tape on your new high quality TV. You would need to buy adaptors and go to all of this trouble to get it to work only to discover that your movie is really low and disappointing quality. The good news is, with some professional help, you can still access the photos and print them. They won't be art show quality but, if you're like me, you're just desperate to print your favourite photos of your kids. I have a handful of photos from my daughters first year that I would be sad to lose. The second one was taken by my friend and fellow photog Andy Han

I get asked a lot about how to take a great photo. The reality is this - photography and finding the right light hasn't changed since the beginning of time and I can teach you how to light a photo but a truly great photo requires you to determine what your subject is. Saying - oh my kids - is not enough. What do you want to photograph? Them being silly, them standing in front of a statue (probably not ;-), them interacting with one another? I posted a blog post about taking a great shot - as always you can find it on my blog. https://www.emilydphotography.com//how-to-improve-your-ind

How do I edit photos? My first answer is this - head over to Instagram and learn a few great tips on how to set up a photo so you don't have to edit. The issue with editing so much after and putting on filters is that if you don't print soon after the photo actually loses resolution because of all of the *interventions* for lack of a better term. I'm showing an 6 year old photo taken in bad lighting - because of it's age and the not so great lighting the photo won't print the best. A few tips you can make is to play with the white and black points or make it black and white. Turning a photo into black and white isn't something I would suggest from a color photo but if it's old and the image is moving towards being high contrast/will never print well give it a shot.

I think I snapped this photo five years ago at a workshop I was at. The family were designers and the @chatbooks they printed from a secret instagram account perfectly captured their family. Designers and photographers and people in creative fields learn something that many others don't - the process is messy and it's allowed to be messy. In my course I'll teach you how to FIRST identify the story you want to tell and THEN we will move into the type(s) of books that would bes...t tell your story. My wonderful friend Krista, and mother of four girls, doesn't have any books - instead she has fives boxes - one for every girl and one for her - inside she slips a handful (think 5 tops) of photos from each year and TADA it's cheap, cheerful but most of all it's a perfectly curated story of their life - she decides what is important and doesn't fret over it. Regardless of your price point or the story you want to tell there is a solution that will fit in your time constraints and fit within your budget.Follow the link below to sign up https://www.emilydphotography.com/p/photobook-making-course See more
