This week's e-DEVOTIONAL Word Wisdom Read: Psalm 119:1-88 When I was a teenager, just before the wheel was invented, I wanted nothing more than to serve God. My biggest challenge was time. I started to work full-time at the age of seventeen. I was also working toward a Certified General Accountant’s degree - University level courses that required an 80% grade to pass, as well as a job with responsibilities that paralleled the level reached within the program. I was presi...Continue reading

This week's e-DEVOTIONAL Read: 1Kings 1-2; Psalm 37; 71; 94 When I was a young boy, the park down the street had what everyone called a ‘slide’. It wasn’t. Sliding on dry concrete was not one of its best functions. Scooting barely worked. But it was high, and it had a ladder up the middle of it, and it provided for hours of imagination and fun every summer. The first one to the top used to stand tall and shout I’m the king of the castle, and you’re a dirty rascal; and... no one paid attention. Oh well. In our story, we have a similar situation. King David was very old. He was cold all the time. They tried warming him up with blankets, and that didn’t work, so they got him a stunning young virgin to lay beside him to keep him warm. David forgot that he was cold. Solomon had not yet been officially appointed ‘king of the castle’; so his older brother Adonijah tried dashing to the top. This was a new situation for Israel, as they had never been in this circumstance before, but in most surrounding countries it would be traditional for the oldest son to take the throne. It was no secret that this was not David’s plan. He had promised Bathsheba that their son, Solomon, would be his successor. Not only that, God had already made clear that Solomon would be the one to build the temple. Adonijah gathered some significant support, and then sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves to God; I suppose in an attempt to get His support. Following that was a giant feast, and the people shouted ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ In the meantime, David is tipped off. Even though he was old and cold, he was no dummy. He had Solomon mount David’s own donkey, representing a king coming in peace. He had a priest and prophet anoint him as king, then Solomon entered the palace and sat in the king’s throne. The trumpet blew, musicians played their instruments, and people shouted: ‘Long live King Solomon!’ The ground literally shook because of the volume of noise, and the people at Adonijah’s feast could hear it. With David’s help, Solomon got to the top first. He was king of the castle. Imagine your heart being the castle. If you are like most, there is this constant race to the top, because the one at the top gets to be in control your life. The one at the top is supreme. The struggle is between our self and God. Solomon was, without a doubt, the right guy for the job. He was probably the greatest king that ever ruled anywhere. Blessing and prosperity covered all of Israel under his reign. It’s so important that the right one be king king of your life. If you want blessing and prosperity, let it be God. Let Him be King of your castle. See more
