WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY 20. of November 2020 On November 20th. children will reimagine a better world. What will you do?- UNICEF 2020 (unicef.org; Call for Action)... As we gather wearing blue on Friday, let’s remember that now more than ever it is crucial that all generations come together and take action and create a World we want to create for generations to come. We need to recognize that the COVID 19 crisis is a children’s rights crisis simultaneously. Let Friday and every day be a day of action. The View of The Child in Forest and Nature School: Everything I carry and know belongs to you, the children, the next generation: love, courage, knowledge, wisdom, truth, bravery, it is all yours. It is my responsibility to carry my bundle of knowledge, and share all I have with you with humility. Clarence Cachagee, Northern Cree Elder in conversation with the children at Emmanuel at Brighton Child Care Centre (2018). In Forest and Nature School we rely on the millennia old, sophisticated, land based knowledge and philosophy of Indigenous Nations from all around the Earth to reimagine the world with the leadership of future generations. As we see in the brave activism of Autumn Peltier, Fabio Gondim, Maria Cunha, Mala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, just to mention a few, children when given the opportunity are powerful World Leaders and Earth Guardians. Here are few ways you can take action: *Stand up for and demand equality, dignity and respect for all children regardless of ethnicity, ability, gender, race, or socio-economic status. *Take your child or children outdoors, listen, and observe. *Discover Nature following their lead, listen to what the children are observing, listen to their questions and interpretations. *Ask your governments to provide outdoor learning environments for your schools and child care centres. *Stand up for and learn about quality, research informed early childhood education, and protect quality education. *Help children know their rights (resources at unicef.org). *Learn about World Children’s Day (resources at unicef.org). *Encourage community leaders, businesses, and governments to support the plan to protect, empower and recognize children’s rights.

Woodside Natural Historic Site Learning With Love On Orange Shirt Day The Maygwayyawk children gathered around our campfire to discuss what Orange Shirt Day represented for them. The children inspired us by their previous knowledge and wisdom. The children discussed residential schools, and how sad it was that Indigenous Children couldn’t go home, that the children’s clothes were taken away, that they could not speak their language, and reflected on how they would feel under ...such circumstances. I am glad there are no more residential schools, I would not like to go there because I am Indigenous-one child shared. The group reflected on how adults should respect children, how all children should be safe, always with their family, and loved. We read books celebrating Indigenous families and followed the invitation in one of the books encouraging us to explore life’s sweet mysteries around us every day. The children shared their sweet mysteries of Mother Nature at Woodside: The swirling, falling leaves! The hawks we saw today! The colours of the leaves! Running with my friends! Kicking sticks with my friends! The birds! - the children shared. The children powerful as they are had a solution to making The World a Better Place: We need to respect each other and children. We need to always live with our families! We need to take care of each other! And of ourselves!- the reflections continued. The children opened their hearts with such enthusiasm to learn about each other, to change the world for the better, to protect each other. Perhaps we adults can learn from them and follow their lead. How could we learn more as a community about the history of Indigenous families and how can we ensure that we recognize the powerful knowledge of children? Please share your thoughts. ÉM

Children in contact with nature have a lower probability of catching an illness resulting from disorders in the immune system. Interesting read!

Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day, please share Phyllis's story with your family. She was the little girl who shared her story and encouraged us to open up our hearts and listen with love.

For how different the world feels to adults in these unprecedented times, it has been amazing to observe the small group of children who have joined us once again for the month of August. We have seen the same joy, laughter and discovery that children have been experiencing at Emmanuel at Brighton Child Care Centre for over fifty years. To new and returning families, we ask that you watch your email this weekend for a link to a video created for your child’s classroom. In th...e absence of visits to help acclimatize the transition, this is a way to have a visual for your child of what they can expect to see when they arrive. Welcome (back)! We can’t wait to play with you! https://youtu.be/leSor5BoS24

We are so grateful for this week of fine weather, and to once again hear joyous shouts and squeals of laughter emanating from our playgrounds. As we settle into the ‘new normal’ and all that comes along with it, we are also thankful for our roots in the Forest & Nature School philosophies that lead our practice. We are so very fortunate to be stewards of this space and the vast majority of our days are spent in our five natural play spaces; picnic lunch is the BEST lunch!... When we last left our home away from home (completely unaware of how long it would be until we were to return!), there was yet snow on the ground and the first plant life was just beginning to push up through the earth to say ‘hello!’ after it’s long winter nap. The children have enthusiastically jumped on the task of helping to dig out our overgrown secret gardens: pulling weeds, raking sandboxes and bagging yard waste to be composted. There is much to explore and rediscover! The finder of the largest root promptly declared, It’s rhubarb! and scampered off to cook up a feast for friends at the newly created restaurant in the sandbox where he discovered it. We paused to observe the creatures who make their home in this shared space (do you know what type of mantis this is?) and made forts from the overgrown tree limbs that had almost reached the ground. Amid newly formed friendships, we make space for those whose time at Emmanuel came to an unexpected end, as well as those whom have yet to return. We look forward to the days when other friends - old & new - will join us once again. Best wishes for a safe & healthy remainder of the summer to all of our E@B family. In every day, may you find a moment to see the world through the eyes of a child! We acknowledge that the land on which we gather today is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishnaabe and Neutral People. We acknowledge the enduring presence of the Indigenous people with whom we share this land, their achievements and their contributions to our community. We offer this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Canada.
