In a recent episode of CBC Tapestry with Mary Hynes, Jeff Braff (Emm 1T9, MPS) discusses his unique view of the pandemic as a hospital chaplain in Toronto. "Each night he's at St. Michael's Hospital, he visits the families of patients who want his comforting advice, partly guided by his Tibetan Buddhist training. But Braff is also a former infectious disease epidemiologist, who worked in public health in California. He's been able to look at the pandemic through both a spiri...tual and clinical lens." Emmanuel College faculty and staff continue to respond to ongoing events in the US, Canada and around the world, including the deaths of George Floyd and Regis Korchinski-Paquet. These responses are posted on our website: https://www.emmanuel.utoronto.ca//emmanuel-faculty-and-st/ (expand the "Statements, Responses, Reflections" panel for access).... Our most recent contribution is from Dr. Lim Swee Hong, Program Director, Master of Sacred Music at Emmanuel College, whose composition and musical reflection, "In Your Kingdom," is featured in this video: https://youtu.be/VzshWaDG6I4 Additional credit goes to Liya Dunlap (vocals, music arrangement), David Dunlap (bass), and Ching-Yu Huang & Jay Liang (video production). "How might we understand the kingdom of God that is frequently talked about by Jesus in the Scriptures? Admittedly, the Church also has its own understanding about this theological imagery. At times, it buys into an earthly expression of power and domination by conflating God’s realm with earthly dominion ideology in its colonial endeavours. In recent days, we are confronted by racial tensions with deadly consequences in our land where a dominant group subjugates the subaltern others. In my view, this is a time for us to heed what Jesus says about the kingdom of God where your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10, NRSV) What is God’s will for us at this time?" A poem for Thanksgiving... We Give Thanks to the Earth by Dolores La Chapelle... We give-away our thanks to the earth which gives us our home. We give-away our thanks to the rivers and lakes which give-away their water. We give-away our thanks to the trees which give-away fruit and nuts. We give-away our thanks to the wind which brings rain to water the plants. We give-away our thanks to the sun who gives-away warmth and light. All beings on earth: the trees, the animals, the wind and the rivers give-away to one another so all is in balance. We give-away our promise to begin to learn how to stay in balance with all the earth. From "Earth Prayers: From Around the Word, 365 Prayers, Poems, and Invocations for Honoring the Earth," edited by Elizabeth Roberts, HarperCollins Publishers, 1993. Please note that on Monday, October 12, there are no classes and Emmanuel College is closed.

"Protestant and Catholic Polemics in the Arab East, 1698-1798" by Professor Nabil Matar Registration: Register for this event: https://us02web.zoom.us//tZIvc-usrT8jEtMfuUR7at574ivzEWRWi... Abstract: The Protestant and the Catholic reformations resulted in devastating religious wars, followed by imperialist wars between Britain and France. In the Ottoman East of the eighteenth century, these wars were fought on paper and from pulpits and printing presses by local Catholic and Maronite clergy, by Protestant English residents, and by pamphleteers from Halle. This corpus of Arabic texts ranges from manuscripts of letters and polemics by local writers to print publications sent to the region from Halle, and shows the divisive impact and the cultural challenges of proselytization, at the same time that it reveals the institutionalization of the European missionary ‘project’ in a manner that was alien to the religious societies of the Ottoman regions. Nabil Matar is Professor of English, Presidential Professor in the President’s Interdisciplinary Initiative on Arts and Humanities, and Samuel Russell Chair in the Humanities at the University of Minnesota. He has published numerous books and articles on relations between early modern Britain, Western Europe, and the Islamic Mediterranean, and has two forthcoming books: Mediterranean Captivity through Arab Eyes, 1517- 1798 (Brill 2020) and Luther and the Papacy through Arab Eyes 1517-1798 (Palgrave 2022). Prof. Matar is also available for individual meetings with faculty and graduate students over Zoom. Those interested should contact Natalie Oeltjen at [email protected]

October 10, 2020 Happy 95th birthday to Principal Emeritus C. Douglas Jay! The Rev. Dr. Jay Vic 4T6, Emm 5T0, was the first director of the Toronto School of Theology50 years agoand an influential pioneer in interreligious dialogue. Notably, he served as the secretary of the 1966 Commission on World Mission and Evangelism of the United Church Canada and was the principal author of the policy that shaped the denomination’s approach to relations with other faiths. Both achie...vements drew upon what past Principal and Professor Emeritus Roger Hutchinson described as Jay’s ability to get beyond the fact of diversity and to create the conditions for meaningful encounters and co-operative action. Emmanuel College’s diverse programs today are the legacy of the foundational work of Douglas Jay and his United Church colleagues. We remember him fondly and wish him a very happy birthday. Details and registration: https://buff.ly/3crtWjl Thursday, October 1st, 12 p.m. 4 p.m. (ET) Friday, October 2nd, 12 p.m. 4 p.m. (ET)... This is the first Dialogues and Action in a series, which will focus on addressing equity, diversity and inclusion in Canadian higher education. The University of Toronto and Canadian universities and colleges across the country, are coming together to facilitate a national conversation to develop concrete actions for change in higher education and in our communities. This year’s Dialogues and Action will focus on sharing experiences and ideas, exploring and learning best practices, and contributing to the formulation and implementation of concrete actions that resolutely reject anti-Black racism and drive meaningful, enduring Black inclusion within individual universities and colleges; the higher education sector, in general; and our communities. Over the course of two days, participants will have the opportunity to choose from amongst 9 interactive online sessions. The concurrent sessions will explore the relevant issues, taking into account the diverse and intersecting identities within the Black community. The first day of the Dialogues and Action will focus on systemic anti-Black racism, key barriers to Black inclusion & approaches to identifying and responding to them, while the second day will focus on developing concrete actions and accountability mechanisms for structural and systemic change. The outcome of the deliberations will inform the creation of a charter of principles and commitments, which will support the implementation of the actions identified, and help to sustain an enduring culture against anti-Black racism and in support of Black inclusion. Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion Virtual Dialogue October 1 - 2, 2020 12 p.m. 4 p.m. (EST) Registration for this event is free https://buff.ly/3crtWjl If you are interested in participating, please complete your registration by Thursday, September 24, 2020 here: https://buff.ly/3crtWjl Each session is open to anyone and registrants are welcome to participate in any of the sessions based on interest, as sessions are not restricted based on audience (e.g. student, faculty, staff, alumni, community partner, non-Black peer etc.). The issues for discussion in each session impact more than one group/community. The various dialogues will be enriched by a multitude of perspectives.

It is difficult to be apart from one another. It is not what any of us hoped for or expected. And nevertheless, we gathered together virtually from different physical corners. We gathered together as Emmanuel but not at Emmanuel. And yet the spaces of Emmanuel remain in between us, in memory, in longing, in anticipation for our eventual return to campus. The 2020 Goldstein Lecture on Human Rights (Sept. 24) features Prof. Najeeba Syeed who will interrogate, and trouble, the idea that civility is the primary goal of interfaith action and dialogue. In her lecture she will offer examples of how religious leaders and communities have developed ritual protests as a form of contemporary sacred resistance to inhumane migration policies. WELCOME INCOMING STUDENTS! Today is DAY 1 of Emmanuel College's two-day orientation for incoming students via Zoom (our first-ever virtual orientation)! It is also the start of a two-day Scholar Strike for Black Lives in Canada https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/ a labour action/teach-in/social justice initiative responding to violence committed against Black, Indigenous and racialized people and communities. ... We have provided students with a schedule of teach-ins and transformative justice resources on our Quercus site: https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/quick-program-overview/ https://scholarstrikecanada.ca/resources/ Emmanuel College stands in solidarity with this action and is committed to the work of ending racism and institutional/systemic violence. This year's orientation has gone online, and is organized into various information modules on Quercus that can be reviewed at leisure and referred back to as students continue through the year. Modules include special topic live orientation sessions and workshops from various student groups and University of Toronto offices happening before and after our live Emmanuel Orientation sessions on September 9 and 10 via Zoom. Other features include video tours of the college https://www.youtube.com/playlist and grounding spiritual practices by Sam Cavanagh (Spiritual & Community Life Program Manager) and the spiritual life team, ending in a mini-retreat that includes an art project. Special thanks to Andrew Aitchison (Admissions Counsellor and Recruitment Coordinator) and the orientation organizing committee for putting these two days together! #ECOrientation2020 #ScholarStrikeCanada Victoria College in the University of Toronto University of Toronto Ecumenical Chaplaincy - ECUT University of Toronto Toronto School of Theology

In troubled times, people search for a life boat that shields from life’s uncertainties. Like Jesus, who walked across the dark waters of chaos to comfort the disciples, God fills us today with the Holy Spirit of Faith, Hope, and Love so that we, like Jesus, can reach out in confidence to a world that longs for the love of God. As a third year mature student preparing for a second career in ordained ministry, Emmanuel College MDiv student, Doug Ferris, enjoys opportunities ...to explore ministry through pulpit supply. The message from this online service speaks about how the ‘life boat’ of God’s love through Christ assures us of God’s presence in the midst of the storms of life. Calling all EC students and grads: we'd love to hear from you! What are you and your congregations/faith communities doing during these times? What does ministry/pastoral/chaplaincy work look like from your pulpit/mosque/temple? The choir loft? The 'pew'? The assembly hall? The community? PM us your videos... your stories... we'd love to celebrate and amplify them! https://www.youtube.com/watch #Mdiv #UCCan #Ministry #OnlineMinistry #HolySpirit #Faith Epsom-Utica United Church The United Church of Canada Toronto School of Theology Doug Ferris

Master of Pastoral Studies grad (Emm 2T0) Vicki Burns has made the grade (Canadian-style!): her name appears on Tim Hortons' Hero Cups, a limited-edition collection cup launched in June to honour and recognize frontliners, nominated by Canadians, for their dedication. Congratulations, Vicki! Vicki is working full-time at Toronto General Hospital now (post-residency), currently in the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In her own words, "As Covid cases peaked in the ICU, a...nd wearing scrubs became de rigueur, I found myself spending my days using our new-to-the-unit iPads to help loved ones and patients connect via video-calls (see blurry photo attached). My Tim’s cup nomination came courtesy of an especially appreciative family. As intense as it was, my feeling about it all was best summed up by one of our amazing nurses who quipped, No place I’d rather be in a pandemic!" #everdayheroes #Covid19 Tim Hortons University Health Network Toronto School of Theology Victoria College in the University of Toronto

Jeff Braff, who graduated from the Master of Pastoral Studies program in 2019, is featured in Broadview Magazine. Jeff "is a chaplain/spiritual care provider at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He’s also an ordained Buddhist monk and a retired infectious disease epidemiologist." When asked how being a monk guides his life, Jeff responded, "Living the dharma is basically what I try to do. I don’t know how successful I am, but I try to do it. Part of living the dharma is be...ing compassionate and having what’s called right work. And I figure this is right work, being a spiritual care provider, a chaplain to all people."
