A major new finding is how cortisol affects memory. A short burst of cortisol has been shown to help create a useful memory. Long-term exposure to cortisol in a stressful situation has been shown to be the cause of negative memories being trapped in our minds. There is also evidence that these trapped memories cause all other memories to be dulled, so that the mind can only focus on the negative, trapped memory.
