Shower pucks are small, puck-shaped fizzies that you can drop in the bottom of your shower. As they begin to fizz, the steam from your shower will smell like the scent of the shower puck. You can use this method to harvest the fragrance of many flowers that smell good. The flowers are first picked, then crushed, then soaked in oil (olive in this case, because it has a mild smell that is easily overpowered by that of the cherry blossoms). The oil then absorbs the fragrance of the flowers, so you'll be able to enjoy the sweet spring smell of cherry blossoms long after the blooms fade.

We had a pretty abundant cherry season, which meant all sorts of delicious stuff like cherry pies, cherry strudels, home made fruit roll-ups, and of course, bountiful frech cherries straight off the tree. This also means that the last batch of cherry Blossom bath bombs has been made, packaged, and labeled. Quantities are extremely limited, so come down to the Cochrane Farmers' Market, tomorrow from 9:30 to 1:30, and grab yours before cherry season ends for real.

This is a schubert chokecherry tree about halfway done blooming. These fragrant blossoms can be harvested and placed in a carrier oil, where it soaks up all the cherry blossom goodness. The next day, the old flowers are strained out of the oil, and new flowers are put in to take their place. This process is repeated until the oil has become as fragrant as the blossoms, and can be used for a variety of applications. So if April showers bring May flowers, then May flowers bring July bath bombs. Cherry blossoms may be fleeting, but storing their scent in a bath bomb is a good way to enjoy them long after they've faded.

It's been awhile since you've seen a post from EmpowerCare: Natural Health and Wellness. no, we didn't fall off the face of the Earth, we got accepted to the Cochrane Spring Farmers' Market. We've been stocking up on inventory like crazy, but even when things are super busy, sometimes you've just gotta go with it and enjoy a beautiful day of spring skiing in the mountains. Sometimes the best way to go really is the least difficult.

So it's all been said and done and the verdict was in early yesterday morning: The Groundhog did not see his shadow. Apparently, this means an early spring! Could've fooled us; right now it's a balmy and exceptionally spring-like -28 degrees C outside, with the temperature expected to plummet even lower--that's even too cold to ski! So when is this early spring going to come? Well, to be honest, we don't really know. If lemon balm could talk, this is what we think it would likely say: Hi, I'm a lemon balm (melissa officinalis). Not to be confused with lemongrass, which is a totally different plant whose essential oils are very commonly used in shampoos, deodorants and lotions. Melissa is the Greek word for bee, which is why I'm sometimes called bee balm. I'm a member of the mint family: if you see a plant growing in rich moist soil with square stems and opposite leaves that smells strong...ly of lemon, you've likely stumbled across me. I like to grow in moist, rich, well-drained soil that may be disturbed. I tend to grow in a clumping habit, which kind of makes me ideal for growing in pots--I won't necessarily take over your garden, but I also don't always respect boundaries well, and can invade other plants' spaces easily if I get too carried away. I'm a mint, so I like my water: If you're going to grow me in a pot, you'll get good results if you stick the pot in a tray and fill the tray with water, so it will wick up through the soil and my roots can drink it up from the bottom. Wait until the tray runs out of water, and then refill and repeat. Wicking situations work really well for me. Like most mints, I'm pretty hardy: most times I'm as resilient as I am arromatic. I tend to do best in USDA zones 4 through 9, but honestly you can grow me anywhere in pots if you overwinter me inside and stick me in a sheltered spot. I attract many beneficial insects, such as bees and lacewings, and my scent can confuse other creatures from snacking on nearby fruit and vegetable crops. I play nice with most things, especially cruciferous vegetables. In a forest landscape, I am part of the herbacious layer.. I like ample water, and good light. I'm good at bioaccumulating, especially phosphorus, so if you plant me under a fruit tree, every time you pick some of my leaves and mulch them, I will also act as a natural fertilizer. Speaking of my leaves, they actually have many uses: mosquitos and some other insects are repeled by them, so if you crumple them up and rub them on your skin, it may act as a natural and milder bug repellant (citronella is also one of my many names.). You can also use my leaves to make a calming, uplifting and deliciously refreshing lemony tea, fresh or dried.
