For all you DIY types! Here’s some framing projects you can do at home! However, here are some tips and tricks that will have your DIY gallery wall go from looking like an elementary school project to looking somewhat pro! 1. Flattening: unlike the article recommends, the best way to flatten is *not* in the frame, it’s under some weight, then loosely rolling it the opposite way for a short period of time. *See below for detailed instructions on flattening.... 2. The Mat: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! DON’T USE CRAFT PAPER!!!! Give us a call and have us cut you a real acid free mat to measure with beveled edges and everything from some of our leftovers for anywhere from $10-$25 or so! But if you’re set on doing it all yourself, at the very least, please use some sort of good quality acid free, very heavy card stock. Craft paper is full of acid and will fade terribly and discolor and damage your print. Once you’ve got a mat cut of good quality stock, by all means! Go nuts decorating. Drawing, ribbons, decoupage, unicorn hair! Whatever. Just make sure if you’re wrapping the mat in anything that may touch the print, place a 2nd acid free mat under the top decorative mat to protect the print. FLATTENING INSTRUCTIONS: -find 2 sheets of un-textured heavy stock. If you use something with any sort of texture, your print might pick it up. I use large sheets of acid free foam-core for this. -Place your rolled print between the sheets on a flat surface such as a table of floor and weight it down evenly. Covering the surface with books is great for this. Leave it be for a day or 2. -if your print is particularly stubborn, it may still curl unreasonably. In this case, find a wide poster tube. Place the poster between 2 sheets of acid free paper several inches larger than your print. Place the tube on top of the paper and begin to roll the whole sandwich gently around the tube (of course in the opposite way from the original) this usually doesn’t take very long. Check it in about 20min. Leave it longer if it’s still very curled or, if it’s now curling the opposite way repeat the process in the opposite way direction, only unroll it to check for flat after 30 seconds or so.
