Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be a debilitating, functional gastrointestinal disorder. It affects 13-20% of Canadians with a lifetime risk of developing it at 30% and it can develop at any age. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and/or diarrhea amongst other symptoms. Take the 30 second IBS test! 1) Have you had abdominal pain once a week for the last 3 months? 2) If yes, have you experienced at least 2 of the following; pain associated with bowel m...ovements? Pain associated with change in the frequency of bowel movements? Pain sometimes associated with constipation or diarrhea? If you answered yes, you may have IBS. Make an appointment with your primary care provider to confirm and manage symptoms. #IBSAwarenessMonth
We won’t have any in-office care hours tomorrow in observance of the holiday! Mobile and virtual appointments will be available Wednesday evening and Friday afternoon.
Diagnosis seems like the longest and most stressful part due to awaiting results of tests such as blood tests, stool tests, barium enema, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, cell and tissue studies, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and PET scans. Upon confirmation, there is a grading and staging process which provides direction into treatment options. Treatments are inclusive of different types of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and targeted therapies. Clinical trials are also available in Canada which look at new ways to prevent, find, and treat colorectal cancer. #ColorectalCancerMonth

During times of war, individual acts of heroism occur frequently; only a few are ever recorded and receive official recognition. By remembering all who have served, we recognize their willingly-endured hardships and fears, taken upon themselves so that we could live in peace. Poppies are worn as the symbol of remembrance, a reminder of the blood-red flower that still grows on the former battlefields of France and Belgium. During the terrible bloodshed of the second Battle of Ypres in the spring of 1915, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, wrote of these flowers which lived on among the graves of dead soldiers.
Happy Nurse Practitioner week to all of my colleagues! https://npao.org/wp-conte//2020/11/NPAO_2020_NP-WEEK_1.jpg

Possible symptoms include frequent urination especially at night, difficulty starting, holding back or weak flow of urine, painful urination, difficulty in having an erection, painful ejaculation, blood in urine or semen, and frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs. A PSA blood test can detect prostate cancer. If you have a family history or if you’re of African or Caribbean descent, make sure you get tested starting at age 45; otherwise age 50 is recommended. Avoid the red! When going out in public, it is as important as ever to take precautions and stay safe and healthy from #COVID19. We can do this by choosing low-...risk activities: - Order food in instead of eating out at a restaurant - Limit contact outside of your social bubble as much as possible - Choose low-contact sports (golf, tennis) instead of high-contact sports (football, basketball) Learn more here: http://ow.ly/S3qW50AZWSv

Mask power! In light of the fact that the local health unit has made masks mandatory in indoor public spaces, I thought I would share some tips. Physical distancing is the number one way to prevent contracting COVID-19. Masks can also be helpful, particularly when one cannot physical distance, but there are key components to wearing a mask safely. 1. The fit is the key. Place it on your face, adjusting it to feel comfortable when still in your vehicle. It must be worn o...ver BOTH your nose and mouth. 2. In a public place, do NOT touch the mask with your hands or you have essentially wasted the safety factor. 3. Remove the mask in your vehicle or your home by touching the strings/elastics on the side. Wash or sanitize your hands. 4. Wash the masks frequently if made from cloth. 5. Most of all, be "kind to one another," to quote Dr. Bonnie Henry See more

In light of COVID-19, nurses among other essential workers are being viewed as heroes. In honour of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth (a leader ahead of her time), the WHO designated 2020 as the year of the nurse and midwife. The Canadian Nurses Association's theme is "Nurses, A Voice to Lead: Nursing the World to Health", while the Ontario Nurses Association's theme is "Our Calling: Care, Compassion, Comfort". All of these themes are seem so fitting giv...en the current circumstances. It's very interesting and exciting to see that during a global pandemic, nurses are such a large focus and garnering much needed recognition. As nurses, we do have a calling. We do lead. I don't think any one of us would walk away during this crisis. We typically don't view ourselves as heroes. We are nurses and proud to be. To all of my fellow NPs, RNs, and RPNs - HAPPY NURSING WEEK 2020!
Did you know that Canadians typically say "I'm fine" when asked by others? We're excellent at putting off our real feelings and needs for connection. Typically, people don't want to discuss their mental health status as it may be perceived as "weird" or "imperfect." COVID-19 has further challenged our engagement with others. At the same time it has allowed us to reflect on our lives, which can have positive and negative outcomes. This Mental Health Week, let's remember to be real about ourselves! If you need support, an excellent online resource is the Canadian Mental Health Association. Our city also has many options for counselling and there are crisis lines available at 807-346-8282, 1-833-456-4566 or www.crisisservicescanada.ca.
Nurse Practitioner positions are generally funded by the government in the form of a family health team or nurse practitioner led clinic. However, the government has a limited number of these positions available. Physicians may pay for an NP from their own wages under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), but NPs are unable to bill OHIP themselves. Given the lack of healthcare providers in Northwestern Ontario, we wanted to offer an alternative with fast, accessible care. Check with your benefits provider - our services might be covered!
One of the most common questions we are asked is "What exactly is a Nurse Practitioner?" Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are individuals who have completed a degree program, have had experience as a registered nurse and have taken additional education in the form of a masters and/or certificate program. Nurses are trained from day one to view the patient as a whole versus a disease process, and an NP can provide similar care to that of a doctor. You can learn more on our website here: https://www.encompasshealthcare.ca/about/#about-np
