We’ve had to learn to use our time very differently over the last year. It has probably been harder for some than others to adapt to way more home time and a LOT less social time. Are we working to be intentional with that time? Along with spending a lot more time with those in our household comes the opportunity to use our words wisely as well. Are we encouraging each other? In times of frustration, maybe not even with each other, are we taking care that the words coming ou...t of our mouths are not words that we will regret? Eric has shared a few special teacher memories over the past week, and today his lovely wife, Carol, shares an incredibly impacting memory. Warning, this is a tear-jerker! "I had a great teacher in grade 10. His name was Mr. Holmes. I did really well in his class. It was a humanities class, I cannot remember the name of the class. In grade 12, when I was really struggling in math, he came to me and said he had seen one of my math tests (though he was not my math teacher) and ...was surprised at the mark because I had done so well in his class in grade 10. I told him math was not my subject and I had a hard time making sense of it. He offered to help me even though he was not my math teacher and, of course, I said yes. I then found out that he had been fighting a serious illness for years and he was only teaching half days at the time. The time that worked for him to help me was actually when he was at the hospital getting IV treatments for his illness. So for a few Saturdays, I brought my math stuff to Bethesda hospital, and as he was getting IV treatment, he helped me with my math. WOW! I ended up passing math and being able to graduate. Now 20 years later, I still get tears thinking about this teacher who cared enough to help me. I only saw him once after graduation, but what an impact he has left. Thank you Mr. Holmes!" The heart of a teacher is a beautiful thing to behold through their actions towards the young people in their sphere of influence! Keep sharing these stories, Friends! Did you know that when Jesus was asked which commandment is the most important of all, his reply was to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31) The most important thing that we can do as human beings is to love. It's not just a nice thing to do, it's actually what we are created for. Th...ese two commandments sum up our purpose. And, whatever your stance in regards to Jesus and His truth, I'm sure you can agree that if we all loved our neighbor as we instinctively love ourselves, the world would be a different place. One filled with far less division, less conflict, less violence. Love changes things. Always. It inspires hope. It fuels us. Eden is the youngest of the bunch, but her youth certainly doesn't hinder her ability to love her neig...hbours! This young lady is filled with a joyful energy that fuels her as she naturally pours out love on all those around her, including her 5 brothers! Loving her neighbours is an action that she lives out well! One example of this being block parties planned by her & her brothers (complete with entertainment choreographed & performed by them) to connect with those that live in the homes around them! To love your neighbours is to bring together all the keys of creating intentional community. You can love your neighbours by bringing joy, eating together, encouraging them, and serving them. Love is an action and the ways we can act out love are so numerous that it shouldn't be very hard to flood our communities with it! Hi, Im Keagan and Im 15 years old. To serve others is critical in building community. When you serve others you are showing them kindness and respect. You are growing relationships and thats what community is all about. Here are a few seconds to think about who you can serve today. Meet the big-hearted Keagan, who happens to be next in our young radio celebrity list! Hopefully, you have had a chance to hear him on our local radio stations sharing why serving others is so... important! If you know Keagan, he has most likely served you in some way. He wears his heart on his sleeve and goes out of his way to greet and connect with those he comes in contact with. He is a neighbour helper! From mowing grass, picking rocks from a newly formed garden patch, helping clean out ditches ... he sees a need and provides a helping hand. There are many ways that we can serve those around us. Perhaps your neighbour has to isolate, you could deliver groceries. You can even serve in an official capacity by volunteering at a local soup kitchen or food bank. Serving someone is a wonderful way of humbly showing them they are valued and worthy of kindness & respect... even if it is someone that doesnt act like it.
