We love to see our spaces in use! The University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, boasts a beautiful 1000-acre campus full of greenspace, trees, meandering pathways and multiple elevation changes. We designed a wayfinding program that nestles harmoniously into the park-like environment while making the campus easier to navigate with a consistent, easy-to-recognize information hierarchy and family of signtypes. #Entrospective: We asked Entro Partner // SEGD Board President, Anna Crider, to share the top 3 things currently inspiring her work. 1. Long Walks: I’ve always believed that inspiration is found when we aren’t searching for it. While the absence of commuting this year has had its benefits, that lack of moving through the city has lessened my chances for those unexpected moments of inspiration. I love the happenstance of seeing something completely unrelated to a project and h...aving that a-ha moment you didn’t even realize you were seeking. So instead of my commute, I take long walks when I can enjoying my city and finding inspiration around unexpected corners. (Photo: Anna Crider, Brooklyn) 2. My Community: Staying connected to the experiential graphic design community through my role as SEGD Board President has allowed me to continue to be inspired by my peers. While we can’t all be together, it is amazing to see presenters from across the globe virtually sharing their experiences as we all navigate this evolving time. (Repost: SEGD XLAB) 3. My City: I could spend days reading about the history of New York. I love exploring new areas and then researching everything that has been written about it. History books, online blogs and podcasts, anything I can get my hands on to learn more about a topic or area. This love of research has impacted my projects, too. I find it fascinating that we can suddenly become experts on a previously unknown topic when we embed ourselves’ into the analysis and creative process of a specific project. #Entrospective: We asked Entro Designer, Shehrbano Akhtar, to share the top 3 things currently inspiring her thinking about design. 1) Getting Some Fresh Air. I find myself most inspired when surrounded by nature. When in need of a mental break, I tend to find myself exploring parks, trails, or going on a short walk etc. This is when I am able to process information and come up with new ideas. I believe that it is very important for a designer to be surrounded by an environm...ent that moves them, and for me that is nature. (Image: unsplash / Lukasz Szmigiel) 2) Talking it Out. Communicating with designers, chatting about projects that I am working on; challenging aspects, brainstorming ideas and discussing inspirations. I am often inspired by chatting with my peers which in turn helps me think things out and approach tasks from a new angle. (Image: unsplash / Scott Graham) 3) Collecting Inspirations. I like to collect things I have read, seen, and find interesting or inspiring. Bookmarking websites to refer back to, pinning images to a Pinterest board, following designers on creative outlets, and pulling out pages from magazines. Collecting images and designs often times becomes a source for projects. In honor #WorldArchitectureDay, Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) with support from The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada released the #BringBackMainStreet Playbook! Our submission, QR Comeback, demonstrates a responsible design solution for Canadian Main Streets that can be implemented during the recovery and post-pandemic. This environmental graphic design solution reinvigorates main street image while providing access to pl...ace specific content & services. Content is accessible on a mobile phone or device which uses QR code scanning technology as a way to link to information in a safe and contactless way. QR codes are embedded in graphics and/or artwork inspired by the character of the main street or community and applied onto existing amenities or infrastructure. The content, accessed by QR code, could include information about the shops and people that make up the neighborhood. Facts and history of place can be revealed, local businesses could offer promotions, cultural content could be included, or the BIA could organize activities such as scavenger hunts based on retrieving information from the various QR code links. The possibilities are endless. By building on the identity of a place and introducing graphics elements that attract attention and invite engagement, this concept would help to bring visitors back to their main streets. Visitors benefit from additional value, entertainment and memories, while the local community reconnects with its patrons. #Entrospective: We asked Entro Designer, Lauren Kuzyk, to share the top 3 things currently inspiring her thinking about design. 1. Social Consciousness: In recent months educating myself about social issues has become an increasingly important and inspiring part of my design process. Often times this means immersing myself in topics beyond my immediate purview into uncomfortable realities of marginalized groups. I’ve gained that the everyday experience is not the same for ev...eryone and that as designers we cannot just be inspired by the experiences of other cultures without recognizing the adversity they face too. By learning about the struggles of others I am motivated to recognize the privilege and impact I have as an environmental designer within a predominantly White field, and am inspired to exercise empathy and prioritize inclusivity of people of color in my work.(Image: EPA) 2. People Watching: In New York City I indulge in people watching. In a pre-pandemic world, I would spend most weekends exploring a new borough and watching the people in it. I am fascinated by what a versatile visual communication device the human body can be. (Image: Luke Cooley) 3. Drawing: When I draw, I am able to disconnect for a moment and focus on the subject I’m studying. I typically draw something complex yet familiar so that I can challenge myself to replace pre-existing suppositions I have, with realistic images. The strength of any transit system is not only in its ability to provide services efficiently, but also in ensuring that riders can clearly understand what services are available, and how they can be accessed. We worked with OC Transpo to make this a reality through branding initiatives and a reorganization of their service hierarchy and communications platform. We were originally introduced to the project to develop a more efficient navigation and signage program to better ...communicate the multiple services of OC Transpo, especially in preparation for Ottawas new light rail services being introduced in 2018. Through a study and assessment of OC Transpos current brands, trips, route structure and signage program we created a strategy to provide the experience of one seamless journey for riders. Imperative to this is cohesive communications, which require simplification of the multiple identities in the existing brand architecture.

This has allowed me to be a more empathic designer while embracing that unknown feeling of being outside my comfort zone. #designthinking #designinspo #design #experientialdesign #industrialdesign #graphicdesign #officelife #designer

Happy Canada Day! Were taking a moment to reflect on Canadas Centennial logo design by Gottschalk+Ash Toronto (now Entro) co-founder Stuart Ash. The symbol was etched into any new constructions during the year of 1967 (including sidewalks) and serves as a constant reminder of our diverse, unified Canadian identity. The stylized maple leaf is constructed from 11 equilateral triangles representing our provinces and territories at the time ten provinces plus the North. It al...so marked the first time the maple leaf had been officially chosen to represent the country. Entro acquired Gottschalk+Ash Toronto in 2011. While cities are beginning to open back up, our museums and cultural destinations remain closed. Despite these tough times, they continue to innovate and offer access to beautiful work and much needed inspiration. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is offering an innovative online program for all to experience art at home. Entro designed the signage and wayfinding program for The Mets renovated plaza, which recognizes precedence of the surrounding architecture t...hrough the use of simple forms, and compatible colours and materials. Overall, the wayfinding program has received high praise because it blends into the the architectural and newly landscaped environment, as though it had always been a part of the original building. #Entrospective: We asked Entro Designer, James Smirlies, to share the top 3 things currently inspiring his thinking about design. 1) Games challenge me to think outside the box of real-life restrictions and push me to think of creative possibilities. Whether its a chess or video game, I enjoy getting lost in the challenge. (Image: The Witness) 2) Walking my dog is the best escape from all distractions and is the time of day where I am able to help provide clarity to my creat...ive thinking. 3) My peers inspire me on a daily basis. Im learning to be a better designer everyday and I hope to be as experienced and as knowledgeable as them. Sometimes when met with an obstacle on a project, taking a step back to talk to another designer to bounce ideas is the best way to challenge the thinking process and to keep moving forward. The event starts in one hour! Join us at 12:00 EST as we host a one hour panel, Passenger Experience After A Global Pandemic, with key industry leaders. This thought-provoking conversation will encompass the ways that airports, airport environments, and wayfinding will need to respond to the upcoming phases of our world returning to travel. As we start to hear the promise of plans for loosening COVID-19 restrictions, a lot of us wonder about one area in particular trave...l. Specifically, we wonder how the airport experience we know today will be much different as we move through these changes: How will we maintain social distance? Will there be screenings for the virus and how will they be conducted? How will airports handle travellers from different countries with varied policies? Project Feature: YWCA Canada is our countrys largest and leading voice for women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender diverse people. With member associations in 32 locations across Canada, they tirelessly work to end violence against women and girls, implement national childcare, achieve economic equality, and end homelessness for women and girls. On the year of YWCA Canadas 150th anniversary, we evolved their brand so that it would encapsulate the impact of their work over many... years, set the tone for their future advocacy and connect people to their work beyond program information and metrics. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, immense pressures have been put on YWCA Canada and their member associations. Since February 2020, local YWCAs have stepped up with rapid response for Canadians, without any additional resources, and they urgently need support to continue to serve those communities hit the hardest.
