"We all need to be asking ourselves what a responsible transition looks like for the sake of the planet, but also for the sake of Albertans. The sooner Alberta’s politicians accept this, the more likely they’ll be able to help light the way forward for their beautiful, embattled province and its people."

Thanks to Amy Snider and our friends @skenvsociety for this insightful letter to the editor in the November 5,2020 Lesderpost. Cheryl Stadnichuk Ward 1 completed our Renewable City survey, saying : There are many issues facing Regina -- such as the infrastructure deficit, protecting Wascana Park from commercial development, preserving heritage properties, addressing homelessness, ensuring fair taxation and water rates -- but I see the commitment to make Regina a renewable city a high priority. Climate change and global warming will have devastating impact on our planet and we need to act now. If we do not act now to reduce our carbon emissions, it will be too late in the future to make the necessary changes. We agree! We are non-partisan, and want to see the #climatechangeawareness increased during #skvotes2020 . We want to have the hard, but necessary conversations with the people that want to represent us #canyouhearus ? We want science-based resilience and true renewable commitments for a stronger, more progressive SK. This election hinges on what we do, or don’do, in this big, beautiful, sunny, windy place we call home. Time to roll up our sleeves. Our youth who can’t vote are depending on us. Workers need a #justtransition. We need #climateactionnow and people who understand that in charge. #ivoteforclimateaction #tellmeaboutyourplan #weneedtodobetter #inthistogether #skpoli

UPDATE: After posting our report on where candidates stand on Regina's Renewable City motion, we received several more responses. We have updated the document a...nd posting the new version. We will continue to update as responses come in. --------------------------------- In advance of the Nov 9 city election, the Envirocollective sent out a three-question survey to all the candidates for council. The questions dealt with Regina's Renewable City commitment. The results are now available as a handy pdf including all the responses we've received. Of the nine people running for mayor, we received four responses for a 44 percent response rate. Of the 45 people running for council, we received 24 responses for a 53 percent response rate. Overall, that's a 52 percent response. Which, considering the importance of climate action and impact that the Renewable City framework will have on future councils is a fairly disappointing result. Jim Elliott mayoral candidate in the November 9th municipal election has a plan for a #renewableregina . He was the first candidate to answer our election survey: This environmental plan would place a higher priority on both cleaning up our environment but also reviewing what currently is done going into the future. This will reduce the human health impacts of our city and enhance our sustainability and resiliency when dealing with the adverse changes associated with clima...te change. Here is a sample of whathis Environmental Plan for Regina includes: "1. Parks and Open Spaces All parks, open spaces and other city land will not have pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers put on these lands. Extraordinary cases will be reviewed such that these will be lessened and alternatives will be employed. Rationale: Many residents who are chemically sensitive are not able to utilize their neighbourhood parks because of their adverse reaction to the chemicals used. Many of the herbicides are for cosmetic reasons and the weeds can readily be managed with other methods. Action: City Administration will be asked to phase out the use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers while utilizing alternatives. Where alternatives are not currently available, reducing the number of uses will be advised. City administration will provide an active plan to eliminate noxious weeds in the city, especially purple loosestrife and leafy spurge. 2. Environmental Oversight An environmental advisory committee will be re-instated utilizing experts and citizens providing active and pro-active advice around the environmental state of the city. Rationale: Advice on the operations of the city is necessary so as to maintain due diligence about problems associated with activities in Regina. Likewise, there needs to be an independence of process so that there can be investigations of concerns from the public. Action: A revised environmental advisory committee will be re-instated giving it powers to investigate and review the practices of the city and concerns expressed from the public. Once established, a public call out would be initiated to find members of the committee.

EnviroCollective founder Shanon Zachidniak has a background in community engagement and food security. She was the Business Manager for Wascana Solar Coop before the province ended the net-metering program. She sees #climateaction as an economic opportunity if we transition to a more sustainable lifestyle justly and equitably. As your candidate for Ward 8, she says: "I'm running for public office for our children's future. The Renewable Regina motion of October 2018 caused a... standing ovation when unanimously passed. But there has not been much progress in the last 2 years. With a Masters in Environmental Studies, I fully understand the reality of what we are facing. Effective Climate Action policy starts at the municipal level, and I'm looking forward to using my education and experience to help our city reach or surpass our targets." We have the best Board Members! Many thanks to Amy for this fun, creative, and cool idea!

EnviroCollective 02.08.2020

Ward 8 candidate @shanonzachidniak knows that many of the decisions that most impact our daily lives are made at the local-level and we need a sustainability lens to guide all of our major decisions. The science is clear ...We need to invest in renewable energy and drastically reduce our emissions. If we do this with an equity lens, we can also ensure that we are taking care of the workers in the non- renewable sector as well as our most vulnerable community members as we invest in creating a renewable city. We couldn’t agree more! #ivoteforclimateaction #talktomeaboutyourplan #yqrcc

EnviroCollective signed on to become the Community Climate Hub for Regina and the surrounding area this spring. Here's the latest news from the National Climate League: https://www.tiktok.com/@climatereali//6879147099494092033 "For those that need a quick refresher on the National Climate League, the NCL is an exercise in participative democracy. It’s a data collection project powered and spearheaded by citizen-led Community Climate Hubs, culminating in the publication of ...the National Climate League Standings in February each year. The NCL standings highlight local solutions that improve the lives of everyday Canadians while setting Canadian municipalities on the fast track to carbon neutrality. 15 primary and 15 complimentary indicators in terms of living a healthier and more sustainable life. At citizens’ request, councilors mandate city staff to submit data for each indicator. For example, when submitting data for the sustainable buildings indicator, we want data for the number of buildings that are certified LEED platinum, living, or passive. The standings also function as a friendly contest, outlining which Canadian municipality is taking the lead in each indicator! Last year, Calgary lead in our bike lane indictor, meaningful that they had the largest total kilometres of bicycle lanes and paths than any of the other participating cities." The "I VOTE FOR CLIMATE ACTION" signs we are selling right now for #SKVotes2020 are the original idea of the Calgary Community Climate Hub! Get yours here: https://donorbox.org/enviro-signs

@shobnaradons has a background in labour. She knows that #climateaction needs to be a just transition that allows for security, retraining, and living wage jobs to help our city not only keep, but improve upon services while helping #RenewableRegina . As your candidate for Ward 7, she says: "Sustainable and Renewable Communities will help build a world for future generations" We agree! #yqrcc #yqr Get your own reusable, non-partisan sign: https://donorbox.org/enviro-signs #skpoli

Bob Hawkins, Regina Ward 2 City Councillor since 2012, says: If re-elected, I will continue to push to make Regina a renewable city. I have fought hard to support and strengthen Council’s Renewable Regina 2050 commitment. I amended that motion to ask City Administration to bring forward four specific and concrete projects within the next three years. Our commitment must be more than just aspirational, it must be a commitment to immediate action. ... Earlier this year, I introduced a successful motion to ban single-use plastic shopping bags in Regina once the pandemic is over. I am enrolled in a course by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities educating elected officials on how best to advance environmental initiatives. With the input of citizens and groups like EnviroCollective, the next Council can make real strides towards a fair, sustainable future for all Regina residents. I need your support to continue this work." Thanks, Councillor! Get your own reusable sign here: https://donorbox.org/enviro-signs #ivoteforclimateaction #talktomeaboutyourplan #yqrcc

EnviroCollective is a non-partisan organization. We do appreciate candidates that understand Climate Action is the issue that must be addressed the SKVotes2020 at all levels of government. Many thanks to @cherylstadnichuk for being supportive of our awareness campaign. I will continue to do my small part for the environment but we won’t have success tackling climate change unless governments take bold collective action. Polls will be closing soon, Saskatchewan. We hope voter turnout was high given how serious the stakes. We thank everyone who has supported our sign campaign and who voted for #climateaction We look forward to working with the returning and newly elected MLA’s to help Saskatchewan meet the necessary emission targets, to encourage more sustainable choices for our energy needs, to provide training and supports for workers as we transition to renewable energy, and to put an end to the environmental degradation, habitat loss, and water management issues we hear about from across the province. #ivoteforclimateaction #talktomeaboutyoutplan #skpoli
