Toxic heavy metals are difficult for the body to dispose of and tend to accumulate in the tissues leading to numerous health problems including autoimmunity, chronic fatigue, cancer, neurological diseases and developmental problems in children. Chlorella boasts fibrous, tough cell walls that have a binding effect on these toxins. It can help the body to detox by removing toxic heavy metal loads through a process called chelation. The cell wall of chlorella acts similarly t...o an ion exchange resin, soaking up large amounts of mercury and other heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and arsenic assisting in its elimination from within the gastrointestinal tract and the gut wall. As the gut wall is slowly cleared, metals stored in other compartments of the body will gradually move via osmosis to the gut wall where further clearing can take place. It is chlorella’s extremely high chlorophyll content that makes it the number one choice for detox. Chlorophyll is especially effective at protecting our liver and cleansing our blood. In turn, clean blood ensures that metabolic waste is removed and carried away from our bodily tissue. Dosage (as part of Enviromed's mercury removal program): - Start by taking teaspoon (or 1-2 500mg tablets) the first day with a meal. Slowly increase your dose to 1 -2 teaspoons 2x/day (or eight-ten 500mg tablets 2x/day) with food. - On the 10th day take a large dose (2 to 2 teaspoons 3x/day, or 10-12 (500mg) tablets) 3x/day (with meals). - Stop taking chlorella for 2-3 days and then start over again by taking teaspoon with each meal again. Because chlorella is considered a food, it is considered very safe to take at such high dosages, but you should still give your system the time to get used to it slowly. CAUTION: If at any time you develop nausea or start "burping up" the chlorella taste often, you should stop taking it for a few days as a food sensitivity may be developing, which may worsen if you continue taking it. Once a few days have passed, re-start taking it at a low dose again and increase slowly. Some sensitive individuals experience a stronger reaction due to excessive mercury mobilization. This may include symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, headache, or a flu-like sensation. If this occurs, stop taking the chlorella and take a week break. The symptoms should pass shortly after you discontinue the chlorella. After the week, start again at a lower dose or contact your naturopathic doctor to get new instructions regarding your dosage.

With the growing concern of mercury in our seas and oceans, we all need to be more conscientious of what and how much seafood we eat. Below are two tables illustrating mercury levels in each type of fish (in parts per million = ppm) as well as a table with recommended number of fish meals per month depending on its mercury content. Please note that in table 3 the total consumption of fish per month is based on the maximum allowable mercury in the diet. For example, if you have eaten all of 16 meals per month of seafood within the > 0.03-0.06 range, it is not recommended that you eat any other fish or seafood regardless of how low their mercury content may be.
