Continuing the celebration of Invasive Species Awareness Week Here is a "family" of the invasive spiny waterflea (Bythotrephes cederstroemi) observed under different light filters (Darkfield, Brightfield, and Oblique), four adults and one juvenile. This powerful predator has a very detrimental impact on aquatic ecosystems. It was introduced to North America many years ago, and it is currently found in many water bodies in Ontario, and Manitoba. It can be easily spread by boa...ts or other aquatic recreational or fishing activities or equipment used, as well as by natural pathways. Here we can see a gamogenetic female carrying resting eggs, and a parthenogenetic female carrying embryos. The tail has claws that facilitate their attachment to different materials and surfaces which may help them to be easily transported, and invade new water bodies. #enviroresponsible #aquaticinvasivespecies #zebramussel #quaggamussels #invspwk #mnrf #invasivespeciescentre #invasivespeciescouncil #olympusmicroscope #fishing #boats #boatwashing #fishinggear #lakes #rivers #kingstonontario #ontariocanada #plankton #zooplankton

DYK? Diseases spread in forests too. Our forest researchers study the spread of native and invasive (non-native) diseases to better understand how it happens an...d how to minimize damage to trees and forests. Two of the diseases we are working on are invasive ones that affect beech trees. Beech nuts are an important source of food for wildlife. Tree diseases are spread by wind, water, birds, insects, and you guessed it people. You can help prevent disease spread in forests by: not moving firewood cleaning footwear, clothing, vehicles, and watercraft before and after outdoor activities For more about diseases that affect our forests, visit https://www.ontario.ca//forest-health-pests-diseases-and-s. #MNRFScience See more

Most aquarium pets are not native to Ontario. Improper disposal of these animals can lead to the establishment of non-native populations in our waterways, threa...tening our native species and biodiversity. Goldfish are commonly thought to be the first foreign fish species introduced to North American waters, likely through the pet trade, and have since invaded many lakes and rivers in the province.
