Our next Council meeting is Monday at 7pm. There are two COVID-related motions on the agenda, as well as a presentation by Dr. Paul. Please see the end of this ...post for exact motions.*** The first motion addresses businesses only being allowed to sell essential goods and services. Currently: Businesses that sell essential goods and services are also allowed to sell non essentials. Businesses that do not sell essentials, are not allowed to be open to customers. (Note: many stores that are closed to customers are still able to sell to customers by curbside and/or delivery.) This motion states: Businesses that sell essential goods and services would only be allowed to sell the essentials. Non-essential areas would potentially be closed and non-essential goods and services would definitely not be sold. The intent behind this motion is to treat all businesses fairly, especially small businesses. Additionally, this change could reduce people in stores that are still open. If businesses can only sell essentials, people wouldn’t go in for non essentials; which would hopefully decrease the number of visits and the number of people in stores. Québec has done something to this effect. This is a provincial decision, but our motion could be sent to the province to add our voices to others who have raised this concern. The second motion is a request for contact tracing data from the EOHU. There has been a call for this data to indicate where transmissions are occurring. This data would empower us to better understand where people are contracting COVID-19 and could be used in two ways. First, when looking industry by industry what should be closed and what should be open, this decision could be informed by the actual local industry by industry transmission numbers. Secondly, if individuals are armed with the knowledge of where COVID transmissions are statistically occurring, they can then make informed and ideally more diligent decisions. Above all else, wearing a mask, washing our hands, socially distancing and not gathering with people outside our households is still the expectation. This data would be IN ADDITION to these efforts. In this region, are transmissions happening at stores? In workplaces? In our homes? These are important details that inform our decisions and are IN ADDITION to wearing masks, washing our hands, socially distancing and not gathering with people outside our households. As case numbers soar, it has become incredibly important for us to double down on our efforts. Contact tracing data would inform us about where transmissions are occurring and empower us to make better, more informed and effective decisions. ***New Business Motion 3: Pandemic Lockdown, 2021-03-Council Members Whereas the City of Cornwall is currently in a Provincially mandated lockdown; and Whereas the City of Cornwall supports and encourages businesses to operate to the fullest extent allowed by emergency orders; and Whereas the City of Cornwall wants the directives to be applied fairly to all companies regardless of what they sell. Now therefore be it resolved that the City of Cornwall request the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and the Province of Ontario to enforce businesses, that are allowed to be open for in-store purchases, only be allowed to sell goods or services deemed essential to in-store customers. ***New Business Motion 4: Detailed COVID-19 Reports, 2021-04-Council Members Whereas the City of Cornwall is currently in a Provincially mandated lockdown; and Whereas small businesses have been forced to shutdown due to these measures; and Whereas we do not have any data to suggest small businesses are causing the spread of COVID-19; and Whereas the EOHU does contact tracing for COVID 19 cases in our region. Therefore be it resolved that the City of Cornwall request the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to release data on cases by industry sector such as retail stores, restaurants, fitness centers, recreational facilities, barbers and hair salons, small businesses, schools, health care, distribution centers and manufacturing, public sector, grocery stores among others. http://bit.ly/2PsohzZ

It’s important to acknowledge the extent of the current challenge parents and kids are facing in schools. Recognize the many ways that things will be different... this year for all of us: students, teachers, families, and communities. Being realistic about what’s possible will allow us to adjust our expectations accordingly, as opposed to setting our selves and our kids up for frustration and disappointment. And that starts with acknowledging the fact that everyone will be carrying an extra-heavy load this yearand recognizing that it will be more important than ever to be patient with and kind to one another. Read more about Acknowledging the Challenge in our Back-to-School Kit, special section on Navigating School. https://cmho.org/acknowledging-the-challenge-2/ #kidsmentalhealth #kidscantwait #mentalhealthawareness #backtoschool
