As part of a Grief & Bereavement support group I have been co-facilitating I often include meditations/ inspiration from Alan D. Wolfelt, Grief One Day at a Time. Each day has a quote, a statement and an affirmation. The following is from April 7th which was the final day of a 10 week group: "Not all those who wander are lost." - J.R. Tolkien We are wandering in our grief. We are going this way and that, sometimes forward, sometimes backward, sometimes in circles or zigzags.... In our wandering, we can feel aimless, even hopeless. We can feel disorganized and disoriented. We can feel lost. Grief is indeed a meandering journey - one with no road map. When we are feeling lost we can remember: We may be meandering, but we are not lost. We are doing what we need to do. When we learn to trust that the wandering will eventually get us where we need to go, it gets easier ... and hope reignites. Affirmation: Grief is all about the journey. I may be wandering but I am not lost.

Advance Care Planning (ACP) Day is April 16th. Advance Care Planning is the process of thinking & talking about your wishes, values & preferences for your future care in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. Decide who would speak for you - choose your Substitute Decision Maker (SDM) On this day Canadians are encouraged to set aside time between 6-8:00 p.m. to talk openly with family, friends & loved ones. Tell them what would be most important to you in a health c...are emergency. Tell them what brings you joy. Above all, tell them about your values & wishes. SpeakUP Canada According to Shayna Beeksma of Beeksma Law Your legal documents include your Will and Power of Attorney for Property and Personal Care. Your ACP can be included with your Power of Attorney for Personal Care or it can be a stand-alone document. It is not a legal document and no one can be forced to act in accordance with it, however it can help your Substitute Decision Maker (SDM) feel confident in the fulfillment of your wishes. Death Doulas often support & guide people in the completion of their Advance Care Plan encouraging reflection & discovery of self around end of life. Both SpeakupOntario and DyingwithDignityCanada have excellent templates to create your Advance Care Plan. www.speakupontario.ca www.dyingwithdignity.ca

"The work of the mature person is to carry grief in one hand and gratitude in the other and to be stretched large by them. How much sorrow can I hold? That’s ho...w much gratitude I can give. If I carry only grief, I’ll bend toward cynicism and despair. If I have only gratitude, I’ll become saccharine and won’t develop much compassion for other people’s suffering. Grief keeps the heart fluid and soft, which helps make compassion possible." ~ Francis Weller art credit--C Lynn Reese See more
