Another bike returned!!!#Repost @edmontonpoliceservice with @make_repost On April 5th, Downtown Division officers were conducting proactive enforcement when they observed a male riding a bicycle along the sidewalk. Officers stopped the rider for the bylaw infraction and asked the male about the bike; he said he bought it from a friend for $40, and then altered his story and stated he found it in an alleyway. With the change in story, officers searched the bike on Bike Ind...ex and it came up as stolen earlier that same day! The male was arrested for possession of stolen property and the bike was returned to its owner all within 12 hours of the bike being stolen. Give your bike the same added security and automatic proof of ownership by registering it for free on www.bikeindex.org.

On April 5th at approximately 10pm DDIV officers were conducting proactive patrols in the Coliseum LRT and observed a male suspect being escorted out by Transit Peace Officers. The male suspect was alone and was in possession of a child’s blue Giant bike. Police conducted a stop of the male suspect and completed a Bike index query which confirmed that the suspect was not the registered owner of the bike. Police got a hold of the registered owner and found that they had been v...ictims of a break and enter the night prior and that the bike was a birthday gift for their son. Because this bike was listed on Bike Index, DDiv officers were able to return the bike back to it’s rightful owner yesterday! Happy re- birthday buddy! #dontstealfromkids #bikeindex #yeg #communitypolicing @bikeindex @edmontonpoliceservice

#Repost @edmontonpoliceservice with @make_repost What a catch! Multiple bicycles were recovered from one location thanks to EPS’ Downtown Division officers, Mud Sweat and Gears, Stolen Bikes Edmonton Facebook Group, and Bike Index’ integral roles in this story: On Sunday, officers were made aware of two stolen bicycles (valued over $2000 each) that were being sold online. Throughout the week, officers made contact with the seller over social media expressing an interest i...n buying one of the bikes. A meeting was arranged, and EPS project teams set up in the area; officers witnessed the seller leaving a different house without the bike, and he headed towards the meeting location. Officers stopped the seller, while plainclothes members checked the backyard of the house the seller came from. They saw one of the stolen bicycles that was in the ad, and several others, which were seized from the yard. The seller told officers that the second bike from Sunday’sad was already sold. Thankfully, officers were able to contact the citizen who had no idea she purchased a stolen bicycle, and she arranged to have it returned. Police have identified another owner from these seized bicycles and continue to search for the owners of the remaining seized bikes. Registering your bicycles on Bike Index makes a significant, positive impact on our investigations. We can instantly identify owners, which means we can return your property, hassle-free! Take two minutes out of your Friday and register your bicycles on Bike Index for free. #yeg #bikeindex

#Repost @edmontonpoliceservice with @make_repost The EPS takes the health and safety of the public and our officers seriously. Just as we encourage the public to practice safe social distancing, we ask our officers to do the same when on and off duty. While this is not always practical in frontline policing, we are modifying some practices during these challenging times. One example is the use of smart phone cameras to photograph documents at vehicles stops and other inte...ractions to provide adequate social distance and minimize the handling of documents. Theses images will only be used for reference during the time of the vehicle stop and will not be stored beyond the conclusion of the interaction. Officers are also encouraged to follow adequate social distancing when not involved in investigations or during well-needed breaks. These are challenging times and we are responding accordingly to serve the community in the safest possible way.
