Tricks and liberty are a great way to get your home-care exercises accomplished! Blending things that are fun and mentally stimulating can go a long way in terms of keeping your horse engaged during rehab and in preparation for the more challenging exercises down the road. You also get to strengthen your relationship with your horse along the way and who doesn't want that? This week I am sharing a snip from a typical session with one of my four horses that I am rehabbing. Sp...arky is in his mid 30s and had suffered a displaced femoral fracture before I met him. Since then we have worked very hard to keep his hind end mobile and strong. While he will always have a shorter stride on that one leg because he lost substantial bone mass as a result of poor acute management, he is now able to weight bear and move the hindlimb in all available ranges. In order to preserve range of motion and joint health he needs regular movement and stimulation to all joint, muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the area. Some of the tricks we do such as counting, give me 5, and step ups onto the box require his hind end stabilizers to work very hard as he must shift weight from front to back repeatedly and in motion. The liberty work is to stimulate circulation in a low stress setting and keep his hips moving and working in movement. This week I had the opportunity to switch roles. My amazing friend and colleague Jena Fraser worked on my horses helping to free up restrictions that I have had difficulty in addressing myself. The results and emotional shift I saw in my horses were nothing short of incredible. Jena is a phenomenal human therapist as well as 5th year Osteopathy student but this was one of her first experiences translating skills to the horses. Her success alongside my horses behavior towards ...her speaks volumes to the idea that the practice of Osteopathy embodies the universal language of all beings on this planet. If you are a therapist with your own horse, I’m sure you can attest to the emotional challenges of treating our own. We have so much invested in our cherished partners that it can become difficult to see things objectively at times. And of course we always want the best for them, which sometimes means asking for help. Be sure to check out the before and after pics. Left eye and left nostril closer to neutral, vitality restored in both eyes, wider and less visible tension, twirl moved from left set to center. And most importantly major releases and changes in emotional and behavioral state evident immediately. In the days since Waco has had less swelling and irritation in his left eye also! Open your mind and heart to the possibilities, relax into accepting support, and just see what happens

There’s nothing sweeter than watching the eyes of a horse and a child when they connect. These interactions were adorable and illuminating to watch. How gentle my horses became in the space with her clear and present mind. We could all learn something here. Children don’t tend to hold the mental and emotional baggage that us ‘adults’ find ourselves anchored by.
