An Important Message from the Ontario Animal Owners Association Board The College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), the body that regulates veterinary medicine in the province, is asking for feedback on their Draft Position Statement on the Use of Non-Conventional Therapies in the Practice of Veterinary Medicine. Soon the Council of the CVO will consider whether or not to adopt the draft. What's New? Qualified non-veterinarian ...practitioners in areas such as physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, homeopathy, etc. will be free to practice without veterinary supervision. This is a win for animals, animal owners, and practitioners alike! How can you influence the CVO Council's decision on the Draft? 1. The CVO would like feedback on their Draft Position Statement. Please complete their survey, located here: https://cvo.org//Draft-Position-Statement-Use-of-Non-Conve PLEASE NOTE that the landing page for the Position statement offers space for your comments: PLEASE USE IT. In your comments, we urge you to commend the CVO for its positive attitude to non-veterinarians providing health care options to animals. Then please take the time to complete the survey. 2. The Position Paper makes some additional points that you may want to comment on as an animal owner, concerning access to these services (whether provided by a veterinarian or non-veterinarian). Specifically, part of the draft asserts that only conventional veterinary medicine can make a diagnosis, that conventional ‘sound diagnostics’ are needed to make that diagnosis, and that conventional medicine is superior to non-conventional therapies. The CVO draft position statement is acceptable. The CVO should hear that. However, there should be a way to allow for veterinarians who use non-conventional therapies or refer to non-conventional practitioners to do so in the absence of a conventional medical diagnosis, without expensive diagnostics, and without having to state that non-conventional therapies are inferior to conventional therapies.
